I basically agree with [livejournal.com profile] stefanie_bean
- many only children in fiction are plot nessessities. The first three seasons of BtVS were focused on Buffy's school activities but as soon as the school was over her ties with Scoobies started to weaken and to create a truly compelling story Joss had to add a new character strongly tied to Buffy.

As to daddy issues, Joss confessed once that his relationship with his brother was very stormy (http://www.vampiresandslayers.com/buffy.htm)

I was a strange, unlovable child [laughter]. I think the thing that I was most afraid of was my big brother. If you see big brothers being eviscerated on the show you’ll know where what came from [laughter]. He’s scary! You meet him, you’ll think he’s scary.

I think it manifested onscreen very clearly.
