It's Lion Turtles all the way down ([personal profile] lettered) wrote2009-02-05 10:41 pm

It's a BOOK and it's FREE!

I run a comm called [livejournal.com profile] marmalade_fish. It's for fans of Sarah Rees Brennan, known as [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales on Livejournal. I know of her from fanfic she used to write, back when she was mistful. You might have seen me talking about it; I confess to a bit of passion.

Now she writes professionally, e.g. An Old-Fashioned Unicorn's Guide To Courtship. This is a short story you can read online. I like fairytales; they're one of my favorite things. I also like meta, especially meta in the form of fiction, so meta on fairytales in the form of fiction is like a triple threat sundae. But despite the metatation its a light, fun read, with some very funny laugh-out-loud type parts, a heart-achey moment or two, and much of the thinking take-or-leave depending how much you want to read into it or not, for it allows much without cramming anything down anyone's throat.

Sarah's novel is coming out in June. It's called The Demon's Lexicon. It's a young adult urban fantasy novel, about two brothers, another sibling pair, and demons.

Sarah has always written cool stories, with cool characters. Her dialogue is amazing because it feels very real, but is also funny and touching. Though her descriptions are sparse they are spot on and very symbolically strong. But in the end, what draws me to her work is that it makes me think about me, and who I am, and assumptions I carry about the people around me, and myself. The best things I've read have changed me, and not because there was a really cool plot twist, or even very skilled metaphor, but because they managed to touch something deeper. I have seen enough of Sarah's writing to know she'll do that time and time again.

I'll post a review when the novel comes out, so I can share stuff I love CONVERT YOU ALL. Wait, I crossed out the wrong one . . .

The reason I started this post (which has taken me way, way longer than 15 minutes, because I keep trying to stop myself from babbling), is because my comm [livejournal.com profile] marmalade_fish, is giving away Advanced Reader Copies of Sarah's book, The Demon's Lexicon. The guidelines for entering are here. It seemed wrong to be having a free book give-away, especially of a book by an author I admire so much, without giving my flist a heads up.

So, there you go!

Perhaps you should do one post of unedited 15 minutes slightly tangetal stuff, and then a quick version for those short on time...

The conversion is also my plan! I mean, I like to share books and will do so, I mean, damn.

I am waiting for sticker inspiration to strike so I have three goes!

xx

I have The Demon's Lexicon down on my Wish List and will buy it as soon as it comes out. I didn't know about the online short story, and will hop over there to read it as soon as I have some time! Thanks for the heads up!
