Questions Post #2

About a month ago I had a bunch of questions. A bunch of people answered them, which made me happy, because now I feel a lot less ignorant. But I still have a lot of questions about lj and fandom. Almost all of them are opinion questions, because I'm interested in general consensus. I'm not looking for anyone to form my opinion for me, but it's nice knowing what other people think, especially if there's some sort of group opinion (again, not that I'd be swayed by group opinion). For instance, the question about Holtz? I'd be so comforted if a large body of people could answer "no" to that question.

General

-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
-Are there any Wesley/Virginia fics out there?
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?

Names/endearments/appellations

-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?

Lj etiquette

-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
-Is having a paid account really worth it?
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)

Smut

-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
-Wouldn’t it be kinda difficult for a human male to maintain an erection while being bitten and sucked on by a vampire? I gave blood (in hopes of helping hurricane refugees in my town, yay) today, and felt cold and limp like a noodle afterwards. Arousal? Difficult to conceive of. Then again, not a human male. What gives? Or doesn't give?

'k. That's all for now. Thanks.

The thing I think is weird is when people rec without sending feedback, but apparently a lot of people do that too.

That is weird. And a shame, imo.

Mainly because I've gotten more into post-relevant icons and it's annoying to keep switching them. I also think it would be fun to customize the look of the lj some,

So that's what you get? Icons and customization? Hmm. My problem is that my father drilled into me the idea that paying any regular fee for anything is Evil, and difficult to get out of. Also, I pretty much like sticking with one icon--it's a recognition thing. But I love it when other people have millions of icons--I've seen some people have whole conversations just using their icons, and some of them are just so frickin' funny.

Do you have your own opinions on any of them, since a lot are opinion-based?

I'm sure with some my opinion is obvious (as with the Holtz question ;o), but on most of them I can't decide or I'm on the fence, which is why I ask. For instance, I've been going back and forth about what B & A would call each other ever since I started reading B/A fic. At one time I quite liked both "lass" and "baby" for Buffy from Angel, but now I'm very tired of both. In fact, I've thought about it so much that now they're kinda making me ill.

But I do have opinions about these things:

-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?

The idea of Darla calling Angel "childe"--as in, "come here, childe" is ludicrous, imo. The idea of her saying, "Angel is my childe because I Sired him," however, produces a meh in me. The idea of Buffy saying "Angel is Darla's childe because she Sired him" however, is perfectly alright with me. In fact, I like it, because there's no canon way for that relationship between Sire and ? to be expressed.

-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?

I asked this because I can be painfully shy. Even if I really want to comment on a personal post, I almost always feel uncomfortable doing it. Sometimes I make myself, if I think the poster would benefit from what I have to say. Sometimes I make myself because I think the idea of being shy in these situations is illogical--if they put it out there for me to see, I should be able to comment. And yet, there are very few (or no) people on lj with whom I can comment about personal stuff without feeling at least some discomfort. The nice thing about the internet is it's all text, so I can edit and edit and no one can no how uncomfortable I really feel. As in now, for instance ;o) It's inconvenient, really, because there're plenty of people on lj who seem interesting who I'd like to know in a personal way, but what I want isn't at all supported to what I feel like when doing it. Bummer.

-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?

Yes. The one time I did it without someone who was already a member of the community suggesting I do it, I felt like I was intruding. I understand what you say about it being a free forum to meet people, but knowing that what I post gets spammed to EVERY member of that community freaks me. I am much more comfortable on message boards and the like; people only have to look at those if they want (but mailing lists are even worse).

-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well?

Again, painfully shy. Though what you say about mentioning how you got there might make me feel better.

Also hoping for recs for Angel-as-sub-partner fics.

Me too.
