It's Lion Turtles all the way down ([personal profile] lettered) wrote2007-03-08 09:34 pm

Ate, got robbed, ate some more.

I have drama! Not whiny emo drama either, I have true, juicy drama!

So there I was, eating my gyro at this Greek place where once we dined with Destiny's Child, and while I was in the restaurant, someone bashed the back window of my car, and made off with Against The Day by Thomas Pynchon! This was a book my brother gave me for Christmas! The fourth worst thing about it is I write lots of notes in the margins. The third worst thing about it is I tend to keep cds in big thick books, and I think I had Mercy Brown in this one (eta: Mercy Brown was not in Pynchon, it was in Harry Potter! So YAY). The ironic thing about Bad Thing #3 is Mr. Whosit made off with Pynchon, but left my cds (2 notebooks full of more than 100 cds. They got whatever cds were in Pynchon). I'd say the guy had taste, but that suggests my taste in music is bad, which I don't think it is, because it's mine you know, and also, you have to wait for #1 for the full extent of his awesome discretion. The second worst thing about it is I have to replace my window, and that's going to cost a lot. Bummer.

The worst thing about it was Pynchon was in my bag with my laptop. This guy is now in full possession of a computer full of Buffy porn, Harry Potter porn, that random RPS porn . . . and the back up disk inside that contained back ups of everything I ever did in undergrad. It was in there so I could html my POTO fics to put up for [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga. In some ways, this is all [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga's fault. Kidding! But anyway, they got the POTO non-porn, too.

Luckily, my dad had a copy of that disk. Also luckily, I'm a great big old loser who hasn't done much original writing in the past year, and that's the main thing I'm always worried about losing when I lose stuff. Some of the little (and most important) I've done is backed up. The rest I can't really even remember, so I'm not too stressed about it.

There were some vids I dl'ed, and some bookmarks I should've put on del.ici.ous, but actually, things are not looking too bad.

The only other thing on there was fic. Lots and lost of unfinished fic! Like that total crack Angel/Spike all human AU where they met as young anarchist terrorists, and Liam taught William to blow things up, and then they meet years later and Liam is Angel, a much more legitimate revolutionary warlord, and Spike is so burned out by all the desertion and betrayals and that stint he spent in prison where Liam never came to save him, that he's a whore for the dark side in both the sexual and the metaphoric sense. Yeah, that fic is gone forever.

And a couple chapters of Best Souvenir (eta: only about two chapters, I think! YAY. I had more backed up than I thought). And whatever I had of the third fic in the War Stories series I'm still trying to do. Since Chrisleeoctaves sent me back all the bits I sent her of my big massive epic thing I still have most of that, so yay, and I still have some other chapters of Best Souvenir, so yay, and for some reason I was always freakishly scrupulous of backing up whatever I have of my Buffy/Connor novella, so yay.

Hopefully it won't be too long before I get a new laptop. Since I'm living at home, I definitely have the money for it, it's just a shame I have to spend it on this. And a shame I have to use this computer because it sucks monkey feet.

SUPER SPECIAL NOTE TO K and [livejournal.com profile] samsom: POTO fic won't be up at [livejournal.com profile] tkpfics for a while.

SUPER SPECIAL NOTE TO [livejournal.com profile] stoney321, [livejournal.com profile] redbrickrose or [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia: could one of you send me back that H/D fic I sent as an attachment, as I don't have that backed up anywhere? Thanks so much. I'd be sad to lose it, even if it *is* 100 pages of H/D with no H/D. I'm sad the 15 pages I wrote since I sent it to you is gone forever! eta: THANKS STONEY!

SUPER SPECIAL NOTE TO [livejournal.com profile] brandil: uh, I'll send you that fic when I one of the ladies I've already sent it to forwards me a copy.

I know there are things I will be missing over the next several months, but hey. They didn't steal my car, I'm alive, and it was a really good gyro.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Christ, girlfriend.

I'm so glad you're okay, and that most of the stuff is backed up, though I am of course, really sad about the Spangel crack.

Laptop soon, cause monkey feet stink like, uhm. Monkey feet.

Love to you.

[identity profile] hannasus.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, that sucks! I think I'd freak if I lost all that unfinished writing lurking on my laptop that I swear I'll get back to one day even though I know I won't.

What restaurant was it so that I know not to go there?

I'm glad you're fine, your car will be fine, and that your gyro was really, really better than fine, but...

::weeps::

Man, that would've RULED.

Dude. That is sad.

damn!

I'm glad YOU'RE okay; that's the important. Fuck the fic.
And you know what? I can't wait to see the look on that fukker's face when he/she pops some cd's into their player and finds out it's not music but porn.

Hmmm. The buffy and angel 'verse may have a new fan... ;-)

Jebus. I'd almost rather they steal my car than my computer. I hope the police recover it, though I know that's a long shot.

I'm having some thoughts:

1. GOD, I'm sorry. That's totaly crap.

2. Holy mother of god you are prolific.

3. I find it amusing that you write all these reams of crack but never post it. The fic you post tends to be much more SERIOUS BUSINESS.

