Questions Post #12, Vid Recs?
1. There's a gray bar at the top of my journal and everywhere I go in lj land that has a tiny pic of my icon, and stuff like "post to journal" "view friends page". Was that always there?
2. When you're about to post to your journal, so you use that gray bar, do you just call up semagic, do you go to your user info page and go to "Journal" and then "update"?
3. If you have your journal bookmarked, what is bookmarked--the "recent entries" page?
4. Do you sometimes suspect that everyone has easier ways of navigating their journals than you?
5. Do you reply to thing on your flist the first time you see the posts? Or do you mark them or remember them and go back to them? Or do you just not reply to a couple of people for a while, then all the sudden click on their names and reply to like 5 posts of theirs at once?
6. Do you still have comments from over a month ago to which you mean to reply?
7. Do you feel bad when you don't answer someone's comment to a post you've done?
8. Do you get bunnies for icons every once in a while the way you do for fic?
9. Do you ever feel like everyone is going faster than you somehow?
10. Do you have ideas for posts and half-written posts sitting around--kinda like fic?
11. Does anyone else feel weird IM'ing someone you know on lj but never talked to on IM before?
12. Does anyone else have trouble logging OFF IM once they've logged on because there are too many people they haven't talked to?
13. Is anyone else so one track minded that they can't do anything else or talk to anyone else once they're talking to one person on IM? I can't multi-task. At ALL. And when I try I just get all slow and agitated.
14. Does anyone else get itchy about their bio info? Like you'd really like to put something interesting there but can't think of anything?
Quintessential Vid Recs
So, I had these dl'ing problems and these soundcard problems and all kinds of other computer problems, but now those problems are gone. Except for the fact that I'm technologically illiterate and will never know what I am doing when it comes to these things. The point of the sad story is that I've never really watched fanvids before, and now I can. So, I'm wondering: What are your quintessential vid recs? What's the one that you think everyone should see, either because everyone talks about it the most, or because you love it the best? What's the defining fanvid of your 'ship, your character, your moment of truth? What's your canon fanon, vid-style? If you can, link please, because I suck at the whole . . . finding things.

2. I type livejournal.com/update.bml.
3. Userinfo.
4. Not really.
5. All three, sometimes. When I skim, I remember - you need to reply to that post. If I have a lot of time, I post one at a time, starting from the bottom going up. Then if I feel I've neglected someone as far as comments go, I go to their journal and make up for it.
6. No LOL
7. Yes. :(
8. Nah.
9. Nah.
10. Mostly my prose kinda entries. Then when I do post them, I delete them.
11. I do! So usually people have to IM me, and most of the time I have everyone blocked on my buddylist 'cause I'm not all that social.
12. No.
13. Sometimes. When I can manage to multi-task, I multi-task well and it gives me the largest sense of happy and accomplished. But when it comes to like my closest online friend - I usually block everyone cept her, so I can just concentrate on our conversation.
14. Yeah, but seeing as how I don't add people anymore, I've just decided not to worry about it.

