Questions Post #2
About a month ago I had a bunch of questions. A bunch of people answered them, which made me happy, because now I feel a lot less ignorant. But I still have a lot of questions about lj and fandom. Almost all of them are opinion questions, because I'm interested in general consensus. I'm not looking for anyone to form my opinion for me, but it's nice knowing what other people think, especially if there's some sort of group opinion (again, not that I'd be swayed by group opinion). For instance, the question about Holtz? I'd be so comforted if a large body of people could answer "no" to that question.
General
-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
-Are there any Wesley/Virginia fics out there?
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?
Names/endearments/appellations
-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?
Lj etiquette
-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
-Is having a paid account really worth it?
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)
Smut
-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
-Wouldn’t it be kinda difficult for a human male to maintain an erection while being bitten and sucked on by a vampire? I gave blood (in hopes of helping hurricane refugees in my town, yay) today, and felt cold and limp like a noodle afterwards. Arousal? Difficult to conceive of. Then again, not a human male. What gives? Or doesn't give?
'k. That's all for now. Thanks.

-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
I really don't know. Maybe he never had a reason to be shirtless while he was with Connor? But you'd think there'd be at least a few times where he'd be in the middle of getting dressed and Connor would start crying and he'd have to run... but no. Unfair. Have you seen the picture from DB's new movie where he's shirtless holding a baby? Is that what sparked this question? If not, you must.
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
I'm sure someone does. Not me though.
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
I don't know! It just got worse and worse, didn't it? I hated it blonde. As long as she was brunette, I liked it whether it was long or short. She had great hair, once.
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
I haven't seen much mention of the movie, but I'll go with no. I think I've heard that the movie wasn't up to Whedon's vision. I have seen the movie, but it's been a long time so I don't really remember, but I'm pretty sure some things were contradicted as well. For instance, Buffy was a senior in the movie, but moved to Sunnydale as a sophomore.
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
Well, I do like him, so I have nothing to feel guilty for. But it's okay to not like certain characters, and he wasn't around long, so I'd say there's no necessity for guilt.
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
No. Hell no. You've seen "She", right? I know that was a phantasy sequence, but wow. He can slow dance though.
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
I don't really see it, but hee!
-Are there any Wesley/Virginia fics out there?
Probably, but I haven't seen any.
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
No. He's not personally my type, but I can see what's sexy about him. Especially in his voice. That was some voice.
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?
Well, I personally am not the biggest fan of chest hair, so I won't say any more on this matter. I'm thankful, no matter the reason.
-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
I've seen him use a lot in fics, but most of them make me twitchy. He never used any on the show, did he? So I can't really picture any. But I'm sure in the heat of the moment something similar to "my love" or "sex-kitten" could come out...
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
I can see her using "honey" and "sweetheart" but that's about it of those suggestions.
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
I'm almost sure he did, but I can't remember a time, so I wouldn't trust that. My memory may be influenced by fanon.

-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
In descriptions, if you must, but I wouldn't have them use it in dialogue.
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
Depends on the actor. Actually, I think I do it a lot, more so with more famous or talked about actors. Like Brad and Jen.
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?
I won't guess for fear of sounding ignorant, but I really have no idea.
-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
I feel weird about it, particularly if the main reason to friend them is to read their fic, but I would anyway if something came up that I have a strong opinion on. I've often wondered where others stand on this.
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
I don't like doing it, and I think it's a little weird when it's happened to me, but I don't think it's that frowned upon. Most people who are concerned have some sort of "friending policy" in their user info.
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
No. I came on LJ without knowing anyone, and I wouldn't have communicated at all if I hadn't taken that step. Communities are for anyone interested, unless they're explicitly closed communities.
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
I see people asking a lot, but I don't see why it would ever be a problem. The thing I think is weird is when people rec without sending feedback, but apparently a lot of people do that too.
-Is having a paid account really worth it?
I used to think no, but I'm seriously considering getting one. Mainly because I've gotten more into post-relevant icons and it's annoying to keep switching them. I also think it would be fun to customize the look of the lj some, and it's not that expensive, but it's really up to you and what you value.
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)
Yes, and I always feel like when I really want to offer my opinion, I ought to say how I was referred to the post, because I feel weird thinking I look like I just wandered in or have stalker tendencies...
-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
No, unless it's really really long or uses the same conventions I've read a thousand times before. If it feels like it's stuck in just to have smut and not because it's relevant to the plot, then it feels gratuitous, but sometimes it's hard to determine what's relevant.
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
I'm sure, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Sorry!
That I can't explain. Maybe if it's just a little suckage?
Wow, that was actually a lot of questions ;) Do you have your own opinions on any of them, since a lot are opinion-based? I'm curious about what others think about some of those too. Also hoping for recs for Angel-as-sub-partner fics. I may memory this post...

No. I had no idea such pictures existed. Feed me links. NOW! *flails*
Shirtless men holding naked babies is the hottest thing ever. If the man is, you know, hot. I don't know where I got that kink, but there it is.

