Fanweek Recap #1

THIS WEEK IN TKP's WORLD OF FANDOM:

[livejournal.com profile] marenfic had a cool discusion, about how sometimes writing in closed canon feels like it's all been done. For instance, B/A fics start to feel the same, after a while. There was discussion about multifannishness, freshness and enthusiasm in fandom, and the infinite potentiality of plot/concept/execution of fic. Great topic and discussion.

And [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 went, What, you want new B/A? Get your fresh hot of the press, it's everything we know and love but have never thought of in this way before fic here. If Ever 's epic and intimate; frail and robust; it's darkness on hard shiny gold; if you haven't read it, go read it. And with someone who's always slashing Angel writing B/A, we kicked off The Week Of Fans Outside The Box.

[livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue promptly squeed, "B/A! B/A! My het OTP, B/A!", when we all know her heart belongs to slash. Which is apparently why her and [livejournal.com profile] elcazavampiros promptly sat down an made a B/S vid (Something There). Apparently she got the Outside The Box memo. The vid is hilarious and quite sweet, and there's a hil-frickin'-larious Angel pun near the beginning. It's their first vid (read: so fb), which made it, you guessed it, outside the box.

At this point, the [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves we all know and love would have said, yeah, but let's get back on the subject of B/A. But apparently pod![livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves took over and saw slashers doing all this het, and our beloved, consummate, so reliably B/Aer said, Screw that. I'm doing slash. Sign On The Dotted Line is a quickie I highly recommend for the sound of Angel's zipper. The voices are spot on. And? Outside Chrislee's Box (dude. That sounds diiiirty).

Which made [livejournal.com profile] lostakasha voice the declaration that was my number one fandom lesson this week: Chrislee can do anything. We thought we knew, but we didn't until now. We really didn't. In fact, in a recent poll, 6 out of 13 people voted they wanted to be sad imitations of Chrisleeoctaves. Even Chrisleeoctaves.

But if [livejournal.com profile] lostakasha wants to be a sad, sad imitation of Chrislee, she needs to not do such a good job of going outside the box with her Xander/Wesley fic. That's a pairing I'm pretty much certain I've never seen before, and she pulled it off with panache, man. Percipitation is another instance of a talented author finding a way to say the stuff we all know and have been over before in ways that open new vistas we never even thought could happen for characters and details we know so well. I just want to frame some of her sentences. I highly rec reading and feeding.

And then [livejournal.com profile] marenfic was like yeah, but multifannishness, people. Remember, it was The Week Outside The Box. So [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves who often looks sadly at her flist and wonders why anyone would post anything that wasn't Buffyverse, said, "yeah, well, Booth/Hodgins! *flings at flist*". Which proves you apparently can teach a--a very young looking and beautiful dog new tricks. And lostakasha and tkp said again, Chrislee can do anything, with many foreheads to the floor.

But then we get to [livejournal.com profile] femmenerd, who in the interests of multifannishness went to Winchester Con and had the craziest stories about her and [livejournal.com profile] brandil pantyfanning on Jensen Ackles freakin' phone, and apparently hung out mostly with Buffyverse fans. I don't think Femmenerd even has a box, or a playpen, or even a pasture. And then there's [livejournal.com profile] romanyg, who has her roots in Buffverse, went to Winchester Con, but keeps posting Clex. The world, it is confusing.

And then all my flist sat down and watched BSG. And then I wrote something that smells like BSG fic (yes, I did just self pimp) and dude, that was totally out of my box. I confuse myself. *hangs head*

Things I zoomed by that look interesting, and I'm saving up to read:
Why [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga loves Phantom of Paradise
[livejournal.com profile] lostakasha Zack fic and catch up on her B/H WIP. BECAUSE SHE USED NEIL YOUNG, OMG
[livejournal.com profile] sweptawaybayou's DB/CK RPS
lots and lots of recs to look into by [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes
Buffy/Gunn by [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes

Things I learned this week in fandom:
1. Chrislee can do anything.
2. Posts about badfic always bring the kids to the yard.

and for the win:
3. Velvet over steel may be overused, but it sure beats "she sucked his saggy ball bag."

I might've had just a *little* too much time on my hands this week.

Because you're a horrible harpy who hates the world???

Slow on the uptake, eh?

You mean you want it should've been Spike sucking Angel's drooping nut sack? Don't make me break out lostakasha's 'brillo pubes' and 'his cleaved, wormlike shaft'.

I need bleach for my eyeballs after that.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
But..but..she made those up, right? RIGHT?? NO one actually wrote those? RIGHT?? OMG. *screams*

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. But I would sign away my firstborn to never, EVER know.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well. There was a fic I actually read once that had someone inserting their tongue into their girlfriend's clitoris. Into.

And let's not start with the self lubing manholes. One of which is bad enough, but put them together and all I can picture is some poor construction worker in NYC wondering why whenever he has to do repairs on the subway covers, his hands get sticky.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It just makes me sad when girls don't know their girl parts. BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH YOUR VULVA, OMG.

Um. Self . . . lubricating? Apparently construction!Xander went down in there and installed lube tubes in the sewer system of Spike's body. And then Spike's subway came and he had to high tail it outta there.

I need to go scrub off the top layer of my BRAIN.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do vampires even HAVE subways? I mean, yea. Let's nevermind.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
wow. let's completely nevermind it so hard we rock back and forth a little. JESUS.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHA. OMG *loves*

Here. Have some wine. Aids in the forgettin', man.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to, actually. GOD.

I have good Shiraz.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
We did the Taste of Petaluma festival this morning. Apparently, Petaluma tastes mostly like wine and chocolate.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, fun! What more do you need, really? But I thought towns in California would taste more like cilantro, suntan lotion and crunchy people and motor parts.

Great. Now I need chocolate.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-22 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Where I live it's crunchy people and wine, definitely. Lots and lots of both.

I think I might've just had too much. But there was AtS and really good pinot gris.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm rewatching S4. I *just* got done watching Apocalypse Nowish. It hurts. I remembered, but I really *forgot* how sad and awful it is, and Connor had a single perfect tear.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
And when you watch the DVD extras, Deknight goes on and on about the perfect tear. He so wants VK.

God S4 is horribly painfully perfect. Makesmewannadie, man.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh does he. I've never watched the commentaries. But anyway who wouldn't. His acting in that scene is fucking incredible.

And yeah. S4 puts my insides on and wears it as its frock.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, yea. He goes on about VK in pretty much every scene he commentates. It's insane. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that. :D
