phantom of the opera-anime

When I was first getting into POTO, someone linked me to this fanvid someone made of the ALW POTO Overture...dance mix...played over this...anime. I always remembered it forever because 1) it creeped me out. 2) it's utterly fascinating how well this anime seems to fit POTO. 3) I spent hours and hours wondering what the anime could possibly be about. 4) there were skulls and roses and stuff, and sad phan that I am, I get all fascinated by flowers and death.

Anyway, so I mentioned the vid to [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga, and she hadn't seen it before. Thank god for YouTube.

I looked it up on amazon: it's called Katsuhiro Otomo Presents: Memories. It looks really good, and is pretty cheap used. Thanks for posting it! I don't watch much anime at all, but this looks like something I'd like. And it does really fit well with the POTO song.

S recognized it right away; we're not going to watch the rest of the video because we've been meaning to see it!

But I'll save it, and come back to it. Thanks, J!

Okay, how did you hear about this anime?

I actually saw it for rent at Blockbuster, of all places, once, and was going to rent it but was with people who Would Not Understand and I didn't have my card, so I thought I'd come back. But then I did and they weren't carrying it any more.

It's based on short stories by a guy S loves. You should see the books. They have absolutely everything available to rent out here, so if we get a hold of it I'll get you a copy.

Oh, cool. Maybe I'll give the manga a try someday.

Yeah, now that I've found it again I looked it up too. I've never watched anime before (except Dragonball Z. Is that anime? Anyway).

As I said to K below, I actually saw it for rent at Blockbuster but then fate had me over and I never did get it while it was there.

The thing is, I'm not even sure I want to see the actual cartoon; I have so much fun trying to figure out what the plot could possibly be. It's like 2001 Space Odyssey meets POTO.

I love Anime.

I've never watched anime. Unless you count dragonball Z. I used to watch that fairly regularly.

I used to watch DBZ, but it gets kinda annoying because of the drawn out fight sequences. Talking heads all over the place and battles that last for Episodes. I will never forget the Cell arc because I will never get those days of my life back that I lost as the gang fought and were beaten into the ground by the uber unstoppable super villan. I tend to go for the dark, angsty, shorter serials like Wolf's Rain and Trinity Blood. Bleach has been interesting, but it's got a little of the DBZ battle Syndrome, although the battles in Bleach don't usually go on for more than two or three eps.

Hmmm .... Blood Plus has been really, really good. Basilisk is AMAZING. Trigun is also very good. Love Inuyasha for one of the longer series and also the original Ranma 1/2 episodes. The later series are just ... odd to me. I've been wanting to try Naruto, but no joy yet. I can't seem to manage to keep sync with Full Metal Alchemist, so even though I like it, I'm never quite sure if I know what's going on. Then, of course, there's always movies. Kiki's Delivery Service is tres cute. Spirited Away is probably one o' my favorites.

Yup, DBZ is anime.

Anime isn't a genre; it's a medium (like watercolor, oil, fiction, etc.) There are many different genres within anime. I favor the more dramatic stories, in full length movies like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle (all by Hayao Miyazaki), or the modern magical realism tale Tokyo Godfathers, or the poignant and bitter World War II story of the firebombings, Grave of the Fireflies.

Oh my god, J, you are sorely lacking in a fundamental area of good pop culture. This must be remedied.

Speaking of You Tube, I found this today. Hmmmmm.

That was SO AWESOME! Bad. Dirty. Wrong. AWESOME!! Loved it. The fade in and out was a tad annoying but only because I was all ... WAIT! what's happening, I can't SEEEEEE!! That is a fabulous find!!
ext_7262: (Default)

[identity profile] femmenerd.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know! And yeah, but without the fade in and out the illusion would be lost that all that extra footage didn't come from other movies where Alan Rickman is playing completely different characters makin' in with different ladies...

But you're right--it's so well-done that you THINK that the moment could be sustained.

That was really well done, but made me rather nauseous. EW is so young it's really...ew.

[identity profile] femmenerd.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It was, and I agree. But I was kind of impressed.

And for some reason I'll watch vids for almost ANY pairing if it's well done. I'm quite slutty about vids that way, I suppose.
ext_7189: (Default)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not the pairing itself, which I like; it's the age of EW here.

But anyway, yeah, me too, I like well done vids for more pairings than I'll read well done fic for. Part of it's just 'cause vids are short and require less brain power to watch; they are instant gratification.

You Tube is a joy and a delight. So much awesome spread all over the place for everyone to enjoy. Me and the younger bros spent the beginning part of today bonding over You Tube. Precious!

I really don't use YouTube that much--I suck at finding the kind of things I would want to watch there--but man am I glad it's there. I would be so sad if stuff like this POTO vid were lost to the ether.

Yeah, I can't navigate You Tube to save my life. I always get to see the more interesting stuff through my brothers. The most exciting I can get is to see if I can find old 80's music videos. I drooled over the awesome of A-Ha's Take on Me the other day, then went on to Extreme's More Than Words, some Damn Yankee's and Guns N' Roses. But then I couldn't think of anything else to go looking for.

[identity profile] kwizbit.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I friended you. I'm a fan of Angel and Buffy, I'm in on this whole LJ/6A thing going down, and reading through a few of your posts, I'd really like to have you on my flist. You can add me back if you'd like. No offense taken if you don't. I just hope you don't mind me friending you.
ext_7189: (Default)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
On the contrary, I'm so pleased to have you around!

I don't add people back very often because I have difficulty keeping up with my flist as is, but I tend to visit lots of offlist journals anyway and just reply willy nilly, so I'll be around. Also, you should feel free to defriend me at any time, no problem.

Thanks, and welcome!

[identity profile] kwizbit.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, why thanks m'dear!

Yes, you have quite the list going on there! Definitely come visit me sometime ;)

Thanks for the welcome!