Yes, there're several things contradicted, Buffy's age being the main one. (How Buffy is Called is another big one). But when I started watching the show, I was confused, because Buffy was already the Slayer, already knew there were vamps, etc etc. It wasn't until much later that I realized there was a movie, and I still haven't decided what elements of the movie I envision carrying over into the world of the show.
No. Hell no. You've seen "She", right? I know that was a phantasy sequence, but wow. He can slow dance though.
Yes, I've seen the spaz dance. I laughed so hard chuckles came out my nose. I asked because I seem to remember him slow dancing on several different occasions. Voluntarily. Sometimes I wonder if the spaz dance was his self-concious projection of...I don't know, what other people might see, if he actually let loose.
No. He's not personally my type, but I can see what's sexy about him. Especially in his voice. That was some voice.
The actor's so much more my type than DB, except DB is of a size that appeals to me more. Keith Szarabajka is old unhandsome, and oddly charismatic imo, which is what I tend to go for. It always surprises me how hot I find DB, because he's so...not what I go for.
I've seen him use a lot in fics, but most of them make me twitchy. He never used any on the show, did he? So I can't really picture any.
The closest he came was "lover" for Buffy when he was Angelus. Most of them make me twitchy too. I'm still trying to figure out whether he'd use any and if so, what he'd use.

-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? *sob*
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy? I don't mind the concept of Kennedy, but the actor made dismal choices. And I weep for the Tara returns plot that Amber Benson foiled by refusing to come back.
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair Apparently it took too much time on set to style. *sob*
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance? Ooh, tricky. I wonder what others will say. DB has phenomenal physical intelligence, and he lends it to Angel. So I'd say yes. Except Angel *does* get self-conscious, and he's way more endearing when he is.
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? I like chest hair! But it's when they start trimming their armpits that I really can't take them seriously anymore.
Names/endearments/appellations
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic? Personally? Bleurgh. But I bet different vamps have different vocab. How about "vamplets"?
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them? No. I tend to use surnames or initials.
Lj etiqu
-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives Depends on the content, I guess, not to mention my free time. I do start commenting *more* as I get to know them.
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking? I think so. I usually tack an, "I like you. Friending now," onto a comment just to be, well, friendly, but not always.
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to? Heck, no.
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking? Sure, who doesn't want to be recced? If they're unlikely to find it themselves, I let them know I've recced them, because who doesn't like to go and look and gloat?
-Is having a paid account really worth it? Not for the dabbly stuff I do. I'm thrifty.
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? Nah, not on fannish matters. I'm not shy. I don't *think* anyone's looked at me funny. How else am I supposed to get to know people and decide if I *want* to friend them?
Smut
-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous? Smut has to be there for a reason. Even in a PWP, I want to learn something about the characters. (But *do* find a way to work that in!)
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)? Wes/Angel probably has some. He'd be sub for Darla. I *love* it when he bottoms, even if it's a temporary respite.
-Wouldn’t it be kinda difficult for a human male to maintain an erection while being bitten and sucked on by a vampire? Snort.
no subject
Do you mean in "Conversations With Dead People"?
Ooh, tricky. I wonder what others will say. DB has phenomenal physical intelligence, and he lends it to Angel. So I'd say yes. Except Angel *does* get self-conscious, and he's way more endearing when he is.
Sometimes I just plain get confused by Angel's "physical intelligence." Sometimes he moves really smoothly, but sometimes he's clumsy. I could understand if the clumsy moments we're only at highly emotional times, but for instance: he trips coming through the window to Cordy's room with Fred in S4, when they need to get her blood to counteract Jasmine. No matter how nervy he's feeling just then, the Angel I know from every other situation would NEVER have made that much noise when being stealthy is so important. The reason I ask the dance question is he seems averse to dancing, and has a fantasy spaz dance in S1, but he slow dances with both Buffy and Darla and seems fine with it.
How about "vamplets"?
You're subversive. I can see it all now. Darla traipsing Europe followed by her train of vamplets arranged in descending size, like ducklings.
Crying tears of blood, here.
Wes/Angel probably has some.
Really! I'm most shocked.

