There is that, yes, but Angel and dark, dingy, usually rainy alleys - it's a classic thing for him (maybe he imprinted on them? His life as a vampire began in one, after all), a sort of transient state with change for the better waiting on the other side. It's pretty much compulsive, judging by his previous experiences =)
