-Do you ever feel like Buffy being named "Buffy" hurt BtVS's viewership? I know I scorned the show because I thought the name sounded stupid. I was too judgmental to realize the name might be a joke, but I bet lots of people were in my boat.
Yes. Althought I saw the movie partly because we had a cat named Buffy. I think it would have been better to make the series about Sunnydale and the hellmouth and all the weirdness that goes on. Then it could have had an ensemble cast and not been all about Buffy. And they could have done more with the secondary characters that came along later who were more interesting and likable than the original group who became cliquish and judgemental.
I spurned the TV show because I read that it had a good vampire named Angel with a soul that helped Buffy. I thought it sounded incredibly stupid. And still think it was a stupid thing to start, especially in the first season when they hadn't figured out everything yet. And define a soul, a thing we couldn't possibly really know. I've heard he exists because Fox wanted a love interest and that's what Joss came up with. I don't know why it couldn't have been a fellow student in the 'high school is hell' theme.
And I hate the names Spike and Angel. Buffy is ok, because it's incongruous. All the incongruity is what I like about the show. I also hate Spike's duster. It's too big and it's blocking our view. It's fine for dramatic entrances and exits and fight scenes, but once he gets where he's going and is just standing around, he should take it off.
