I agree that it's nice that those works expose more people to hip-hop and rap, though I find it frustrating that sometimes the response you get is, "But Hamilton is different." I think my mom's gotten much better, but whenever I used to try to tell her hip-hop is just like any other music in its nuance and complexity, she wasn't interested. I think she has seen Black Panther, but she doesn't actually notice soundtracks; I don't think it was actually the soundtrack of Spider-verse that she was commenting on, either. I think she meant that the whole thing felt like it had a rhythm.
I definitely like movie soundtracks as a way to try to get a handle on certain types of music; I'm not very good at understanding any music at all or what's popular, but because soundtracks are pinned on narratives I find them more accessible than other things.
