New comm
Not something I should be doing while I'm supposed to be writing. Especially since I called in sick today. But! Maybe if I build it, they will come, which means I won't have to sustain it. It's a cool idea; I just have trouble with follow through.
Over on livejournal, I started a comm called
daily_words. It was supposed to have a new word every day. Trouble number one: I suck and didn't keep it up. Trouble two: I have trouble remembering the new words, even when I'm making posts about them. Except for stillicide. How could I forget stillicide? That's a good 'un.
So, my idea was to make a mirror comm,
daily_words, but with a twist. It's actually a drabble community! A word gets posted once a day, and then if the word strikes you, or you really want to remember it, or the mood just is all upon you, you write a drabble using that word somewhere! And the drabble can be original or in any fandom. And possibly the drabble doesn't even have to be a drabble; possibly it just has to be short prose of at least 50 words, or a short poem.
Once DW gets that thing where you can put in posts and tell it when to post them, it might actually be plausible to keep the thing going. Another alternative is to ask people to volunteer to post words for a week/month/or day. Hm.

You could tag the posts, with the intial. So your post on ACEROSE would get the tag "intial: a". And all upcoming words starting with A would also go under that tag. Later, you can go to the tag and see if you used that word before. Does this make sense?

See, that's what's so cool about it! You don't have to write something every day, just the words you REALLY want to remember, or that really strike you. When I was doing daily words before, I knew I was not going to remember every single word. I thought that that was alright; I would remember some of them. But I ended up not remembering ANY because there were so many, you know? So what if, if you really want to solidify a word in your mind, you write a drabble for it? The one you wrote for you're more likely to remember. The other ones, no big deal. But you always have the choice.
Also, high! It's nice to talk to you again :o)

I feel bad about sucking so much with daily_words, but I really am a binge sort of personality. I get into something, REALLY into it, and then I get off and off for months, sometimes years. And then I am BACK. I do this to people, too; it's a wonder my friends put up with it.

Also, stillicide is indeed a fantastic word - thank you for introducing me to it.
Great Idea!
(Anonymous) 2010-11-04 02:47 am (UTC)(link)I love learning new words, and in the context of drabble seems to help.
Now I'm going to have to go look up "stillicide...."

I *don't* have pir8fancier friended, so thanks for the heads up! What a cool idea; she's really keeping it up!
I do think having to *use* a word helps me remember it.
I hope you looked up stillicide! I think we mostly have Nabakov to thank.

I just changed the rules so that people post, instead of comment, with the word of the day. Not sure which would be better. I guess I'll try it for a while and see what happens.
