Fanfortnight Recap #2

Here's some GOOD THINGS that've been going on in fandom this fortnight, IMHO.

  • You thought I was going to photo compare VK and Martha Stewart, didn't you? I hope you did.
But! These are the GOOD THINGS that came out of The Great Connor // Jackson Browne debate:
    1. [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga said, and I quote, Connor is FUCKING HOT. My life's work, it is done.
    2. I found out I'm not the only one likening VK and Jonny Weir. I thought I was alone in that, and crazy. And then it turns out [livejournal.com profile] romanyg is already all over it. Plus, she's writing RPS. You are, romany, and you shall post one day, yes you shall.
    3. I think I already mentioned this elsewhere, but the idea, it . . . sings to me. [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 pictures VK in a boy's choir.
    4. [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue made a Jackson Browne "Lawyers In Love" video about the ep "Habeas Corpses". Yay! She hasn't posted it yet but I can't wait.

  • Speaking of that crazy diamond, Sue, she and [livejournal.com profile] elcazavampiros have been up to GOOD THINGS these past two weeks. Sue made a HI-larious S/X vid, Does This Make Me Gay. It's a funny story about Spike picking up Xander at a bar, then Xander waking up in the morning. Even if S/X isn't your cuppa, this is just funny because in the future, every clueless "huh wha?" moment of Xander's will have new meaning. And Caza did Hair, a vid about hair days of the Scoobies. One of the very best things about Sue and Caza's videos are the puns--watch really close for the A/S and B/A puns in "Hair", because they still have me laughing, and I think a lot of people must've blinked and missed them. So go watch again or again for the first time, because these're worth it.

  • Okay, this past week, one of the bestest and GOODest THINGs started, and that was the IWRY Marathon. I already pimped it here but I'm pimping again because it really is that good of a thing. So, I still haven't read Jo's story yet, so I'm behind, but:
These are great fantabulous scrumptulescent and GOOD THINGS coming out of the 2006 IWRY Fic Marathon:
    1. [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves is, as always, doing a bang up job of keeping a nice organized pretty flow of one B/A story a day.
    2. And the lovely graphics are by [livejournal.com profile] ba4ever and they still crank my cheesewheel.
    3. Pentimento, by [livejournal.com profile] lostakasha. As I told lostakasha, this should be crack slash crazy AU: Angel is a human landscaper and Xander is like a Slayer spa contractor and then there's sex. But instead, this story is about Buffy, about reconciling the past, about learning to live, and about endless return. The language is stunning.
    4. here, not waiting, by [livejournal.com profile] regala_electra. I'm not sure I've ever read a story that cut to the heart of what I really love about Buffy quite so much. This is some action/quest/adventure, and also some B/A, and also quite a bit of easy-reading light loveliness, but most of all it's Buffy as we hoped she would be: someone who accepts her life will never be normal, but does her damnedest to build her own joy in the life she does have.
    5. Ever After: Five Fairy Tale Endings, by [livejournal.com profile] seraphcelene. Each piece of this is a new way to look at characters and moments we all know and all know the endings to--except with these new views, SeraC twists everything into new conclusions--terrible, beautiful, morbid, tragic, and epic. This is a piece that gives you new eyes with which to watch, and an old heart to be broken all over again. Her imagery is spectacular, as always.

Hey, even if you don't love B/A, I hope more people give some of these a gander. They really are some of the best fics I've seen in quite a while.

  • There've also been some meta GOOD THINGs:
    1. [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 says pretty much everything I've ever wanted to say about shame and sexuality.
    2. [livejournal.com profile] janedavitt says pretty much everything I ever wanted to say about what my fics say about me.
    3. [livejournal.com profile] seraphcelene had an interesting question about how far along your idea is when you start to write, and what causes you to abandon one fic in favor of writing another.
    4. [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs has an interesting concrit discussion.

