*tries not to wince at the thought of pen on books* I was caught young by literary types, it's not my fault! I did also develop Nerd Sonar in order to walk and read though, so it's not all bad...

I am heartbroken that you saw the movie. Seriously. Just thinking bout it makes me feel slightly ill, but also quite stabby. Epecially towards Nicholas Cage. In the book, Capt Corelli is fun and musical and young and charming. Nicholas Cage is - NOT. And they almost totally cut my favourite character and changed the ending and generally utterly, utterly ruined a fabulous book.
It's a really good book. The descriptive writing is just gorgeous, there are lots of different and excellent POVs (and sections in letter form, which is one of my favourite things), and there are really cool patterns of imagery and illusions to other texts. Oh, and it's really funny. And there are great female characters as well. And interesting historical details.