-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
As you have already been linked to the shirtless Daddy!Boreanaz movie photo, I shall just smile at you, and wish that he could have been shirtless holding grown up Connor too.
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
No one I know.
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
Because Angel only fucks blondes.
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
Whedon did the series because he hated how the movie came out.
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
I loved Doyle. But I think the character's death was great for the series.
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
Have you been under a rock, babe?
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
I think he just looks vaguely mentally retarded.
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?
I love and miss chest hair on men. Dave waxes. So does Marsters.
Names/endearments/appellations
-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
Yes. Yes. Yes when soulless and Irish, no.
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
No. No. God, no.
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
Gimme a few days, I'll find you the source.
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
Oh dear. This one again. Can I refer you to the essay on StA by Peasant?
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
No. Hence the trend of using initials.
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?
It's Italian. He's half-Irish.
Lj etiquette
-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
If they let me read it I feel free to comment on it.
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
It's fine to friend people. Less fine to demand they friend you back.
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
Hunh. I am so not shy girl. I plead the fifth.
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
Writers are whores. Rec them.
-Is having a paid account really worth it?
Yes, for the many icons and customized layouts.
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)
Again with the 'I'm a pushy bitca, consult elsewhere', sorry.
Cont.!
-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
If it's not well written. If sex doesn't turn me on *or* serve to further the plot.
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
Yes. Often for Darla, sometimes for Buffy, occasionally for Wes. There's S/A fic where he subs, but I personally find it OOC and don't tend to read, let alone archive that. Check around StA if you're interested in fic where he subs. I also tend to draw a line between bottoming and subbing- Angel would bottom easily, he's a masochist and he thinks he deserves punishment. So he'd let his lover hurt him. I just can't see him calling anyone "Sir" while they did it. Except for Buffy, who I think he would crawl naked over bottlecaps for, and call anything she damn well asked him.
Pain isn't conducive to hard ons in most human males, with the obvious exception of S&M play. I'm sure with conditioning, a human could learn to get off on being bitten. And certainly, Buffy got off on it when Angel bit her in S3. I think this is one of those fanon-canon blurry boundary things, which good writers can carry off, and bad writers tend to over do.
You ask the coolest questions. :}

I'll settle for wishing he held grown up Connor, period. I think he hugged him maybe once. The lack of touching made me antsy.
I think he just looks vaguely mentally retarded.
Since Patrick Stewart could never look even vaguely mentally retarded, that's got to be a no.
He overacts too much for me to get past that. I keep waiting for him to burst into song.
But it'd be a sexy song. Because of the rompworthy voice. It's funny you say that; I thought Keith Szarabajka was excellent. But again, that might be because I found him utterly lickable.
Gimme a few days, I'll find you the source.
Much thanks.
Oh dear. This one again. Can I refer you to the essay on StA by Peasant?
Yes, and again, thanks. I've enjoyed the essays I've read there so far; I either missed this one or just haven't gotten to it yet.
He's half-Irish.
Really? I never would've guessed; he doesn't at all look it. Even if has no contact with anyone actually from Ireland, this makes it harder for me to forgive him for his dismal brogue.

- Kennedy is meh. Don't hate her, but don't like her much either.
General
- No, dislike Corduffy. Lopped off and dyed blonde? Buffied much?
- movie isn't canon, not to Joss at least.
- Erm..no he can't dance he can't sing.
- Don't think about JM much at all..and I was never into ST.
- Dunno, only read B/A :P
- Nope.
- Don't care, whatever they're doing keep it up. Hairyness is gross to me. I'll help David wax his chest aaanyday. But he doesn't seem like a very hairy guy, which is odd for a half Italian, half Czech right?
Names/endearments/appellations
- He'd call Buffy, sweetheart, babe, love AND sex kitten *G* (I'm not a slasher..especially if it involves Spangel *shudder*)
- She'd call Angel, honey so I'm assuming all of the above as well. She'd call Faith "F" LOL. And Spike? She'd call convenient :P
- I don't think he ever called his better half that.
- I hate the terme "childe" it's useless, lame and cliche.
- Nope, I'm a geek, and I fantasize about David being my lovah.
- As stated before, he's half Italian/Half Czech. As far as I know "Boreanaz" is Italian - he had mentioned his unusual Italian name before.
LJ Etiquette
- In my personal experience, only comment if you can. Say they're talking abotu something that you've had a similar experience too. But i'm not to be taken seriously 99.9% of the time so I offer idiotic "advice". Or if the occasion calls, say Happy Birthday! Or good luck. Something generic like that, then you can start getting to know them better.
- I wouldn't say it's impolite too. But for example in my case, if it states in my info to comment if you're friending me, and I'll most probably friend you back, goes to show me you're not all that interested in me if you couldn't even take the time to read my info. I also clearly state that if you're there for my icons, no need for friending because they're posted publicly. I don't friend back unless a) you've commented and/or b)I know you from any of the communities I run, and we have enough in common.
- Depends what the community is for, if in my case, icons in an icon posting community or in
- Well, not sure why you'd rec someone, out of the blue, but sure, it's not impolite.
- That depends what you're using paid for, it's not all that expensive, but for someone into graphics like me, it's worth it, for icons, doing layouts etc. But you don't necessarily need to, you could try it out for 2 months for only 5 dollars.
- Well, I wouldn't comment on their post, because I wouldn't be randomly searching someone's LJ if they aren't on my flist. And of course, iconers, fic writers etc, welcome comments. So yes, I'd feel uncomfortable, I don't do it.
Smut
- Depends on..like the dirty talk or whatever, as I only read B/A fic(smut), I just roll my eyes or if one of them says something completely out of character, and out of context. I mean if the fic is about BDSM etc and it's very dark, you're going to expect something like that. And I think excessively long sex scenes are boring anyway. I don't need to know exactly how long they've done it etc etc. Oh, and excessively being horney and having sex like.. in a broom closet because they haven't had sex in all o f 2 seconds is annoying. Uncontrollable horneyness can get uninteresting.
-Yes, can't pick out exactly what or when, but I've seen it (I hate Buffy being a completely dom, because IMO it's OOC)
- LOL. Erm..I have no idea, what if said male is REALLY turned on by bloodsucking/blood loss? Some men are turned on my very very odd things.