1. I have that thing too and I have no idea how to make it go away. If you figure it out, please share.
2. Yup, user info -> update
3. Yup.
5. Hm. Sometimes I reply right away (like now), sometimes I bookmark the post to reply later in the day. Sometimes I even reply a week later, but LJ moves so fast that I always wonder if the person even sees the comment.
6. Not right now.
7. Yes. It happened only once though - when I got several dozens of comments to one post, and on the same had pulled a back muscle which made sitting still hurt like a bitch. I'm actually still feeling slightly guilty over it. ;)
8. I only make icons when I got a bunny (that's a weird sentence).
9. Nope.
10. Usually one or two at any given time.
11. I don't usually do IM so the whole thing feels very weird to me.
13. Yes, that's why I don't like IM, I think.
14. Not really.
no subject
2.Eh I use it about half and half, when I remember it's there I use it but sometimes it's effin annoying. It needs a little button that lets you get directly to user info
3. Yeah recent entries is bookmarked
4. definitely sometimes
5. eh I try to reply within a decent amount of time but lots of times I end up replying to everyone all at once. I keep the lj notification email in my inbox until I reply if I have intentions of replying to remind me that so and so said something to me. As far as my flist goes, I comment when I see it if at all possible because my memory isn't that good to remember so and so had something I really wanted to comment on.
6. Yes *hides* and sadly it's feedback for a fic I posted. I suck at repping to feedback.
7. Yup
8. Yeah or skimming my flist I see something and think ooo I could do this or that for this char or that.
9. God yes
10. In my brain, which is why most of them don't get written. They live my brain or my brain gets occupied with other things. I should write this stuff down.
11. Yes! I'm always afraid they won't think I'm cool.
12. errr not really. Most of my IM list I don't talk to really regularly. They're there so I can ask rpg questions or something of the sort. We're aquaintances more than friends. Now my friends on IM (Lj friends or otherwise) I do feel like I need to at least say HEY before logging off IM.
13. Oh I multi task really well. I'm a mom so I sorta have to or nothing would ever get done. Plus I think I have ADD. I totally can't pay attention to just one thing. Even when I watch movies in a theater my brain is going haywire.
14. YES! And you know those help me fill out my user info meme's, I never do them 'cause I'm afraid no one will have anything interesting to say about me and then I'll just feel not cool.
Vids: I don't have many that I watch or just adore but this one makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it. Warning, it is B/A friendly and anti C/A but amusing.

I see
Stuff she missed:
Vrya/a> - "Schism" - Absolutely jaw-dropping Spike portrait.
Laura Shapiro - "Ing" - Anya.
Heresluck - "Superstar" - The definitive Faith vid.
Ascian - "I Touch Myself" - An incredibly creative and funny, ah, commentary on Buffy/Spike.
Big Truck Productions - "Failed Experiments in Video Editing" - A Cowboy Bebop vid, sort of. Download it.

2. All of the above, depending. I don't have Semagic at work.
3. Recent Entries, and several of my most-used friends filters.
4. Not really...
5. Usually I reply at once, but sometimes I wait till I get home.
6. Not many.
7. Yes.
8. Yes.
9. Nope.
10. Not really. I get a post idea, I generally use it right away.
11. I avoid IM like the plague.
12. See above.
13. That's why I avoid IM like the plague.
14. Occasionally.

2. Generally I go to the gray bar or I use semagic if I know I'm going to get windy.
3. I have my recent entries and my friends page bookmarked. Generally I go to my friends page first.
4. Yes.
5. If I'm just doing a quick read-through, I don't tend to comment (this entry being the exception). If I have time I comment the first time around. If I don't I may never comment.
6. I'm sure I do.
7. Yes. I try to reply to all four of my comments, so I won't feel bad. :)
8. Yes. So I tend to slap something together.
9. Ummm... could you explain that in single syllable words. :)
10. Yes.
11. I don't IM much anymore.
12. See #11
13. See #11
14. Yes.

2. Through info page, because I got rid of the grey bar back when I could remember how, and I don't use semagic.
3. I just have the main LJ login page bookmarked, it's always the first thing I have to do when I get here, and then I just click.
4. Yes. Like all those people who say Semagic is awesome, while when I tried it, it boggled me.
5. I open everything I know I'll be interested in in tabs, and then reply to them based on an arbitrary system of what I'm in the mood to reply to and some basis in chronology. Although sometimes I just leave a tab open because for some reason I just don't get in the mood to reply, and then I eventually realize that it's been too long and most of the discussion has been discussed.
6. No... I usually reply relatively soon, and if I don't, it's because I have completely forgotten and therefore have no intention of replying.
7. Yes, but I usually reply.
8. Every once in a very, very long while, and I'll usually hunt around to see if anyone else has already made one similar.
9. Yes. LJ moves so fast! It can be overwhelming. Especially now that I have a full time job, instead of 2-3 hours of classes a day...
10. Yeah... and they'll never get posted, because their moment has passed. But I still have them.
11. Yeah. And I don't do it very often, so it's even weirder.
12. For RL friends, yes. I don't have too many LJers on my IM list.
13. Yes! But sometimes when the conversation slows down a bit, I can kind of manage, like, looking at pictures and stuff... Reading multiple things is hard.
14. Uh huh. I wish I was more creative and interesting. Oh well.

