What I love about fandom is that I knew some people would *have* to click spaceships. That just really really Strauss's my space landings, man. You should write fic with them getting Herpes.
John/Aeryn: Who Needs Claddaugh Rings When You Can Share Weapons?
Hee! What's funny about that is that that's the way I feel about B/A. Lots of people think they're about the rings. I tend to think they're about fisticuffs. But I find weapons more interesting than jewelry any day.
. . . My answers make not so much sense because most of my OTPs are text-based, and I can never get a good picture of the characters when I read--I shipped Luthe/Aerin for years, and all I know about their looks is that Aerin has red hair.
Also, did you see this? (http://robinmckinley.com/) Because . . . there are dragons! And storytelling! And general awesomeness! Squee eleventy!
I thought Luthe was blonde? And tall? And blue-veined. Actually the only part I remember about him was the veins. Which is weird because everyone has blue veins, but I guess she saw them, or something, which I took to mean he was pale. Am I making this up?
No! I didn't see that! I used to check her website periodically but not recently. I am cautiously excited. Thanks sooo much for telling me!
I thought a lot of people might not have trends. I think I definitely don't on the hair color, but I *do* tend to have one on the size/age issues. Still, there've been things I've shipped that don't hold for those either.
I'm interested to see that the thing most people's otps have in common insofar as their actions in canon is that they've punched each other.
Faith has totally decked Dean. In our heads. *nods*
I kept answering, "None fit." There are definitely patterns in the way I ship, just not hair patterns. The "relative size" question was actually the only one I could have answered with some consistency, if only you had included, "big or small, but more or less equal," but even then...le'see...
Buffy/Spike: blond/blond, short/short, good/redeemed, young & stupid/old & stupid, notably antagonistic at some point in relationship Aragorn/Arwen: dark/dark, 6'+/6'+, good/good, young & wise/old & wise Thomas Mendip/Jennet Jourdemayne: ?/?, ?/?, good/good, young & smart/young & smart Neville/Draco: brown/blond, [tall in my fanon]/tall, good/redeemable, young/young Harry/Draco: dark/blond, [tall in my fanon, because they must be nose to nose, as adults]/tall, good/redeemable, young & stupid/young & stupid, notably antagonistic at some point in relationship Ellen Fanshaw/Geoffrey Tennant: reddish brown/dark, tall/taller, middle-aged & fucked up/middle-aged & bonkers, notably antagonistic at some point in relationship Roland Mitchell/Maud Bailey: dark/light, short/tall, youngish & smart/youngish & smart Elizabeth/Darcy: [dark honey-blonde, in my head]/dark, ?/tall, young & smart/young & smart, notably antagonistic at some point in relationship
The single constant in my OTPing seems to be that all these people have something vital to teach their other halves. Lessons may involve a lot of squawking and snarking. Certain equalities are important to me -- not necessarily age, but experience, or ability to process experience.
There are definitely patterns in the way I ship, just not hair patterns.
I did this poll based on the assumption that people ship for deeper reasons than physicality, but I wanted to see if physical attributes reflected those deeper reasons. If that were true then lots of our preferred ships would have similar physical attributes, or such was my theory. It wasn't a theory I angsted over testing in a very conclusive manner.
dark honey-blonde, in my head
Really? When Austen said it was "dark" I assume that meant some shade of brown.
The single constant in my OTPing seems to be that all these people have something vital to teach their other halves.
This is really interesting to me, because I have recently come to the same conclusion. I've already whined to you about Draco/Harry blindsiding me and me not being able to explain it to myself, especially in light of the 'ships I usually prefer. And I think we discussed also that it's very possible Draco could have something to teach Draco, and it's about intimate human sympathy (as opposed to what Harry could teach Draco, which I'd call selflessness and universal compassion/humaneness. And yes, I notice that that is very Buffy/Spike. Which I believe I flailed all over about in your journal). So anyway that's what made me come to my conclusion about needing a couple to be able to teach each other something.
