After my month of reading fic, I've had a little break and so this is the first thing that I've read in a couple weeks.
And I have to say- this was just devastating. I mean...from start to finish it's hard to know who to feel more sorry for.
I loved the balance between Steven's memories of Quor'toth and his relationship with Angel back in LA. I think they work very nicely against each other.
I always feel that Connor is manipulative- and I felt that way here, too. How could he hurt Angel? I mean, it's just so horrible...and Angel's stoic resistance which finally gives way because he does love his son and probably would do anything to convince Connor.
“It’s still in you, isn’t it, to hurt little boys. Just to hear their pretty voices scream.” Connor’s fingers were pushing and prodding down the side of Angel’s face, feeling the dead parts that obeyed like lethargic putty and the other hard parts that didn’t move. Angel’s mouth was open, but Connor didn’t know enough about being close to someone to feel it strange that no breath came out. He touched inside, the slippery hard fang, and told his father, “It’s still in you to fuck up families. It’s even in you to fuck up me.”
Angel caught Connor’s hand and folded the prying fingers in on themselves. “I won’t hurt you, Connor.” His fist closed around Connor’s. “I wouldn’t."
I've read a few Connor/Angel fics...but this one was really, really hard to read. I think it was this sort of stuff: “Christ,” Angel muttered, the steady rhythm of his thrust inward stuttering, slamming into Connor harder than he had before. “You’re perfect,” he grunted. “Beautiful. Proud of you, son. And fuck, you’re so good. So warm, so tight for me, honey, you’re doing so good.”
I was just...gah! Made me feel so sad- particularly for Angel- because, you know, big Angel love...but even for Connor because although I don't find him particularly sympathetic he sure is the way you've written him here- which is a tribute to your skill.

Just really fabulous, Joy!