Czech? The ever-expanding nationalities of David Boreanaz. Anyway, many Italians are very unhairy, from what I understand. I don't know about Czechs.
But i'm not to be taken seriously 99.9% of the time so I offer idiotic "advice".
Ha, no, I'm just interested in how other people feel about it. Imo, there should be nothing wrong with commenting on a public post about private stuff, I'm just wired such that it makes me exceedingly uncomfortable doing it. I was just curious whether other people felt that way.
Well, I wouldn't comment on their post, because I wouldn't be randomly searching someone's LJ if they aren't on my flist.
The ways I get into other people's ljs who aren't on my flist is if they're mentioned on the su_herald, metafandom, or some other link-y community like that, or if a friend recs a discussion going on elsewhere. I've come across some very interesting conversations that way, but I do feel rather stalkerly when I do and so am reluctant to comment.
Uncontrollable hornyness can get uninteresting.
Especially because the characters I'm most interested in have vast amounts of self-control.

-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
You've got the links to DB's new movie, so . . .
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
I've never seen anyone anywhere who does.
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
I heard that they cut it to make her look more mature, but I have a theory that she asked her stylist to make her hair as horrible as possible, because I don't know why else they would butcher it that way.
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
Varies. I know I've seen the cramps-as-vamp-detector thing from the movie around, which wasn't used at all in the show. Personally I don't like it, but it won't make me stop reading a fic.
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
I like Doyle, but I wouldn't feel guilty for not liking a character.
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
I think I've only seen him slow dance twice, and one of those was in a dream, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for that. Otherwise? No, not at all.
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
I don't see it, but hey :)
-Are there any Wesley/Virginia fics out there?
I'm sure there are somewhere, but I've never seen them.
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
Not my type, but I can see how other people would like him.
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?
I'm pretty sure Xander has chest hair in any of his shirtless scenes.
Names/endearments/appellations
-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
When he was soulless he called Buffy "lover" and once "my love", but honestly I don't see him as the type to use endearments. For B/A, at any rate, they always said each other's names in a way that would make endearments superflous (okay, that sounds like something out of a really bad romance novel).
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
No idea.
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
I don't think so, but I haven't seen all of the S4 Angelus arc.
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
There's no canon term for that word, so I think it's okay to use in description, but I don't like seeing it in dialogue.
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
No. I like initials. Although I have no problem calling Joss by his first name.
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?
No idea. Italian sounds plausible.
I'm new to lj, and I don't read smut, so I'll let everyone else answer those questions :)

The cramps thing was weird. But the show wasn't very consistent about whether Buffy could sense vamps or not, which made me like the cramps idea more (because it was consistent). In one of the very first eps, Giles tells her she should be able to sense them, and sometimes she seems to, but other times they sneak up on her. Also, Angel surprises her sometimes, but she says in IWRY that she can feel him.
I'm pretty sure Xander has chest hair in any of his shirtless scenes.
He does? I know Wesley does. But is that because they don't want Wesley and Xander to be the sex icons Spike and Angel are?
For B/A, at any rate, they always said each other's names in a way that would make endearments superflous (okay, that sounds like something out of a really bad romance novel).
No you don't. Okay, yes you do, but I've heard several people say that. I personally hate the way DB says "Buffy"; I think he's trying to make the word sound like a caress but it comes out sounding stupid to me. Then again, it's been pointed out to me that it's difficult to make the name "Buffy" sound like someone much longer for and beloved because...well, her name is Buffy.
I don't think so, but I haven't seen all of the S4 Angelus arc.
You should! For a long while I hadn't seen all the eps but I just recently did a long marathon and finally finished. I liked Angelus best in S4. (I didn't catch him saying "soul boy", which made me wonder why people have him say it so much in fics. I thought maybe I missed something). Previously I just plain didn't find Angelus that interesting or appealing--or I did only in terms of what he meant to Angel. But in S4, he was frickin' hot.
There's no canon term for that word, so I think it's okay to use in description, but I don't like seeing it in dialogue.
That's pretty much the way I feel about it. Well, actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Buffy say something like, "Drusilla was Angel's childe," in dialogue; however, Angel saying, "Get a vision, childe" to Drusilla is, imo, lame.
I don't read smut
pity.

