I want someone explain comic books to me. I was really into X-men comics in preteen years, but one of the reasons I kind of dropped it was because I got confused (also, I got too tall to be comfortable sexing up with Wolverine and realized I would never have boobs like Rogue's. When you're 11, you still want boobs like Rogue's, even though you figure out by 12 NO ONE has boobs like Rogue's. Or even wants boobs like Rogue's, because ugh, back pain). There seemed to be so many different series all going on at once; I couldn't keep them straight. I didn't get the difference between Uncanny, Astonishing, and Amazing. Isn't there like . . . a diagram for these things?

Swinging by, so I'm going to answer a few of the first set of questions. Might come back later to answer from the other sets.

How do you use tags? No, this one's not you personally. I really don't get how to use them or what they're for.
One answer -- tags work in much the same way as memories, though they offer more immediacy. Say for example you might have a memory category that's titled icons. So first you click to get to your memories. Then you click that category, icons. At that point you see a list of links, entries you've classified under that category. To get to each entry, you then click on one of the links you see.

Tags give you those same entries (once you have gone through and manually tagged them with a shared tag), but in the format of your journal page, cut-tags in place.

I usually add fic to both -- add to memories, and tag with some designator that will let me find the fic or multi-part fic by that category. But other types of RL-themed things, or minor fandom issues/posts, or entries that are updates about what I'm writing now -- those seem less formal to me, and so I tag only. One disadvantage -- tags only bring up the last 100 entries with that category.

Why do you have yourself friended?
So I can use my own entries on my reading-list as a marker. That way I can tell where I left off (I often end up posting after I've caught up on my flist) or round-about where I stopped reading (if, say, I know it was about five or six entries after my last post). And hey, for now when LJ isn't delivering all comments, it can be helpful to see your lonely entry that you thought no one replied to on your friends/reading list, and realize that it has ten responses by now. :)

Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal?
Depends on the entry. In a fic post, I wouldn't do that, because it seems so OT to the point of the post. But in a post about other issues or a RL post, I probably would if I get the sense that the original poster welcomes such a thing. It's usually fairly clear whether she or he does or not.

Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you?
Well, if someone posts one correction but that error has a big effect (like, hey, you forgot to put an LJ cut for your 2,000 word entry) then it's fine, and I'm grateful for the comment. When someone replies to a fic post with only a correction and no other comment, I find that annoying, and I'd probably wonder what's up that spurred them to choose to make that comment and say nothing else. But if there's a one or two word comment that's positive to any type of entry, that's totally fine with me.

You're such a nosy person, aren't you? LOL!

How often do you change your bio? - I don't. What's there is what i put up when i signed up..and in truth, I never even look at it.
How do you use tags? No, this one's not you personally. I really don't get how to use them or what they're for. - I dont' use tags. Like you, I dont' know why they are there, or what they are for. Besides, I'm lazy.
How do you get to your journal—is it in your favorites? Is the link there your “recent entries” page, your user page, or your “my lj” page, or what? - You know the little drop down menu in hte address bar? That's where it is. Too lazy to keep typing it in, and I've never even thought of 'bookmarking' it. Heh.
Why do you have yourself friended? - I don't. Although I should, because I am my best friend. Heh.
Do you ever have trouble finding the button to click to add someone’s post to your memories? - No, cos I don't memory posts. But I often forget how to post to communities...
How often do you check your flist to see if someone’s added you? - Er, I keep forgetting. And besides, I'm so boring and dull I dont' think anyone's friended me lately unless I've friended them.
Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal? - Sometimes i do. Well, not so much impolite. I get the guilts tho, if I suddenly realize I'm replying to comments from someone who commented on the original post, and it goes on and on and on. Cos the original poster will be getting all these emails in her email box, and seeing 1000 comments on her post and get all excited thinking people are talking to her, and it turns out it's just me and some other person.
Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you? - grammatical errors yes, especially if i don't know them. I mean, who do they think they are, the grammatical police? Unless of course I've posted some fic and they are correcting it. And one word comments dont' bother me, cos there are times when I want to respond to someone's post and have no idea what to say other than to agree with waht they said, or express sorrow if htey are having a hard time.
How do you spell the gerund form of rec and beta? - *blinks*

[identity profile] mzzgoddessblue.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any fics out there about Anne (formerly Lily, formerly Chantarelle)? - hope not. wait. buffy used the name 'anne' when she ran away - did chantarelle use it too???

Did anyone besides me really love Kate Lockley? - Big fat no.

Whatever happened to the Ripper spin off? - dont know, but i really wish it was back on. i keep thinking of the show "She Wolf of London" ( a show that quite possibly I'm the only person in the world who remembers it) when I think of Ripper. It would have been fantastic.

Is there even the remote possibility of a Faith spin-off? - Nope. She's off doing other things. What those things are, I have no idea. Although there is still talk of the Spike movie.

Is there even the remote possibility of the cartoon? - Hope not. unless they do the graphics like Final Fantasy...