2. I use Semagic.
3. I have 2 bookmarks, one for my own journal (recent entries) and one for my friends page.
4. I suspect that other people might use their flists differently. I'm very methodical (some might even say anal) and like to work in chronological order, so I go back and work forward. I think a lot of other people don't do it this way.
5. First time I see them except for unusual cases.
6. No... my flist isn't that big that I have hundreds of comments.
7. Oh yes.
8. I don't know how to make anything but the simplest of icons, but sometimes I think of what would make an interesting icon and then have no earthly way to make it!
9. Always. Everyone on my flist seems to have way more time to spend on LJ than I do.
10. In my head, yeah. See #9.
11. I don't do IM. Just never got into it.
12. See #11.
13. See #11, again!

Two Words: This is epic. The entirety of the whole Angel series, all of the key relationships and plotlines in one vid. Probably *the* definitive AtS-general vid. Kanye's a little too smooth, too ghetto fabulous for me, but if I forget that he's singing the song, I can really appreciate how well the lyrics work with the images. Or, how Sisabet makes the images work, in any case. I love the part where the song goes, "Two chains, one neck," and we see Cordy and Wes as the two chains and Angel as the one neck. Also, the part where the song goes, "Fuck you, pay me," and it's Angel lifting baby Connor up from the alleyway behind Caritas. Also, the editing with Angel and Connor both walking away. Also, this vid makes me cry every time.
Cowboy: Um, I guess I'm doing quintessential after all, because this is probably *the* definitive Angel (the character) vid. By Sisabet and her sister Dawn (if memory serves). It's scary how well this song works. Angel *is* a cowboy. Or wants to be one, in any case. Really, just perfection.
Counting Bodies: A really fabulous look at the Darla-Angel-Connor arc and the literal body count that storyline wracked up. Awesome technique in this one, oversaturations and black and white footage and pinpoints of color to highlight the action. It reallly makes the story come alive as well, to see all the scenes cataloged in snapshots like this, the sorrow and the frustrations and the hope and the inevitability of it all.
Passive: I love this vid to pieces. It's more style and technique than story, but there's still a lot of substance to this one. The thing about vids is that they can make images really pop and if you can get a string of images that are similar you can make a really powerful point with them. The point of this vid is (I think) to show how brutal Angel's and Connor's relationship was, even before Angel slit his son's throat like a pig. I'm not sure that the vidder meant to infuse the vid with such a strong incestous vibe, but since the show itself sexualizes violence in really obvious ways, you can't help but see the blows as subtextual. Or, I can't, anyways.
Revolution: This Faith/Buffy vid literally kicks ass. I can't believe some of the editing this one, this vidder's eyes is so refined. It looks almost as if ME intentionally blocked and shot certain scenes in certain ways *just* so this vid could be made. I love watching this one over and over again.
Endless Love: I'm not even a Spike/Angel shipper and this vid makes me go, "AWWWWWWWWWW FOREVER LOVE!" I'll also never forget someone asking which one Diana Ross was, and AnnieSJ exclaiming, "Spike, OF COURSE." Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. It's funny 'cause it's true.

I just cried for like, thirty minutes straight.
Do you have links to the Revolution one and the Endless love one? Because I couldn't find those. Probably just going to make me cry more. Jesus.

*wipes*
Endless Love (http://f1renze.livejournal.com/168406.html), which *I* cried at. I don't know. They're so forever.
I have no idea where I got Revolution, but I have it on my computer at home so I'll try and upload it for you this weekend.