General:
- Chest hair. I remember having a little bit of a discussion about this with you on my LJ re: David Duchovny. I do not have a problem with chest hair. It's better than pretty, pretty boys. That is not attractive at all to me. In fact, I applaud male actors such as DD who actually don't become slaves to waxing and preening too much. I mean, it's not like most men have shag piles on their chests anyway. A bit of hair won't hurt.
- Charisma Carpenter's hair. I don't know whether she wanted to cut it short and dye it blonde, but I personally prefer it long and dark brown. Her hair is gorgeous and indeed enviable. Back in 1999/2000 (AtS S1), I wanted my growing-out-of-horrible-concentric-mushroom-style layers hair to be like that.
Shirtless Angel holding baby Connor. It wouldn't have hurt them to fit one of those in, somewhere.
Holtz. No, sorry, I really can't see anything remotely sexy there. More creepy, cringy. But, I applaud your diversity here. Holtz is not typically eye candy material, so I'm all for equal opportunities.
Names etc
- I don't know that I see Angel using too many terms of endearment, especially very soppy ones. This is despite his penchant for Barry Manilow looove music. I think Buffy S2 Angelus used terms such as "my love"; I actually can't remember Angel using any.
- Buffy, on the other hand, is a different matter. She's more informal and just generally has a thing for shortening names and even making names up for things. I don't know that she'd name Spike "daddy", or Faith "precious", but I could see the occasional sprinklings of "hon" or other terms for her SO.
LJ etiquette
- Personal life entries. I don't avoid commenting, but I don't overpush with my comments either if I don't know the person very well. I try to get some form of happy medium if I can.
- Awkward/nervousness. Just a little, yes, although more for personal LJs than communities.
Smut
Epic stories with long sex scenes. I feel like you read my mind. Some smut scenes in such stories almost bore me to tears. And I actually skip them because I'm like, "Okay, he's done her six ways to Sunday already. How many more times can he stick it to her before I claw my own eyes out?!??"
That point is beyond gratuitous in my book.
Okay, I'm done.
Have a good weekend.

Yes, DD partially inspired the question. Do you think actors like DB and JM just chose to do it, or did the network/producers encourage it? I always wondered about that. And what's even weirder is they apparently also wax their arms. I was glad to see in IWRY that DB hadn't waxed his thighs. Yet.
But, I applaud your diversity here. Holtz is not typically eye candy material, so I'm all for equal opportunities.
I think I must think he's hot because he's old and unhandsome, two things which generally attract me (that is, in his 40s old, and unhandsome as in not beautiful, not as in ugly). In fact, I'm continually surprised by how attractive I find DB. Usually I can appreciate a beautiful face like his, but it does nothing for me. Huh. It must be his great body ;o)
Epic stories with long sex scenes. I feel like you read my mind. Some smut scenes in such stories almost bore me to tears.
Actually, I can't recall a long epic story I've read where I got bored by the sex scenes. One reason might be that although "epic" is my favorite style of fic, I've read very few of them all the way through, because very few are able to hold my interest and maintain quality writing all the way through (smut or no). If the fic is good enough to keep me reading, the smut is usually interesting to me.
It's different, however, when the smut is right at the beginning. There is at least one very popular epicky B/A fic I've started about 8 times and never been able to get past the first few chapters of because it's all fluffy smut. I have to be drawn into the story to accept the smut.
Have a good weekend.
Thank you, you too.

General
-Why didn’t we get to see a shirtless Angel holding baby Connor? Was that too much to ask?
Because the world hates me.
-Does anyone at all love Kennedy?
yes,
-Why did they maul Charisma Carpenter’s hair, and did anyone like it short and blonde better than long gorgeous luxurious droolable enviable need-I-go-on brunette?
A couple of reasons. First, the long hair was partly extensions and it was apparently very uncomfortable (if not painful) for Charisma. The network demanded the color change since Fred was brunette. And blonde did fit in nicely with the C/A thing. From all reports, Charisma hated the hair color. It was so unflattering to her skin tone. How they could take one of the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen and make her average at best still mystifies me.
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
I don't consider the movie cannon. I consider the original script that Joss wrote cannon. He modified it slightly and it was printed as a comic book called Origins which was quite well done and explained a lot about Buffy's attitudes. The original script wasmuch darker and it shows in the comic.
-Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
I liked Doyle, I loved Cordy/Doyle but never feel guilt! I hardly ever find Marsters attractive, which might get me lynched in certain circles.
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
Here's my take - he can slow dance because any boob can shuffle their feet. (I read a cute fic where Willow explains to him it's like having sex standing up.) He can do the period dances of his time because Darla tortured him until he could. He has no sense of rhythm though and therefore dances fast like a crazed muskrat in heat, undergoing electro-shock therapy. In other words, he dances like my b-i-l, Paul.
I don't think that being a graeful combatant necessarily transfers itself to the dance floor.
-Does James Marsters-as-William look like a young Captain-Picard-with-hair (or, more accurately: Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius) to anyone besides me?
You've gone insane. :-)
-Are there any Wesley/Virginia fics out there?
There's Angel/Synder fic. Of course there is.
-Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
He's got a fantastic voice, I'll give you that. Did you know hat he does a lot of books on tape? And an incredible amount of voiceover and cartoon work? Lots of people agree with you on the voice thing.
-How come male actors don’t have chest hair any more? Do people really think it’s unsexy? Why? And the point: so does David Boreanaz wax his chest or what?
As Kita said both DB and JM wax. Ouch. In the episode "Angel" you can see that at that point, at least the poor guy didn't have to wax his pits. But check him out in "The Trial". Look ma, no underarm hair! One of the things I loved about the show Once and Again was that Billy Campbell had real live grown-up chet hair. I think hollywood tries to appeal to teen-age girls by making guys more androgynous and therefore, less sexually threatening.