Long response... ::: deep breath :::

I want someone explain comic books to me. When you're 11, you still want boobs like Rogue's, even though you figure out by 12 NO ONE has boobs like Rogue's. Or even wants boobs like Rogue's, because ugh, back pain). Isn't there like . . . a diagram for these things?

Okay... time to channel the inner geek in me... X-Men got so popular that several writers and artists wanted to work on the book. Since there were hundreds of possible mutant characters already created, plus the new ones being created, left plenty of room for several titles. Astonishing (by Joss. Excellent read) was about the core group at the mansion. Uncanny currently was Storm and her crew off in the world. The only constant is that Wolverine stars in almost all of them. The only title that stands alone is Ultimate X-Men, which lives in its own universe.

Each time a new writer picks up the book, they change the direction. They stopped wearing costumes, they're back in costumes, they're dying, they're alive. All of it constantly changes.

In my opinion, the real reason for all of the titles is they often run a single storyline through ALL of the titles, so if you start with Uncanny, you then have to move to New to read the next part, which then goes to Astonishing, then back to the original title. Otherwise, you're missing the larger story.

If you wanna start reading again, now might be the best time. A major storyline just finished where the Scarlet Witch, daughter of Magneto, altered reality and caused 99% of the mutants on Earth to become human. All of the titels are about to change again, with some even being canceled, like Astonishing (no where to go since Joss isn't writing it anymore), and a new storyline is about to begin through all of the books.

I guess I could draw a diagram for you if you want.

How often do you change your bio? Um... I've changed it once? I would change it again if I had any creative ideas.

How do you use tags? I think they're really good for finding all posts of a certain type that you're not bothered about putting in memories. Or, you know how you sometimes get "Error: memories temporarily unavailable"? Some people use tags as an alternative for those times.

How do you get to your journal? I have the LJ login page in my faves.

Why do you have yourself friended? I don't, and I've often wondered this about other people as well. It's off-putting enough when I see posts I've made in communities on my friends page.

Do you ever have trouble finding the button to click to add someone’s post to your memories? Hee! Yes. Some people's layouts are confusing! But I recently wiped out my memories and am now saving most links elsewhere, so I don't really worry about that anymore.

Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal? I think it is in a way and I tend to apologize to the journal owner when I do, but sometimes it just happens and you can't really help it. LJ isn't the easiest setting to just go "hey, let's take this elsewhere"

Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you? Nope.

I have no clue about most of those fandom questions, but...
Am I the only slathering B/A fangirl who doesn’t think much of the episode IWRY? !!! Wha? How? Yes!

Are there any fics out there about Anne (formerly Lily, formerly Chantarelle)? Oh, there totally are. Ooh, I know I've read a couple. There's definitely some Gunn/Anne out there. I don't know if I have any bookmarked... I'll see.

Did anyone besides me really love Kate Lockley? Not rabid fangirl love, but no, I thought she was awesome. You know, once I grew up a bit and rewatched and got over the whole "OMG she's trying to take Angel from Buffy!" indignation thing. Hey, I was like 15.

*skips Joss Whedon section because I'm tired and clueless and hey, look, if I stick around five more minutes I'll be late for class...* :(

How often do you change your bio?

Nah, because it's currently perfect.

How do you use tags? No, this one's not you personally. I really don't get how to use them or what they're for.

I use them because I tend to use them to categorize things more finely than memories. For example, instead of just fics, I have long fic, drabbles, etc.

How do you get to your journal—is it in your favorites? Is the link there your “recent entries” page, your user page, or your “my lj” page, or what?

when I type "li" is the address bar, the entire thing gets pouplated.

Why do you have yourself friended?

I don't thnk so. Maybe I should so I know what I'm up to.

Do you ever have trouble finding the button to click to add someone’s post to your memories?

I don't normally add other other people's posts to my memories. Half the time I can't find the damn comment button however.

How often do you check your flist to see if someone’s added you?

Once a week or so. Or if I'm at "user info" I'll check.

Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal?

nah. I don't normally, but I have on occassion.

Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you?

I'm mellow, it's all good. Just don't be rude.

How do you spell the gerund form of rec and beta?

You've been smoking crack again, haven't you.

General fandom

What did they use to put the tattoo on David Boreanaz’s back? Do you think they worried about getting it in the same place every time? And who gets the job of applying it, anyway?

They didn't put it on in the same place evry time. Compare back shots - it moves sometimes. And I don't know who gets to put it on, but why wasn't it me?

Did David Boreanaz ever have a back double?

Don't think so. I hope not. If yes, I'd like to meet the owner.

How tall is Nicholas Brendon? Okay now, how tall is he for real?

I'd say 5'10" - 5'11". He's quite a sloucher, so hard to say. Shorter then DB.

Am I the only slathering B/A fangirl who doesn’t think much of the episode IWRY?

Why didn't you like it? It's the only episdoe of AtS that ever made me cry. I like it because once again, Angel is played by TPTB. (Well, other reasons too.)

Are there any fics out there about Anne (formerly Lily, formerly Chantarelle)?

