Very interesting post! I don't have much to add except that towards the beginning you gave me an urge to write a fic in which people say "what?" and "huh?" a lot until I got to the part where you basically said a fic like that would probably suck.
Hahhaha! Have you seen Firefly? I sincerely believe Jubal's hearing problem was constructed for that very same reason: Whedon having someone mishear for no apparent reason, just because it isn't normally "done". But then that becomes a reason in itself: it made Jubal very bizarre, which enhanced the whole plot quite a bit. But if every ep were to contain that element, it would get old really fast. So, I don't think a fic like that would suck...I just think it would suck if every fic were like that!
made me go "this is so me!" but as you said, that's probably the case for a lot of people. Personal specific examples: I remember very often in high school I was accused of looking really annoyed when I was merely amused, and when I was growing up, my dad consistently interpreted my "bored" face as "worried."
Yeah, I think it must happen to a lot of people.
Personally, though, I wouldn't like for people to automatically see when I'm sad, because I prefer to keep that stuff to myself until I'm really ready to share.
My problem is I can't share when I'm ready to share. Naturally, there are things I don't want them to read, things I want to internalize before they find out...but sometimes I'd almost prefer everyone around me to have telepathy! ;o)
