AHAHA! Many of your ATLA feelings, they are my feelings too! Eerily so! Even if by the last few Harry Potter books I was so uninvested I don't even remember the precise mechanics of Voldemort's downfall. They were ... complicated? There was arcane wand-lore involved? Whatever, JKR!
a pre-meditated decision based on what he believed in, rather than who he loves.
Absolutely. And the final straw was a war meeting, not, I don't know, a mournful peasant or something. And yes, speaking of Rowling, I was always sad she didn't do anything more interesting with Draco et al. But then, I think the internet agrees with me. So I should probably not babble!
I like that the main love interest didn't turn out to be his sister. That always happens and I'm tired of it! It's like if you fight really hard and lose a lot and choose love over detachment suddenly you have to end up all alone watching your father burn while HAN SOLO MAKES OUT WITH YOUR GIRL.
An excellent point! And I always felt bad for poor Luke (at least he got one kiss?). Even if Aang/Katara left me pretty lukewarm, it's good to think ATLA was being all subversive and so forth. Well, relatively.
I'm beginning to suspect the fic . . . is . . . not my sort of fic
Heh. Although I haven't fallen for Zuko/Katara as such, I can see the appeal! And oh boy I have certainly seen the fic, because it is like 90% of all ATLA fic ever. And yet hardly ever done in a way I've enjoyed, sob! The main exception to this distressing tendency that I've come across so far are all the bits by recessional, which I found completely delightful. Though they're admittedly Mai/Zuko/Katara (or, um, some such iteration), so the dynamic is, well, threesome-y.
What I really want is gen!
This is what I really want as well! I wish I had some useful recs - I really have to start tagging fics. But there is definitely not enough of it around.
Well, though apparently I want historical melodrama as well? My ideal ATLA is apparently some kind of Korean historical drama with a bonus flying bison. Or at least, that's what I keep writing! And then it turns into some kind of repressed Victoriana version where everyone feels as though they're wearing corsets! Problems, man.
But anyway!
Aang and Zuko are going to bring the dragons back, and Zuko saying, "We don't dance like that," very harshly at Aang and Aang making his wibble face and Zuko showing him how they do dance
This is a fic which needs to exist.
Though:
Zuko reading the part of Souzin's scroll where he WAS TOTALLY GAY FOR ROKU
B-but that was the entire thing!? Even if it did go entirely over Zuko's head, oh Zuko.
