I'm... pretty sure I actually knew about gay people in a vague sort of way before that. I wasn't like poor Catherine, to whom we had to explain gayness one day in homeroom (but how does it work?!, she would cry XD) but Mercedes Lackey was my first real exposure to actual like, examples of gay people, or something.