I love it when people are, which is why I ask.
yes, doyle_sb4. She specializes in love for hated characters.
So I'm guessing she loves Dawn, Andrew, and Joyce as well. Actually, Joyce is the only character I just hate. Okay, after Ats S5, I hate Andrew, too. But Kennedy and Dawn I just dislike.
First, the long hair was partly extensions and it was apparently very uncomfortable (if not painful) for Charisma. The network demanded the color change since Fred was brunette.
I wondered whether they dyed it because of Fred. I had no idea CC's hair was extensions. It was so beautiful, and extensions often...aren't.
How they could take one of the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen and make her average at best still mystifies me.
Me too. I only recalled why I used to think she was so drop-dead when she started getting pregnant, because I thought the extra weight she put on made her look really cute. But it was only in "You're Welcome" that I was struck as I was all through S1. She really looked stunning in that ep.
The original script wasmuch darker and it shows in the comic.
I had heard Whedon was unhappy with the movie, so I wondered whether he decided to construct a whole different past for show Buffy (in his head that is) or what. Thanks for the link to the comic; I'll definitely order that some day.
I liked Doyle, I loved Cordy/Doyle but never feel guilt! I hardly ever find Marsters attractive, which might get me lynched in certain circles.
He's the only one I feel guilty about not liking. As for JM, I think he's hot, but only sometimes. However, I feel the same way about DB (ok, to be honest, with DB, I'd have to say a lot or most of the time), which might get me confused looks in certain circles. DB is certainly very good looking, but good looking is not usually what I go for. In fact, it disconcerts me just how attractive I find him.
Here's my take - he can slow dance because any boob can shuffle their feet.
Not true. I trip, seriously. Then again, the opportunities I've had to slow dance? Once. With my brother. So maybe I'd improve.
like a crazed muskrat in heat, undergoing electro-shock therapy.
Thank you for that image. And if your b-i-l Paul can do the Angel spaz dance, you should be so lucky. I've rarely laughed so hard.
There's Angel/Synder fic.
Where? Yes, I like watching train wrecks happen.
Lots of people agree with you on the voice thing.
I looked him and his bedworthiness up on imdb and saw that indeed, he'd done a lot of voice things. Voices usually get to me a lot more than looks do. Which is one of the main reasons I find JM occasionally hot; he has a good voice. DB has the unfortunate tendency of having a voice that reminds me of my brother's--who has a very nice voice, btw. It's just weird.
But check him out in "The Trial". Look ma, no underarm hair!
I did notice that. In fact, that was when I first seriously started wondering about chest hair. I had trouble being distracted by it then, though, because of the beautiful back. Seriously one of my favorite shots from the show ever.
One of the things I loved about the show Once and Again was that Billy Campbell had real live grown-up chet hair. I think hollywood tries to appeal to teen-age girls by making guys more androgynous and therefore, less sexually threatening.
I've never seen that show. Then again, I haven't seen most shows. I think you're right about the teen girl thing, but I just don't get. When I was a teenager (okay so it was only a couple years ago) I still liked men with chest hair. Then again I was always the odd duck with a thing for much older men, so I guess it was an anomaly.
Questions Yay!
-Do most fics consider the movie canon? Does Whedon consider it canon for the show?
-Can Angel (the character, not David Boreanaz) dance?
I consider the movie sort of canon. It'd have to be modified a bit to fit in with the series, but IMHO, I'd prefer to take what from it could be taken. It would have been really funny if BtVS had ended with a cut scene to Paul Reubens character still in the process of dying...
As to Angel. He can slow dance. He can adequately perform period dances, because that would have been required of him to pass as a gentleman. There are no dances less then 100 years old that he can competently perform. As opposed to Spike, who has never, in any era, ever been able to dance in any way.
Names/endearments/appellations
Angelus uses nicknames, mostly to piss people off. Using "-boy" as an insult suffix is a Joss Whedon thing, and every character does it in episodes Joss himself writes, and almost no one ever does in episodes other characters write. I don't really see Angel as much of a nick-name pet-name type of person. He's oddly proper/formal/polite that way.
Buffy, I think would use "honey" and things of that sort, but I don't think she goes for all that cutesy. She doesn't call boyfriends "daddy" and I hate fics where the BF is always calling her "baby", and she is cool with that. Maybe Angelus and VampBuffy. Pretty much nowhere else does it work for me.
The Childe thing annoys me. Won't wreck a fic, but I prefer stories to be more about interpersonal dynamics and the people than Magical Blood Bonds... My tastes...

