Whenever I think about doing a post about SPN, I think, "Yes, but those who watch SPN already know, and those who don't just scroll on by, thinking, oh, just someone talking about SPN again." But what I feel like I just didn't see enough people saying, when I was the one just scrolling by, is this show is good.
This show is excellent. This show is on par with most of my very favorite shows. Yes, it bludgeons you over the head with its themes, but they are good themes, well played--a little simplistic, but highly relevant and insightful nevertheless. The same could be said for its meta, which is so cheap at times, and yet profound and really thinky, too.
It has its problems, but let's face it, so does every show, except perhaps The Wire. There are some things I wish it did better. But frankly, Sam Wincester's arc is one of the best I've seen on television. It is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. And the mythology--look, I thought I didn't care about mythology. BtVS has dumb mythology and I don't care, because hello, character stuff. But this show has really great character stuff (okay, for two characters) and then it has this whole amazing epicsauce mythology where everything fits and it's this big huge story, even in spite of retconning. And I find that mythology matters to me very much.
So I turn to
my_daroga and say, "I don't actually want to write the slash, or the porn. I want to write the big deep twisting vat of thinky thought that is all just a seething mass of meta, in which very little plot rests; it's more just reflection on this morass of tangled introspection." Because that's what this show deserves.
And
my_daroga said, "You should write it, because very little of it exists in the fandom."
Can this be true? Can the internet prove her wrong? Only time will tell. Or recs! I just finished S5. I don't care if there's slash or incest or not; I just want lots and lots of thinky twisted meta. Think
kita0610. But with more SPN.
