NYC interlude in La Vie De TKP

Hi. I've been back for a week, but only lurkily. I don't know what's wrong with me; I can't seem to finish anything, even . . .

(sentences).

Some other time, I'm going to go to the East coast and just surf from person to person. I will see a2zmom's awesome gardens and definitely, definitely see [livejournal.com profile] imnotacommittee again. And Alley, hey, I would've loved to meet up with you, too, but there just wasn't time! Hopefully some day I'll be in that area long enough to catch a performance of yours!

So, but this time, I got to meet a2zmom! First she took me out for Dim Sum. I hate shrimp, but she told me to suck it up. So I did, and it was shockingly good. It didn't have the seafoody, fishy taste I always associate with shrimp. There was all kinds of other stuff I've never had before, and R pointed out how Angel would know what it was all called in Chinese, and order it for Buffy, and Buffy would want to know what it was, but Angel would be being a dick at the moment and not tell her, and Buffy would be vastly annoyed but also think it tasted really good and so be torn. One thing that's so awesome about R is she knows those characters and knows what they would do in any given situation. Another thing is how she made me eat seafood.

Another is this gal is a fantastic traveler/guide person. She be-bopped the bop all over the city! I have no idea what be-bop the bop means. And every place we went to she said, "I worked around here for a while." Anyway, it isn't just that R knows where she's going and knows how to handle a subway. It's...possibly that I was travelling with my mommy and two of her students who tended to be very indecisive and not big on Quick Trips of Discovery. But R and next headed for Central Park and made a Quick Trip Of Discovery in Saks Fifth Avenues toilets. HEE. They have saran wrap over the seats that you push a button to rotate to a fresh covering. So you can sit on clean plastic and pee; this freaked me out.

Then we made quick pit stops at Rockafeller Center and St Pat's Cathedral. But did not pee there. I had seen Rockerfellow or however you spell that (no there were no rocker fellows there. And R told me about how she was going to get to see Richard Thompson...I think a few days ago! And I was jealous), but not St. Pat's. It was very pretty, like some of the better cathedrals I saw in Europe. But the best part was possibly R saying, "These Catholics sure know lots about gorgeous architecture. But it still doesn't make me hold much truck with that Jesus Christ character. Speaking of sin, did you read that new A/S by Lynne and Kita?" And I said, "Ohyeahchristitwashot" or something, and there was much fangirling.

Lessee. I think R mentioned in her post about Central Park and trying to find the castle, and the frozen hot chocolate afterwards. I have to say though that the best part was not the dessert, which seems kind of sacriligious, speaking of sin, but actually when R started talking about all the fic stacked up in her brain. I wish I could live there for a little while. She mentioned this one thing I am dying to read and oh yeah, another I am dying to read and oh yeah, one more. For two of them at least, I'm going to need my bunk. Another thing I love about this woman, she has a dirty mind. I tried to explain this fic I started quite a while ago but it is COMPLEX and weird and I didn't know how to explain it right. But she made all the right noises of encouragement.

Then she wore my jacket which was very cute because I am very tall and she is so wee. Later we stood in front of a mirror and compared ourselves, and R said she was not as fit as Buffy and I consoled myself that my shoulders are not as big as Angel's. So there, [livejournal.com profile] diachrony. And there was talk of Broadway and DB and much fun was had by all.

The bestest thing about a2zmom is I don't think she has much use for pretense at all. She's exactly the person I've come to love having around on lj, only better. She says what she thinks and doesn't let anyone push her around, knows when to take things seriously and when to brush them off, is straightforward and funny and open. She's got great kids, too. All this I knew before, but saw reaffirmed in just one day. She's just a cool person, y'all, and I'm glad we got to meet.

Other things I saw in NY:

Ground Zero: I cried. Even though they're building there again.
MOMA: Saw Starry Night, which was a little goal of mine. Also saw some Campbell soup cans and a few Picassos and Monets I always wanted to see. Did not see Matisse's Dance. I went to look for it specifically to think about a2zmom's fic, Dance, but it was out. As was Persistence of Memory, otherwise known as Melting Clocks, by Dali. Really wanted to see that one, too.
Chelsea Market: Apparently this is where the Food Network gets shows filmed, or something? I didn't think it was that special, but there were cupcakes involved so I was good.
a writing workshop: It wasn't that great, imo, not very workshoppy, but I got the email of the person hosting it; he's an NYU creative writing teacher, so, go me.
shows on Broadway: first night we saw Spamalot, because it was late and we didn't know what to do. But thereafter it was a Battle To The Death of Fandoms After My Heart, because there was Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast, which kind of, duh, head up great fandom loves of my life, and Inherit the Wind which had Christopher Plummer in it, so it starred a fandom love of my life. Oh, choices. I ended up not seeing CP because B&B will only be on Broadway another month, and the timing did not work out the other night, so I saw POTO.
B&B: I was vastly disappointed in the B&B. I felt like they dumbed it down from the movie. In the movie the Beast is pretty fucking scary sometimes, but in the play he was just ridiculous. I can't figure out whether this was the actor or the part. I remember him being more serious and broody, but that is because I saw him played by none other than the incomparable Terrence Mann.
POTO: Still owns my soul. I don't care if ALW is a hack. John Owen Jones was a better Phantom, though. Possibly because I saw him first.
Statue of Liberty: is the size of a thimble. Because I didn't actually go over there. I felt no need to, though, as I did that last time.
Carnegie Deli: I had a Woody Allen which is pastrami and corn beef on rye, and mmm mmm good. As good as I remember and yep, just a little better than the deli in Houston desperately trying to copy it.
Blinzes: HA! R mentioned them and I thought she said, "blitzes", which is a rip off of blizzards at my local custard place, so I was all huh? And then I heard that's not what she was saying. HEE. Anyway I had them at Junior's where they were in no way as authentic as R's grandmother's. Ha. Oh, and tasted motzoh balls and tongue at Carnegie Deli. The former were bland to me and the latter was GROSS, but I think it was probably the sauce that was gross and not the meat. I like meat; I don't care.
Lombardy's: It's supposed to be the first pizza parlor in America. It was pretty good. But not as good as mommy's.

I know I'm forgetting something, but we didn't have much time, anyway. There was a lot of stuff TKMommy had to do with her students, who had won a National Scholastic Award, which is an art award for highschool kids given out by the Scholastic publishing company. These ladies are awesome, and I had a great time with them, and hope to hang out with them in the future.

It's funny, because one of them said they had a friend they wanted to meet in NYC who she'd met on the internet. So, I asked her how she met this internet friend, and she said LJ. And then there were long bouts of awkwardness as we talked about LJ but did not talk about what we do on LJ. I did not want them looking at my journal as one of them is under 18. As for other reasons--well, I talk about stuff here I don't talk about IRL, but it's not stuff that I want to keep "private" either. It's just...you talk about Buffy to people who like Buffy; you talk about gay dead incest fantasies to people who have gay dead incest fantasies. I mean, we go online, write Doogie Houser fanfic, it's all normal, right? I secretly suspect that these girls are into anime fandom online and that is why they didn't want me to see theirs, either. But then if they don't have anything to do with fandom I'd feel like an idiot saying that. ANYWHO, M &/or A, if you found my journal: HI! And we will do movies at my house some time this summer.

Lastly, the ladies got to go to an awards ceremony in Carnegie Hall which I was too busy seeing POTO to attend, but it sounded awesome. Except for the part where the CEO or whatever of Scholastic stood up and talked to them all, and mentioned that Scholastic is known (just a little) for publishing HP books, and the 7th one is coming out soon, and he hopes they'll like it. I would have lunged at the stage and then at his neck and held him hostage under threat of beating by wet carpet until he choked out what's going to happen in Book 7. Imagine being in the presence of someone who probably knows. I would die. And then resurrect to ask whether Snape is evil. 'Cause he better not be.

Link me up: Hey, if you've done anything or seen anything over these past couple weeks, give me a holler or some links. Whether it's fandom related or something about your life you think I might want to know or anything random that pops into your head. And I've been meaning to say for a while: if you're new to the old flist, hallo, make yourselves at home. I don't always friend everyone back because I just can't manage to read a big flist, but I listen to what you have to say and like to surf around. So feel free to holler and leave links too, 'cause I want to see new stuff! I want to see crazy stuff! Like lostakasha writing A/S; it happened; I am eager to read it.

Also: talk to me.

Too bad I couldn't've come a few days earlier and seen DB with you. I'd've love to've met you.

R is definitely awesome, and she mentioned several times how you yourself are awesome in person, too.

And thanks!
