Also! Just—meta!fic! Is love!

[personal profile] likeadeuce was talking the other day about WHY WE WRITE—one of her big reasons being, "as a fun way of arguing with obscure bits of canon that don't quite make sense." I said I do the same thing, and the other fifty percent of my stories are me arguing with fanon. Like, all the genderswap stories I've ever read feature the young and the gorgeous, and much is made of what beautiful women the men make, and there's never any attention paid to conservation of mass, or even hair length, for god's sake, and why do people think Daniel's the girly one? I could have written a(nother) thousand-word essay about genderswap, and cited specific stories and caused some wank and some bobble-headed nodding, and next week it would have vanished into the swirl. Instead, I wrote seven thousand words of genderswap fic starring geezer!Jack. Which is way more fun and whimsical to read, and has a much higher chance of landing on people's rec lists and being admired forever.
