I'm sure everyone and their mom will see this in the morning, but for anyone who's awake now:
Six Apart's CEO apparently has something to say.

eta: Frankly, this was very close to the Best Projected Response I felt we could hope for. The entire fiasco is framed as a mistake, something they're heartily sorry for. What I don't see is a) anything like a promise ensuring they'll never do anything like that again, and b) [in addition to the admission that they want to keep the comms and users trying to "prevent and understand" things such as rape and incest] an explicit admission that comms and users that portray these things in fictional settings for fictional purposes will not be targeted.

I'm still not giving LJ any money. I'm still going to write my snail mail letters. I'm still going to harp on about acting, so that we can make sure this never happens again.

I'm keeping my account at GreaterJournal. I'm keeping my voice. And I am keeping my outrage.

I'm forgiving. But I'm not forgetting.

Skirting around the fiction issue (whether it be fanfiction or original) disturbs me too. There are so many "illegalities" that get treated in fiction all the time - let's start with murder-themed stories, especially where the murderer is a Byronic or anti-hero who gets away (:cough:Hannibal Lecter:cough:) It's just that we don't have a moral panic going right now about murder (well, except in video games, I guess - which a judge in my state a few years ago actually ruled wasn't protected speech - fortunately he was overruled by a higher court.)

Businesses are built on trust. Yes, LJ doesn't *have* to provide the soapbox - but OTOH account holders don't have to give them $$ or advertising space, either. And trust is a very difficult thing to rebuild once it's been abused - whether it's in a personal or business relationship.

I feel like I understand *why* they skirted the fiction issue. There's a very definite side of an indefinite fence where certain kinds of people writing certain kinds of things for certain audiences is just WRONG (pedophiles on the net, for instance). But that's their perogative, and mine to leave whenever I feel my personal rights as a human being are being infringed upon.

A person's first "mistake" (this is LJ's first real mistake for me) I would just say let's shake and forget about it. But as you point out this is a business and we have to deal with each other in terms of exchange. So I'm definitely going to withhold certain things, and continue to speak out. Hopefully others will too and that will prevent this from happening in the future.
