For what it's worth, I thought it was very nicely balanced. There were like two moments where I thought, oh Harry why don't you see what's going on, but then I stopped myself and said, no, wait, it's actually very well balanced, it's just that we have more information than Harry does and Harry doesn't know he's in a H/D fic ;) (For the record, Rabbit didn't give himself away as Malfoy, but Malfoy gave himself away as Rabbit a few times, IMO.)
Meanwhile, getting back to your original questions, I don't ever outline. I can't outline if I want to still care enough about the story to finish it, heh. I do a lot of story-doctor type things when I get stuck and can't figure out what's going on, where I go back and dive through what I've already written to see what clues I left myself, since my subconscious is smarter than I am, but in general I just charge boldly ahead.
Right now I'm writing Lullabye for the New World Order, a FF7 fic that's been in my head for years (seriously, it's over a decade ago that I originally started thinking about it with my now-ex gf-at-the-time), and the fact I've been writing these characters for fifteen years means that they're just so delightfully familiar. It's like visiting old friends!