4. You brain makes me curious. And happy.

5. I'd say something about monkey sex, but you and Kita seem to have covered that topic.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
While I'm happy it wasn't that serious - and god, it's been years since I had a good gyro - I'm really depressed for myself, because some crackhead addict is reading the POTO before *me*.

And god, he won't even properly appreciate it.

Also, I learned way more than I ever thought I would about monkey sex. Now I'm wondering - do girl monkeys have a clitoris?

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not mostly upset about the loss of that Spike/Angel crack. Really. I'm feeling really bad for you and your overall loss. And my loss of that story.

Damn! I've had my laptop stolen, and that's just a horrible feeling. All your Buffy porn, other writings, important thoughts...at the mercy of someone else. That's horrible! I'm here if you need to vent. Also - only you could write a post this entertaining about something that horrific. You're the bees' knees. *hugs you*

[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you're okay.

[identity profile] semby.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! That's just awful. I'm sorry about your laptop. It's pretty sad, but I think in this day and age we can get to the point where we feel like our *whole lives* are in these little machines and the thought of losing it all is absolutely awful. I'm glad you had backups of the really important stuff. I'm sad and mournful about the lost fic :( And also sorry about your book and your window!

[identity profile] anelith.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What a horrible thing to happen! And how like you to write this as if it were an amusing little thing, nothing much (unless you're much more attached to that Pynchon book than I imagine you are), until wham -- we find out it's not so very amusing at ALL. I'm so sorry!

What a shame that your car insurance doesn't cover the cost at least of your window breakage, if not the laptop. Now I want to check my own policy. I've been going on the assumption it did cover that kind of thing...

So sad to hear about the lost files and stories. What a shame.

[identity profile] chrisleeoctaves.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The loss of stuff SUCKS...but it it much more important to me that you are okay and hey! you had a really good gyro!
*loves*

[identity profile] filmnoir6.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you're okay, tkp. All of the other things can be replaced--at least you weren't hurt of assaulted.

I'm glad you backed up a number of your written works that were lost (drafts! keep prior drafts!!). I'm also bummed they made off with your book and an awesome CD (maybe Ms. D can send ya another one or )

[identity profile] stephanierb.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh man, that sucks. I'm really sorry. I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it could've been, though.

I haven't read all of the comments, but are you sure your insurance doesn't cover the window? Insurance policies generally do unless you don't have comprehensive.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Who knew that theives were so intellectual that they would bust a window just to get at Pynchon. Unless you think the laptop had something to do with it. **g**

Aaron just read his first Pynchon and liked it. I will question him closely to make sure he's not involved.

I weep for the loss of crack!fic.

I have BS through chapter 18 if that helps.

You will be getting the next beta of BS this weekend, even if that doesn't help.

Monkeys do this sort of thing simply because Jane Goodall is a well known monkey porn producer and she had corrupted many to the dark side.

[identity profile] lostakasha.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank goddess all they got was your stuff. And with your mind, your energy, and your ability to express yourself so exquisitely, whatever ideas were taken will return in some form, soon.

{{{{{{clings to you}}}}}}}}

It's shitty, freaky and upsetting to be a robbery victim no matter what was taken. So don't let people like me try to diminish your experience with stories about the time they took your special underpants and your athame, which you just happened to store in the same drawer as your sex toys, okay? (Yes, that's true. But everyone's got a story.)

I'm so glad you're okay. And Pynchon? Fuck! I would be furious over that, myself!

[identity profile] brandil.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh TKP! My heart is breaking for you. On the flip side though, you could be converting someone to fannish tendencies if only for the porn.

[identity profile] elcazavampiros.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG How horrible! I know the feeling of violation you must be feeling well. When we had our laptop stolen, I thought the world would end, but apparently it didn't.

They didn't steal my car, I'm alive, and it was a really good gyro. At least there was a bright side.

Eep! I'm glad you're okay, but I'm so sorry about your computer. I was traumatized when my hard drive crashed; I can only imagine how much worse it would be to have it stolen.

I'm at work (where I shouldn't be playing on lj, but whatever), but I can send the H/D back to you tonight if you still need.

[identity profile] violaclaire.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, that's awful. I'm so sorry about your computer, but at least you're okay.

OMG! That is traumatizing and serious stuff, chica! I'm glad that you're a-okay. Dude. Seriously. You're taking the computer loss very well. And books!! Woe.

But I am very glad that you're okay.

[personal profile] lynnenne 2007-03-09 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, that sucks all kinds of ass. Especially about the lost fic. I'm glad you didn't lose too much, though.

Can you file a claim with your insurance company for the car window and the laptop? Car insurance should cover the window, and most homeowners' insurance policies will cover any household items stolen out of your car. I got money for my golf clubs when they were stolen out of my trunk.

[identity profile] imnotacommittee.livejournal.com 2007-03-09 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap, that's terrible, Joy! As others have said, I'm glad you're OK, and it could have been worse. But it's still crap. I don't know what I'd do if my laptop with its meager startings of SoM fic had been stolen.

I'm glad you're all right, and maybe there will be an open window from all this (aside from the kick ass gyro). Your attitude is commendable.

Sending hugs and stuff.

[identity profile] canadiangirl-86.livejournal.com 2007-03-10 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes. That's pretty scary. I'm just glad you're okay!
