New comm

Not something I should be doing while I'm supposed to be writing. Especially since I called in sick today. But! Maybe if I build it, they will come, which means I won't have to sustain it. It's a cool idea; I just have trouble with follow through.

Over on livejournal, I started a comm called [livejournal.com profile] daily_words. It was supposed to have a new word every day. Trouble number one: I suck and didn't keep it up. Trouble two: I have trouble remembering the new words, even when I'm making posts about them. Except for stillicide. How could I forget stillicide? That's a good 'un.

So, my idea was to make a mirror comm, [community profile] daily_words, but with a twist. It's actually a drabble community! A word gets posted once a day, and then if the word strikes you, or you really want to remember it, or the mood just is all upon you, you write a drabble using that word somewhere! And the drabble can be original or in any fandom. And possibly the drabble doesn't even have to be a drabble; possibly it just has to be short prose of at least 50 words, or a short poem.

Once DW gets that thing where you can put in posts and tell it when to post them, it might actually be plausible to keep the thing going. Another alternative is to ask people to volunteer to post words for a week/month/or day. Hm.

LJ Comms

C. So the comm for learning a word a day is a go! It's called [livejournal.com profile] daily_words. It will start either tomorrow or the day after. If someone would like to make an icon with the words, "daily_words" on it, then I'd use that for posting on the comm so when you were scrolling through your flist, you'd always immediately recognize it (*looks innocently at [livejournal.com profile] late_heart*).

If you join the comm: remember, I'll always be looking for new words. Feel free to participate--or not--in any way you please. You shouldn't feel the need to comment on the posts unless particularly compelled, and if you have any ideas for the comm or things you'd like to see, please contact me!

O. Does anyone know the name of that LJ comm that sums up either meta or wank (can't remember which) in short snarky soundbites? All I could find was [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes, which I don't think it is because these aren't actual quotes. But each post is some quick meta rendition of a wank or discussion. Sort of like Book-A-Minute (which you should totally check out if you haven't seen!) So a post might go like this:

SVA: Wah wah.
JKR: PWN.
Anne Rice: I have nothing to do with this, but also, wah.

MM. There's a meme going around right now where you're asked to comment with the lj name of someone in you think others might enjoy reading. I wanted to do that meme, except make it for comms (and not just for Jossverse). I find most LJ comms difficult to use. There are either too many posts with too much info/content I don't have time to peruse, or they die quickly and are never updated. Those with unlimited posting access for members lead to lots of random posts I don't want to read, but limited posting by mods is often too regimented or fails because the mods go off and do something else.

Anywho, comment with an lj community (or several!) you enjoy, and why you enjoy it. It can be in any fandom, or it doesn't have to be a fandom at all, if it's where you get your news, hometown connections, random artistic enrichment, etc. It can have a lot of members and posts or be nearly dead, just so long as you enjoy it.

Word-a-day

Does anyone know if there's a comm which gives you a word a day? Like Wordsmith.Org's A.Word.A.Day, which emails you a new word every day and gives you the definition?

If there's not a comm like that: If I made one, would anyone be interested in joining it? If so: I'd be posting a word a day on a comm. It'd supply the word and the definition, and then probably one other thing--such as origin or an example of usage or a picture--depending on the word. I'd be focusing on words that sound really cool, that don't come up on your thesaurus, or are really useful but I don't know them (you might know them, as I have a quite small vocabulary). I'd be looking at Wordie, websites which list cool words, poems, and probably books I'm reading with words I don't know. I'd take submissions if people wanted to share a word they loved.

There would be no commenting or participation required; it'd be more of a 'let's all pick something up as we do our daily flist scanning' type thing. I dream of it being like morning coffee. However, since I'm not good at keeping up with stuff, if people were in the comm and decided they enjoyed it, maybe eventually other people could help post so we could continue to learn a word a day for a long time. Like you'd just have to contribute one post a week, or if it had a lot of members, one post a month, so on. But I'm not asking for that now; maybe if I do do it, it won't be that much work, and I won't feel like I need help. I dunno really how stressful I would find it after a while, but I know I'm willing to try for several months at least.

Lemme know if you'd friend a comm like that, and if we have a few people, I'll start cookin'.

I've started a comm called [livejournal.com profile] tkpfic. At the moment, I'm going to use tkpfic in order to host all of my old fanfic. By "old" fanfic I mean fics that I wrote previous to becoming active on lj, which refers exclusively to non-Jossverse fics. The fandoms include but are not limited to: movieverse X-men, Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, L.M. Montgomery, The Godfather, Ever After, and yeah, I don't even know what. Many of these fics are unfinished WIPs, all of which I hope one day to finish (though the Alias and the Gilmore Girls ones are in high doubt); a few are one shots or series. Many of them were posted under a different pen name. Some are very old.

In the future, I hope tkpfic to serve two more purposes: 1. To host any other fic I might write in other fandoms again (I feel like if I say something like that, someone I know might burst into tears. Or someone else I know might kinda kill me. I am writing HP fic, but I'm not admitting it to myself. 56.4% of people polled think HP fandom is fucking scary. I tend to agree). 2. To host my kajilliondy billion word Buffyverse B/A Angel-goes-nuts epic thingy, and any other Really Long fics I might write. Since I resolved to no longer inflict WIPs on the world (read: [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves. Which is sad, because I made her read it while it is yet unfinished), this fic will be posted nearly all at once (when it's finished. It's not. But I hope to do it for [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational), or spead over a few days or weeks. Even posted over a few weeks, this fic is so massive that I don't really want to clog my flist. Even if you want me to clog my flist, I'd like the fic in a more contained place, not interspersed with crack polls and emo and wanting to know why 'shipper fics must have insta!lust (no, really, insta!lust is getting annoying).

However, yon' friends! Hope is ahead for ye, for most need not friend tkpfic! On this journal, [livejournal.com profile] tkp, I'll be posting normal fic headers and then fake cuts to every new Jossverse story I write. Ongoing fics or series that I've started on this journal will show updates here. When I post the Epic That Ate My Brain, I'll announce it here, and though I won't announce every chapter (that would defeat the point), I'll keep you updated so you know when it's done posting, for those who would like to read it straight through. If you decide you'd like to read it as it comes instead, you can friend tkpfic and then defriend it when I finish, no big. The same goes for any multi-chaptered fic I may ever post at tkpfic in the future: there will be header info here on tkp and notifications when it's finished (or something like every 10 chapters, if I ever do anything as long again as Epic of Doom). And the same goes for any other non-Jossverse fic I write: you will be informed of it here. Whether you like it or not. The same goes for when I finish some of my older work. And the same goes for right now, as I post my older stuff: I'm going to be telling you what's going up there, and you can choose to click the fake cuts if it's something that interests you.

The only reason you'd want to friend tkpfic is if you want to read every word of fic I've ever written regardless of fandom or length. Even I don't even really want to do that! Some day, (if [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves is still up for it) I'm going to have a website and it's going to have my Stuff in it in one place, all the pretty Jossverse fic and hopefully some other crap. Ooh, and essays.
