I thought Luthe was blonde? And tall? And blue-veined. Actually the only part I remember about him was the veins. Which is weird because everyone has blue veins, but I guess she saw them, or something, which I took to mean he was pale. Am I making this up?
No! I didn't see that! I used to check her website periodically but not recently. I am cautiously excited. Thanks sooo much for telling me!
I thought Luthe was blonde? And tall? And blue-veined I have the book in my hands now: his eyes were heavy lidded and blue. His hair was curly as well as bright gold, and it grew low over his collar and ears. I loved that book! A new book by Robin McKinley is exciting news.
Oh, I wasn't saying that well. Luthe was tall and pale and had curly blond hair (that Aerin apparently enjoyed playing with), and I read that in descriptions, but I suck at visualizing things when I read, so I didn't see it. I could really only see Aerin's red hair because it got mentioned so many times. Even that doesn't always work; e.g. I can't "see" HP's green eyes when I'm reading unless I stop to think about it. I guess I'm just not very visual?
I don't see things in books at all. Unless, as you say, I stop and really try, and I find that a frustrating process. But I tend to remember the physical details, even if I don't implement them in my reading process. So even though I only read tH&tC once and that almost 10 years ago, I remembered Luthe was a blonde, but not because I'd ever really pictured him. Actually, Luthe is a not a good example as Luthe was someone I *tried* to picture a lot while reading, and failed miserably (I kept coming up with someone who was very veiny! Like Anya!).
One thing I did with Guy Gaveril Kay (can't remember if you've read him or not) and GGK only was pick out actors to play his roles, and I visualized them easily throughout reading. I don't know if this was a phase I was going through as a new way to read books, or whether his material just lends itself to that . . . because in his forum online, the largest and most active threads are "who would you cast as these characters?"
I find the idea of visualization in regards to a reader's experience of text extremely interesting, so I could go on about it for hours, sorry.