The thing I have always loved most about Jane Austen is that every single one of her primary pairings is that way.
I couldn't answer most of this poll. **sobs hysterically**
I find JM/Spike hot on occasion but my normal respinse is not damp panties. My normal response is Oh, he's obviously standing on a box again, you wee little thing. And sometimes my response is have you registered those cheekbones as a weapon? Eat something, already.
I don't have a lot of OTPs. For example, over on BSG, I really don't care who's boffing who. Although Helo & Sharon are cute together.
For me, OTPs arise from whether the couple makes each other better people and, just as important, happier. I do not go for couples that are long term destructive to each other, hence my apathy toward Apollo/Starbuck. They're a train wreck.
So, my OTPs: Buffy/Angel - tiny/huge, blonde/dark, hero/hero, superpowered/superpowered, young/really old
Barbara Gordon (Oracle, formally Batgirl)/Dick Grayson (Nightwing, formally Robin) - tall (5'11")/average (5'10"), redhead/dark, hero/hero, crippled/normal, older (by about 5 years)/younger
Clark Kent (Superman)/Lois Lane (This refers to the comics) tall/medium, dark/dark, hero/morally upstanding, superpowerd (nonhuman)/normal, about the same age.
The only consistency I see is I have a thing for dark haired, very buff guys. Which I already knew.
24. ACK. You'll likely see a recap tomorrow. Part of was lack of time. But a bigger part was the show was making me physically ill, so I could barely watch it, let alone write about it. But I'll talk about that tomorrow.
My normal response is Oh, he's obviously standing on a box again, you wee little thing.
OMG, R, I love you. HAHAHA!
I don't have a lot of OTPs. For example, over on BSG, I really don't care who's boffing who. Although Helo & Sharon are cute together.
It used to be I only got *really* into something if I could have an OTP in it. But lately that's been different. I like BSG and House exceedingly, and yeah, I don't really care.
24
is making me ill, but not physically. I hope you are alright? I'm not even sure why I watch any more except that it's TiVo'd at the same time as Heroes and my family watches one right after another.
Of course I love you, you goof. If I were you perhaps I *would* be physically ill having to watch closely enough to do those things.
Go write Jossverse drabbles instead. I love your drabblin'.
But when are you coming over to see how big my ASS really is and realize I'm not so weensy?
Anyway, some clarification, though I may be incoherent from laughter.
I don't really feel like I OTP a lot. I mean, I'll read anything good, though all things being equal I'll lean towards Buffy/Spike (but did you notice I answered "Spike is hot and JM's not"?). But I don't think it's indicative of anything. Because in POTO, I'll read anything good. And mostly anything good requires people NOT getting along, because it only makes sense. So in the questions about "my OTP" I answered for Erik/Persian.
What I'm saying is that lots of the options didn't seem to apply. When I can't see him, I'll even read DB.
There is no way your ass can be big. You forget that I am Amazon lady of extreme proportions. Okay, not extreme, pretty normal side considering my height and bone structure, but your butt could totally fit in one of my ass cheeks. Just sayin'.
The thing is, I OTP like a madwoman, but I rarely OTP really *hard* unless it's in a fandom I *like*. And once I've gone through and completely gorged myself on the 'ship, I step back, and enjoy reading things about the other characters, even seek out things about the other characters. Though to amend that OTP statement, in a few fandoms I've really had OTCs--POTO is one; at first I *only* wanted to read stories with Erik. Now I'll read just about any phics if they're well done.
I think for a lot of people, most options didn't apply, either because like you, they don't OTP that much, or because their 'ship preferences aren't mirrored by the physical attributes of the characters (which was really what I was interested in finding out).
What I was actually interested in with that question, I think, was does the size difference interest you? When you're reading fic, or thinking about C/A, or doing anything shippy things you do, do you enjoy thinking about the size discrepancy, about Angel's large hands enveloping Cordelia's slender wrists, or do you prefer to think along the lines of they match each other physically, what a tall couple they make, or how...healthy Cordy's boobs look in Angel's hands? Come on. Anyway, I see now it was a badly worded question...I answered biger/smaller when not *many* of the thing I ship have an extreme size difference (for instance, none so extreme as B/A), just because I like to *think* about the size difference.
