Y. Effusive, embarrassing, and possibly kinda scary amounts of gratitude to
romanyg for paid time. You're awesome with the love and make lj a cooler place to be, and not just for the random fairy gifts on the doorstep!
A. And: I'm back! For good this time I think. I helped my brother move to Gainsville, Florida--I'd never been to FL. Or Mississppi or Alabama. It's humid in Houston, but Florida is SWIMMING in it. Seriously, if you can't hold your breath for long times underwater, don't go to Florida. I nearly Wicked Witched of the West'ed.
Y. Ask a question, any question about me, about fandom, about fic, about lj, about you, about oompas or hatracks or zits or finely carved small foxes, and I'll answer to the best of my ability. Unless I don't feel like it; then you're screwed. But no, really, I want to play! *blows breath on window and draws heart with fingers*
! ZOMG thank you again
romanyg!

I don't read much outside the SF&F genre, so it took several recommendations for me to pick it up. I'm so glad I did.
The writing is amazing -- some of his sentences I had to read over again to savor. I love comics so I really enjoyed the history, the mingling of the real and unreal. And the characters were so very real to me I hated to close the book at the end.
I didn't know who Raymond Scott was! I googled him just now. Whereabouts was he mentioned in the book?

My dad is a huge fan of his music so I and my three siblings are very familar with his work. It is the only time I've ever seen him mentioned.
I'm also a big comics book fan, plus magic so I though the book was fascinating, especially how it twisted and borrowed from the actual history of that period. Reminded me of Ragtime in that respect, which is also brilliant.
I've read George R.R. Martin's other works - He wrote a great vampire novel ages and ages ago.

I also remember a short novel called Sandkings. Kind of horror-ish.
The stuff in Kavalier & Clay about magic and Houdini was so, so interesting. I'm assuming that those facts about Houdini's life were true, since in the afterword he listed all those books he read in his research.
