So, anyone here interested in doing a quick and dirty beta of my Star Trek Into Darkness fic? I think the fic could be enjoyed whether you liked the movie or not, but as someone who was very unhappy with the movie, I feel the necessity to warn. It's about 16,000 words. I'd really like to post it sometime this week. I know that's a super quick turn-around, but I really only want SPAG and someone who can let me know whether handling of a vast array of minority groups is offensive. It's not supposed to be the best piece of literature ever; I just had some things I needed to say.

I'd be willing to SPAG, but I think you should out for a Person Of Color to racist-beta. Uh, do you follow Robanybody on LJ or DW or Tumblr? She's got the same name in all three places and she's a great writer who is very vocal about the breadth and depth of race fail in the new Trek.

Well, my concerns actually have a lot less to do with race than they do with gender. I mean, there's definitely the potential that my handling of some of the characters of color isn't appropriate, because that's always a possibility, but I've written characters of color before and feel comfortable with it. There's a gender neutral character in this fic; zie's the main character, so I want to do a good job on it. I've heard plenty of trans and gender neutral people say that there is no one "right" way to portray these characters, but I do know there are a few wrong ways. And there's also disability (or different ability) which I would like someone to check too, though I also feel more comfortable about that because I've done more reading on the subject.

I do feel uncomfortable going up to someone I don't know and saying, HEY, you're a POC! You should beta my story! Of course there are more polite ways to phrase it, and I know many people of color are happy to offer their opinions, but it does feel usurious. Anywhoodle, someone on LJ volunteered to read it; zie identifies as genderqueer and is a person of color, so zie's what I was looking for!