Yeah, I kinda have a *lot*. The most distressing question for me was the hair one, because off the bat I thought of a whole lot of 'ships very dear to me that're all brunettes, and there were only two or three big ones I could think of that had blondes in them, but now I keep thinking of more. And there are redheads. Ah, well ;o)
Huh. So I'm counting all the ElfQuest pairings I wrote back in the day, which all involve original ageless characters of every hair color and size differential imaginable (because after crash landing on the primitive magic-dampening human-infested planet, the elves shrunk, generation by generation, from about six feet to about four feet tall, but they were pretty much immortal, so you could have a six-foot firstcomer sexing up a four-foot tenth-generation elf if you wanted) and none of them owned claddaugh rings.
One of the reasons I wanted to do this was because I don't choose 'ships based on the physicality or the surface facts, and I guessed not many others did either. But I wondered if what we *do* choose them on is somehow reflected in physicality (for instance, one of my deeper kinda psychological draws to a 'ship is often superficially reflected in the ages of the characters I tend to 'ship).
I think the answer is on the whole NO because most people couldn't really answer most the questions ;o)
The question I thought most illuminating for ME was the one about "in CANON, these two characters have...," which showed just how much I like my pairings to hate each other -- to start out. Of course, that's just traditional romance fun, isn't it? Every Harlequin romance ever written begins that way. I guess I haven't changed much from my preteen days. How sad.
I think most pairings I enjoy reading are "one character good/one character bad/reformed/on-the-way-to-being-reformed." I still like the bad boys (in fantasyland). Again, I haven't changed. Damn, I am so immature.
Yeah, I was interested in seeing how many people's ships were antagonistic to each other at one point. I, for one, most often fall for ships in which the characters are friends, or drawn to each other in some way, rather than the old romance trope of being antagonistic, on opposite sides, and whatnot. But having recently fallen for shipping two dudes who hate each other, I began to wonder how much that factors into who we ship. I still don't quite understand what draws me to the ships I'm into, but hey, who does.
And anyway that's not immature. For instance, lots of girls feel that way in a fantasy sense, but not in real life. Or! Like Anne, "like it if he could be wicked, and wasn't." Which I think is only being fair to our deep dark incomprehensible desires!
Eee! Hi Amy! Hi hi hi! How *are* you! It's been forever. I miss you. I am a bad contact.
I think HRG is awesome, but not so much attractive. I *did* notice in the last ep that he was *more* attractive without his glasses in those flashbacks.
Should've known you would love him, though. You have a thing for fathers, you totally do. I think some other people do think he's hot, though. Me not so much, but I just can't *wait* to see what he does next, so much so that I'm aquiver with anticipation for him!
I was so pleased to see "Julie Andrews really is timeless" was winning in this poll! I was thinking of you with that option!
This was fun but a bit difficult to answer since I have more than one OTP. Even with just the two main OTPs, not everything applied.
Although I did pick Clark/Lex for the 'in canon' portion because they HAVE had a CHILD together IN CANON (comics)! Genetic engineering, ain't it grand? Whee!
And my weensiness made your poll. This makes me grin.
Seems like finding Spike hot but not James is the "it" thing to do these days. So it was just the bleached hair and personality that did it? If the rest of him is so unattractive to most people, then where did all this fuss about his bones and eyes come from? It couldn't have just been me. LOL *scratches head*
Bleached hair, personality. And ill-fitting coat. And cigarettes!
No, I think it's obvious that if you find Spike attractive you've got to find some things about JM attractive too. It's just, I think without all the Spike-accoutraments, some people don't find his cheekbones and eyes enough to find him attractive over-all. Also, Spike is timeless; JM is aging.
Personally I find older!JM sexier than younger!JM.