  • Hey, speaking of pimping. Yes, I am self pimping, because apparently you self pimping yourself needs to be self-pimped. But imo, it's a GOOD THING.
1a. There's a pimping party going on in my journal, where you pimp the fics that you think haven't gotten enough attention.
1b. Everyone should come comment because you get to pimp that you really feel like, or had hoped, should get more comments. The one you feel guilty about complaining about, because it did get comments, but that you do *want* to complain about because it didn't get the comments you felt it deserved, or didn't bring the people you thought it would, or just (meep) maybe went unseen?
1c. I thought there would be more comments on this post, and not because I'm a comment whore so much as because I thought everyone was a comment whore. Maybe you didn't see it because it was posted around the time of the blackout. Maybe you feel embarrassed or guilty or greedy or self-indulgent wishing you got a little more attention for this one story.

Don't feel that way. This is the one place where you can stroke your ego all you want to and not feel bad about it. As [livejournal.com profile] dovil says: it's supposed to be "a group hug of paranoia where everyone gets to run into the forest and dance around naked and heal their soul trauma. Or something. ... Plus it's a good way of pimping things that people might have genuinally missed the first time round and all." Please pony up.

It all depends on how you handle it.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Having seen it, I'd say with both hands.

Beats Martha's baster.

And suddenly that sentence isn't as innocent as it should be.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
There was something innocent in this entire thread??

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just meant I'd never be able to look up chicken recipes in my Martha cookbook ever again.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sure you will. Just don't think about VK on his back with his pretty pink mouth open, and his hair all mussed, tossing his head back and forth on the carpet while James Marsters goes down on him.

It's easy.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I need time alone with my Martha cookbook now. kthxbye

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Martha. If you only knew...

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
She'd probably try to buy shares.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Of VK? Well, who wouldn't? I'd rent him like a condo, too, if I had the cash.
ext_7189: (Default)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Always knew VK was just a dirty little rentboy.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
We've already established he's everything but little. As for the rest, a girl can (and does) dream.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not little where it counts.

There should be JM/VK hooker crack.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Fod had this scenario once (she didn't write it though, so, you know, feel free to make it so):

VK needs to research his role as a boy-whore for the play Slag Heap. What better way to research than to dress the part, hang out around town, see what er, comes up? While standing in the shadow of a doorway, wearing eyeliner and torn jeans, who should walk by? Yes.

And Marsters is all "kid looks familiar, but...hunh. Weird. Wtf." And he stares maybe one second too long. Ok, maybe two or fifteen. Enough for VK to grin and say "somethin on your mind?"

And the rest, as they say, is pornography.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
She has so many good ideas. This should be written.

So, does JM end up recognizing him? 'Cause we all know he could give whore lessons.

Or, oh, JM realizes he's putting on an act, but thinks it's 'cause this is Vinnie's first time whoring. Which it is. So James tells him to drop the act, this is how it's done. But Vincent, he's such a good pupil, he masters the teacher in the end, and JM is a bit of what the fuck. And then he kind of realizes he's been had.

Actually it could be very twisted and darkly psychological. Huh.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
We were going for twisted, although not necessarily dark. But if the dark moves you, man. Write on. Please. Write on.
ext_7189: (Default)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I meant dark in that it ends up that VK is fucking with JM's head. Like, playing a part that's playing a part that's possibly playing a part. 'Cause, well, for one thing the boy can act. And I like that...subversion of control/roles kinda stuff.

Yeah I dunno about writing it but it's certainly a kickass idea.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] ros_fod said she's already started it, which makes me madly happy!

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I know, she's sitting in my kitchen. Sneaky little mynx. :)
ext_7189: (Default)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
ha. well, I just didn't want to treat you two like a hive mind that knows everything the other knows, or anything.

[identity profile] ros-fod.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I've written up a fair bit of this, so if you wouldn't mind holding off on writing it yourself, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that makes me so happy!

I just said, yeah, I don't think I could write it.

Frankly, I'd much much rather read it.

oh, yay. I hope you finish and post one day!

[identity profile] ros-fod.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you finish and post one day!

Yeah, you and me both. :)

I feel that way about so many ideas I think are brilliant, that are all in the half formed filmy gross state of existence.

But, thinking about it for other people, there's none of the stress and all of the anticipation. So I'm rootin' for ya.