Re: Questions Yay!
Months from now, I will be sitting somewhere, think of BtVS, and suddenly remember this idea. And will be snorting guffaw after chortle even then.
As opposed to Spike, who has never, in any era, ever been able to dance in any way.
Really? I always imagined Spike as being able to dance. I'm hoping neither he nor Angel ever tried disco.
Using "-boy" as an insult suffix is a Joss Whedon thing, and every character does it in episodes Joss himself writes, and almost no one ever does in episodes other characters write.
Interesting observation; I never noticed. I do remember Angel calling Riley "boy" in "The Yoko Factor" (I think). I rather liked that.
She doesn't call boyfriends "daddy" and I hate fics where the BF is always calling her "baby", and she is cool with that.
No, I can't imagine her using "daddy" either. "Baby" is a little different; I've seen it enough in fics that now it pretty much makes me ill. However, "baby" is such a common endearment, now practically stripped of the connotation of "weaker thing", that I'm not sure I can see Buffy getting offended by it.
If I post something, feel free to reply to it. If it's public, then I don't mind the comments.
Rationally, I expect that to be true for all people. But I'm shy, and logic doesn't help much when I can't get rid of the nervous feeling when replying to someone's personal posts.

Names/endearments/appellations
-What names/endearments can you actually see Angel using? (Would he call Buffy “sweetheart”? Would he call Cordy “my love”? Would he call Spike “lad”? Would he call Wesley “sex kitten”? et al)
Considering that Angel doesn't even use a cutsie name for his own kid, I'd say he's not big on the gush. In the heat of the moment, I like the Gaelic thing, but many people hate it. Without a soul, a big yes to the "lad" thing. hee.
-What about Buffy? (I know she calls Angel “honey” in an episode. Would she ever call him “hon”? Would she ever call Faith “precious”? Would she ever call Spike “daddy”?)
Buffy also is not big on the cutsie-talk, that's a Willow deal. Maybe I could see a "hon". And if she ever calls Spike "daddy", don't tell me because I'll have to slit my wrists.
-Did Angelus ever once refer to his souled self as “soul boy”? (I know others did.)
I did a google site search on "Buffyworld" and according to that - nope. Faith calls him that in "Five by Five". And a random demon says it to Angelus. That's it. Completely fanon.
-What’re your views on using the term “childe” in a fic?
Anybody using it to talk about someone - ie. Hi! Spike's my child and I'm his sire - maybe. Calling someone - come here, childe - no way, no how.
-Am I the only one who’s uncomfortable calling actors by their first names when talking about them?
Nope. I usually go with intitals or last name. I'll sometimes go with the first if I'm crying over DB's lack of fashion sense. (Which reminds me - you must join the LJ community david-b-daily. So many lickable photos, so little time.)
-What kinda name is Boreanaz?
As many have mentioned, he's partly Italian. You've never seen the pics of him in his "Italian Stallion" t-shirt? (And, I couldn't agree more with the sentiment.)
Lj etiquette
-If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
It depends. If I have something useful to say, I'll go for it. I give great advice. **grin**
-Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
I don't.
-Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
I always join first, then watch out.
-Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
I don't ask, but I can't imagine anyone minding. I know I'm always thrilled.
-Is having a paid account really worth it?
It is if you like to do polls and have lots of icons. Since I'm a one icon girl, I don't bother.
-Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)
It depends on what the discussion is about. Fannish concerns, I would comment. But some people are nut jobs and I would never comment in their LJs. I don't need the grief.
Smut
-You’re reading an epicky fic with an interesting plot. Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
If it's there to show me something about the characters, then no. If it's in their because the writer feels a need to shoe-horn in smut, then yes. Very few people can write decent sex.
-Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
You mean a true sub relationship? I don't think with men - he's way too alpha. But women, a whole different deal. Darla, Cordelia, Buffy - I could see them ordering him around while he wears a little slave collar. He likes bossy women, let's face it. And fic where Angel is sub to Spike is laughable in my book.
What gives? Or doesn't give?
suspension of disbelief! Suspension of disbelief! A good writer can take me almost anyplace. Bad writers, not so much.
Well, that was bracing.
no subject
Do people use this? I haven't seen it. I would've thought you'd hate it, since you're so averse to "lass" ;o)
And if she ever calls Spike "daddy", don't tell me because I'll have to slit my wrists.
Okay, I won't tell you. I'm not sure I can imagine any Jossverse female except Drusilla using that term.
Anybody using it to talk about someone - ie. Hi! Spike's my child and I'm his sire - maybe. Calling someone - come here, childe - no way, no how.
That's exactly how I feel about it.
(Which reminds me - you must join the LJ community david-b-daily. So many lickable photos, so little time.)
I've been over there a couple times; I was looking for a photo and now I can't remember why. My main question is: Would I have gotten to see shirtless DB holding a baby sooner if I were a member of that community? ;o)
You've never seen the pics of him in his "Italian Stallion" t-shirt? (And, I couldn't agree more with the sentiment.)
Nope. I would've thought it'd be dangerous for a man like that to be walking around in a t-shirt like that. So many people looking for a ride.
I don't think with men - he's way too alpha.
I would've thought so, but some people have mentioned he subs for Wes. What?!?
But women, a whole different deal. Darla, Cordelia, Buffy - I could see them ordering him around while he wears a little slave collar.
Part of the reason I ask is it's surprising to me how dominant Angel is in a lot of B/A fics, even when there's not an explicit D/s relationship There are certainly situations in which I could see him being dominant with a woman and even with Buffy, but I think there would have to be specific reasons behind it. Otherwise, I would think he'd love the chance to lie back and let her explore what she wants to do with him. I do think that if they had been able to continue intimacy after 'Surprise', he would've taken a guiding hand, but just because he knows more about it than she does.
And fic where Angel is sub to Spike is laughable in my book.
Kita mentioned that there was a fic or two in which he does. I'm having trouble envisioning it, seems pretty out of character to me.
Well, that was bracing.
Indeed.