Thank you so much for those recs.
Endless Love
Strange how cheesy that one way that it could make me feel kinda depressed as well. A/S always does that to me though.
I have no idea where I got Revolution, but I have it on my computer at home so I'll try and upload it for you this weekend.
Aw, thanks! I found links to it in several places, but they were all broken. Maybe her site is down or something, so if it's too much trouble or you can't get it or something, I'll just bookmark a site and check it periodically in case she gets it fixed.
Because, you have really good taste. Thanks again.

2. Ha, I actually made an "update" link on my bookmarks toolbar because I was tired of navigating my way to the update page.
3. I don't have my journal bookmarked, other than said update page and my friends page.
4. Yeah, sometimes.
5. Depends on how time-constrained I'm feeling. If I make a note to go back and reply to something, I usually forget until much later, and then I feel bad about it.
6. Yes! Ack.
7. Uh-huh.
8. Sometimes, but usually I ignore them – I'm not great at making icons, but I get all OCDish around image editing software and spend hours on an image, but then it's not quite right and, y'know, sad.
9. Sometimes.
10. I have all sorts of text files sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to edit and post them. I almost never go back to them, though, because it somehow doesn't feel right to post something that I wrote months ago.
11-13: I very rarely IMify.
14. A little, but I kind of sidled out of that one by being all linky.

(Anonymous) 2006-09-01 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)Mostly I just lurk... ;) But I've pushed all the "buttons"
I could find just to see what happens...
1) Try http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?authas=tkp
under Navigation Strip.
2) I added the couple of interesting links from the grey bar
(i.e update.bml and portal) to the "links" section of my page.
3) Yes. Makes the above more useful.
Cheers.

2. livejournal.com/update. (It's usually cached in my browser bar.)
3. It's set as my homepage(s) to the "friends page"
4. No. I've seen the pink sparkles that you can't read.
5. Generally, I reply almost immediately after I read it. Rarely, will I go back to comment later. I read fic slower so it might be a while before I comment on flist posted fic, not communities.
6. No.
7. Yes. Grew up 1/2 Roman Catholic.
8. Not really.
9. Sometimes. Except on the freeway.
10. Yes. Though only meta ones.
11. I'm scared of im in general.
12. See above.
13. I just don't know what to say.

Nightmare Drusilla (can't remember the addy for this. Should be Google-able)
There isn't a vid on this site that isn't worth watching once, I think (and there are a lot). The essential vid would have to be Hope, to the Our Lady Peace song of the same name (basically Buffy as seen by Spike, this was what as running through my head when I started writing my post-NFA story). There's also Trio, to the Nobodies by Marilyn Manson (about the nerd trio, of course).
Catatonic Schitzophrenia (http://www.btvsvids.com/index.html)
Possibly the first site I ever DL'd vids from. Not many, but what's there is generally good. Her vid of Take This Waltz by Leonard Cohen is my definitive Spike/Dru glory days vid. And much as I tend to avoid Natalie Merchant on principle, Effigy is an excellent, short, Illyria vid.
Wolfpup Serenade (www.wolfpupserenade.com)
Red Oyster Cult, Guster song, Willow vid. Do you watch Farscape? If so, Moving Right Along (Muppets, John/D'argo friendship) and Rain Dogs (Tom Waits, general first season coolness) are great. Actually, Rain Dogs is probably great even with out knowing the series.
http://www.buffyvids.com/ is the Buffyverse Music Video Database, where you can chew up large chunks of both time and hard drive very, very easily. A largish portion of all (Buffyverse) vids made end up there. This is where you can probably find most of the following (because I can't remember where I got them):
Karaoke Soul by Tom McRae, Damage episodic, Dana-centric. Amazing.
Counting Bodies by Perfect Circle, Connor-focused, emphasis on Darla and Angel. Very well known vid, I'm certain others have/will rec it.
...
Grr. There are a bunch more I could rec, but when I try to think of them they run away from my brain. I give up, at least until morning. If you want, I could come up with more then. (Just watch, I'll wake up at 2am to get a glass of water and yell "D'oh!" because I made a glaring omission)

