I don't think fandom is dying, but it's true that people leave it every day. And I've also noticed that very few people are writing the really long B/A shipper fics, the way I'm doing with this story. It makes me sad, but I think the key is to be positive about it, to contribute what you can, because that encourages other people! I hope you keep reading and writing--and I hope you keep feeling welcome to comment.
