I don't know standard protocol for the time period would be, but why would John even still be at home? Maybe Mr. Collins is keeping it until John decides to move out? And I feel like John HAS to marry Caroline for the sake of keeping the book as in tact as possible, but I would have to re-read to find a reason for them to be that into each other.
Perhaps Mr. Darcy should, in fact, insult boy!Lizzy's appearance? He can be all, "I don't want to dance, I want to talk to some hot dudes. And there aren't any here." and then complain that Bingley is talking to the only attractive guy, so Bingley suggests John's brother, and Darcy is all ppffff not hot enough.
Maybe Mrs. Bennet, while upset that this guy has bought Netherfield, is also super excited and thinks her boys can make some upper class friends and be all involved in high society! Cuz Mrs. Bennet being all MY GIRLS MUST MARRY all the time is hilarious.