2. I used to use semagic when I did the Herald (saved SO much time) but now I just go to info page and click update.
3. I have my info page, my main page, my friends page and my filtered friends paged all bookmarked. Because
4. Yes. Like, I'm always shocked at how many great new writers/stories Kita finds. I know she's got a large FoF list (again, used to use it for the Herald) but damn! I wish you could hide the journal entries you've already read and commented to when you get interrupted in the middle of flist searching.
5. I used to read my flist in order and comment as movied. If I'd been gone for a few days I'd click on the LJ name of people I knew I would have missed something from. Now I'm so behind I'm just going back and clicking on whatever I have time for today and whatever grabs my interest. Lucky you. *g*
6. If I don't get back to them IMMEDIATELY they will sit in my Gmail in box and mock me until they've gotten "old" and I delete them thinking, 'Oh, they don't remember now, anyway.' I still feel horrible, though.
7. Yes. I know that has mileage of varying sorts for all sorts of people, but I've only recently (in the past few months) not answered EVERY single comment to anything I post. I even answer comments from non-flisters that I find annoying or pointless, even though it's pointless to do so and it annoys me. And I'm polite when I do it, dammit.
8. Yes. Which sucks because I have no graphic design gene in my body. When
9. Since birth.
10. No. I never write a post until I'm composing it in the post window. I have ideas from over a year ago still floating around my head, though. I'm often auditing the vault at the credit union and saying, "Five thousand, ten thousand, you know, when Angel's funny it has more weight, because it's ANGEL and when Xander's angry or sad it has more weight, because it's XANDER and there's some meta in that somewhere, twenty thousand, thirty thousand..."
11. Yes. I don't think I've ever cold IM'd someone before. I don't IM much, though. Except on gmail (or I did once) and I figure they all know me.
12. Nope. I'm big on the "Gotta go!"
13. Argh! Yes. I've commented to Stoney when I meant to comment to Entre. Luckily, Entre gets it when I suddenly ask her about winter pansy varities and points me to toward Stoney. Stoney, in turn, gamely tackles vegetarian recipe requests meant for Entre.
14. Is mine still the one Stoney wrote for me? I can't remember. I think everyone interested in knowing me knows about the Dolly Parton/Xander/cheesecake/weiner dog freak-show that is my journal, so I try to get by on that...I think?
Vid Recs Email me if you can't get to one of them. I may have already sent you this...they're not all S/X, by the way. They're mostly Angel. :)
And a note to my above "I suck at LJ navigation" I have the above icon identified in my list as BtVS when it's obviously AtS. Sigh. I should pick one and stick to it...

2. I don't have Semgaic, should I? I usually type in the url or use the grey bar.
3. Depends on the computer; at home, my Firefox tab is set to the user profile, in case I'm really after Interests or Friends or something.
4. No. I rock.
5. Usually, if I'm going to answer, I do it right away.
6. I think so...
7. Yup. I also feel bad, though, when I don't have anything to say except, "yeah, that's what I meant!"
8. Yes. And vids, though I don't know how to do them.
9. LJ-wise? Maybe.
10. Yup.
11. Depends on who. You? No hesitation. Someone who doesn't respond as much to my comments? Yeah. Though generally I dislike IM for the reasons you have trouble with it.
12. Not especially, because I've never made a habit of being on.
13. Yes!
14. Absotutely.

2) I just go to the "Journal" bar and click on "post an entry."
4) Yes.
5) I try and reply as soon as possible after I see what someone posted on my flist. If I don't do that, I'll forget what I wanted to say.
6) Um, no. I try and reply to my comments ASAP as well.
7) I feel like I should respond to someone's comment. Sometimes it's hard if the comment is really short.
8) Oh my goodness, I love looking at icons! I wish I could make them myself, but instead I just look with awe at most of them.
9) Yes.
12) Yes. That's why I never go on IM any more.
13) Yes, that's me exactly. I can't multi-task either.