Does anyone besides me feel guilty for not liking Doyle all that much?
I didn't care for Doyle, and I don't feel one bit guilty about it. You like what you like.
Is it wrong to think Holtz is dead sexy (especially his voice)? Am I alone in this feeling?
You are SO not alone in this. Szarabajka has done audio books, and if I had any extra cash, I'd buy them just so I could listen to his voice all day.
Would he call Spike “lad”?
Maybe back in the day. He did call Spike "boy" in "Innocence" and "Becoming, Part 1," and I choose to believe that he still uses it during sex. ;)
If you’ve just friended someone new you met on lj, do you comment when they post about their personal lives, or does that feel invasive to you before you get to know them better?
I rarely even *read* stuff about people's personal lives, unless I've known them for a while. I'm mainly here for the fic.
Is it polite to friend someone without asking?
I friended you. *g*
Is anyone else nervous posting to a community without being invited to?
No. Communities are for pimping and sharing. Knock yourself out.
Is it polite to rec someone without asking?
Hell, yeah! Writers love to be recced, and a surprise rec is even better. Go nuts!
Is having a paid account really worth it?
Only if you want more than 3 icons.
Do you feel awkward weighing in with your opinion on the lj of someone you haven’t friended or don’t know that well? (not in reference to fic; everyone knows writers like comments from whomever they can get them ;o)
No. The internet is a public space. If someone posts something in a public space, they should expect to get answers from the public.
Does a really long sex scene right in the middle bore you? At what point, really, does gratuitous smut become gratuitous?
When it's no longer hot. *g*
Has Angel ever been the sub partner in a D/s relationship (in fic, I mean)?
Lots of fic, but very few good ones. I'm kinda with Kita on this one: I can see him subbing for Buffy and Darla, but not many others. Maybe Connor. *g* Personally, I don't like fics where Buffy is a sub for Angel. She's the slayer; she's even more of a control freak than Angel is; and she's stronger than him, physically *and* emotionally. In my head, the only reason Buffy would sub for Angel is because she wants to lay down the burden of being a general, not because she's a lovesick puppy desperate to please him. I think she's past that, now.
no subject
Well, I've been saving up for Alan Rickman's audio books. But I'm afraid Szarabajka might even take precedence.
He did call Spike "boy" in "Innocence" and "Becoming, Part 1," and I choose to believe that he still uses it during sex. ;)
I ascribe to your school of belief. Interestingly,
I friended you. *g*
Thank you and right back at ya.
Only if you want more than 3 icons.
That answers that question (with a resounding no).
I can see him subbing for Buffy and Darla, but not many others. Maybe Connor. *g*
Connor? I could see that, too.
Personally, I don't like fics where Buffy is a sub for Angel. She's the slayer; she's even more of a control freak than Angel is; and she's stronger than him, physically *and* emotionally.
I'm not sure I would say she's stronger emotionally. Definitely not weaker, but I'd say they were pretty equal in that sense. But yes, Buffy as a sub doesn't work for me, even if the fic isn't explicitly D/s. As you say, I can see her subbing as a kind of respite, but the number of fics I've seen wherein Buffy is weak and needy disturbs me.
Thanks for your answers.

-I do get nervous about posting to a community without being invited to do it. In fact, I don't think I've ever posted to the communities I'm a part of. I only would if I thought I had something to contribute.
-I rec people without asking. I think writers are flattered by it.
-I have never had a paid account, so I don't really know. I'm happy with my Plus Account though. =)
-I think that I would feel awkward replying on the LJ of someone I haven't friended. Also, if I don't know someone that well on LJ, I like to read more of their blog before I comment. But I feel like I can get to know people pretty quickly in LJ... or at least know if I like them or not. =)
