I really need to start getting into all the comics Yes, you should. :P I've only read the early ones, for the most part (meaning timeline-early not publishing-early, I'm trying to keep the same timeframe as my DVD watching), and those were limited by my library's selection, but most of them are really good. As to how they fit into canon... some do, some don't. The easy way to tell is by who wrote them; the ones written by someone directly involved with the show generally fit into canon, the others tend to be a little more... afloat, and honestly aren't as good. My favorites as yet are: "Origin" (adapted from the original movie script and tweaked to fit the TV show timeline), "Slayer, Interrupted" (the Mental Hospital Incident, as well as the really cute short "Dawn & Hoopy the Bear"), and the absolute must-reads of "Spike & Dru" (cowritten by JM, featuring the Fungus Demon Debacle and - if I remember correctly - the turning of Dalton) and "Tales of the Slayers" (a large collection of shorts, with gorgeous artwork, written by just about everybody, including Joss. My favorite is the one about Nikki, featuring a brief appearance by - I think - Robin's dad).
Yeah, I was a comics geek long before I was a TV geek. But they're still good, especially TotS.
