Job, Writing, Job of writing
Hahahha. Mercedes Lackey is in my inbox, telling me to write fanfiction. Seriously! Every couple days, NaNoWriMo sends a pep-talk email. The one today is from good ole Misty herself, who says if you want to write a story but are seriously stuck on world-building and characters, write fanfiction, because it'll get you writing, help you figure some stuff out, and it's fun.
Me and Mercedes Lackey, let's see. I love the Arrows of the Queen series, the first trilogy in the world of Valdemar. In fact, one of the first pieces of fanfiction I ever wrote was en epic rewrite of the second book, where Talia has to go on her tour with Dirk instead of Kris. I wrote maybe 60K words of it but most of it was rewriting from the beginning. I don't think this series is well-written, but I do still think it's enjoyable for the same reasons it was enjoyable to me in seventh grade: it's a classic hero story, with a girl hero, and horsies, and a love triangle, and my-emotions,-they-are-POWERFUL angst. I don't know what's not to love there, really.
My word count is the same today, because I did this thing for work where I went and talked about ocean acidification. There was a stand-up economist there; he was very funny; he talked about carbon taxes, which I suppose sound like a good idea. I'm glad the elections are over, not only here, but on The Wire. I talked to a very smart kid about pH and photosynthesis and calcium carbonate; he said it was funner than watching his dad pour cement! This is a good job that I have.
I've been writing fanfic based on my job, masquerading as girl!Sherlock fanfic. Seriously everything she's doing in this fic is stuff I've done AT MY JOB. Since Sherlock does a bunch of crazy things, that must be cool. Not that I flap about shirtless in dressing gowns, which of course she is doing. Does anyone want to britpick it? I was going to wait, because it's not finished, really. But honestly what with one thing and another, I'm not sure I'm ever going to finish anything, besides NaNo, I really did dedicate myself to that, and I do love what I did for the Holmes, so I might as well share. Speaking of Holmes, has anyone been reading
wordstrings? Best Sherlock fic I've read so far. Not quite my take on the characters, but I'm so in love with her characters now; I'd rather have fic of them! I'm going to write meta about it some day, but not now, because I've got thwacking to do, which probably won't get done, but I have high hopes for tomorrow.
Landlord's Daughter, that's my housemates' band, is playing a gig! I'm excited about the boots and gloves and hair and liquor and dancing and oh yeah, that music stuff.