I'm sure there are.

Did anyone besides me really love Kate Lockley?

I didn't hate her. I've read some good Kate fics.

What DVD commentary do you like the best?

Joss, every time. Insightful, funny, informative. Greenie is the worst - he has a scary CC fixation.

What’s J. Augest Richards doing these days? Alexis Denisof?

Alexis is currently chained nude in my basement. J. August is popping by later to peel me some grapes and feed then to me, slowly one at a time.

more later.

Joss Whedon

Why do some people hate Joss Whedon?

Because he had the nerve to tell the story he wanted. Because B/A didn't ride off into the sunset at the send. Because B/S was completely dysfunctional nad bad for both of them. Because there was too much Spike. Because there wasn't enough Spike. Because.

Whatever happened to the Ripper spin off?

not sure.

Is there even the remote possibility of a Faith spin-off?

I think it's dependent on her. If she wanted to do it, I'll bet it would get done.

Is there even the remote possibility of the cartoon?

Maybe. Every once in a while, a rumor crops up. I'd be happy if they would just publish the completed scripts.

Did Serenity make enough money, or not?

I doubt it. It will turn a profit but probably not a big enough profit.

Isn't there like . . . a diagram for these things?

I don't read X-men, but it's pretty much the same in evry comic fandom. They run multiple books so they can appeal to different people (or force people to buy a billion books.) if you read Batman, there's Batman, Tales of the Dark Night, Detective (commonly known as 'tec) and Gotham Knights. Also all his sidekicks have their own books and none of the continuity seems to match up.

How often do you change your bio?
Just last week, I retired the quote I'd had there since the beginning. But I wonder if I should put something more explanatory there. I may, and then I'll leave it.

How do you get to your journal—is it in your favorites? Is the link there your “recent entries” page, your user page, or your “my lj” page, or what?
I've got "recent entries" as a button on my Mozilla toolbar. I upload with a client. Actually, I'm using a client for this reply, so I don't have to format all the bold tags by hand.

How often do you check your flist to see if someone’s added you?
Eh...every couple weeks? More after I've added someone, because I wonder if they'll add me back.

Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal?
Nah. I don't receive comments via email, so it doesn't usually occur to me that it might be a hassle.

Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you?
Nah. I'm easy-going, and I think one must be to enjoy online fandom.

How do you spell the gerund form of rec and beta?
betaing...beta-ing...reccing...I dunno.

Are there any fics out there about Anne (formerly Lily, formerly Chantarelle)?
Yes, [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat just finished a Wes-Anne-Xander thiller called (rummages) Keeper of the Book. She's also got a Xander/Anne somewhere in her Memories. They're both very good.

Whatever happened to the Ripper spin off?
Noises are being made about straight-to-DVD films. I'll believe it when I see it.

How often do you change your bio?

I change my bio whenever the fancy strikes me, which usually means that I or someone I know said something in conversation that I found to be exceedingly witty. Like, for instance, right now my journal's name is "ohio my ass". Isn't that exceedingly witty?

How do you use tags? No, this one's not you personally. I really don't get how to use them or what they're for.

I would like it everyone used cut tags for anything that's graphically heavy or has a good length of text involved.

How do you get to your journal—is it in your favorites? Is the link there your “recent entries” page, your user page, or your “my lj” page, or what?

My journal (that is, my most recent entries) is my home page. I rarely turn my computer off, though, so at least one version of my journal is sitting on a tab someplace, and then I have that extension in Firefox where all of your old tabs automatically start back up when you fire up your computer again. This is what is called, "aiding your addiction."

Why do you have yourself friended?

I have myself friended for various reasons. One, so that I can see my own entries on my flist. This way if I recently posted something, I can check and see if there are (more) replies. This is especially handy during these troubled times when LJ won't send any comment notifications. Two, so that I can view my own filtered or locked posts. If I didn't have myself friended, I couldn't add myself to my filters. And that would be sad.

Do you ever have trouble finding the button to click to add someone’s post to your memories?

All the times. Depending on a person's journal layout, the location and even the design of the memories button seems to change. I just altered my journal layout and am just realizing that there's a link for "remember," which I assume is a memories function. But who knows?

How often do you check your flist to see if someone’s added you?

Once in a blue moon. Strangely enough, someone *else* seems to go and check that "fan of" list which tells you who friended and who defriended you on what date. Almost daily, too. I don't know who would be interested enough to do that or why, but there you have it.

Do you feel it’s impolite to have long conversations with someone on someone else’s journal?

Nope.

Do you get annoyed when someone makes a comment just to correct a grammatical error, or makes a comment that’s only one word, or seems pointless to you?

Like most anything, it totally depends on the person. Someone that I love can come in and comment with, "poo," and I'll still love it. (And they have, believe you me.) Someone who's been grating on my nerves can come in and comment in a really informative, well thought out manner and I might still get irritated.

How do you spell the gerund form of rec and beta?

I, personally, spell them, "reccing" and "beta-ing."

What did they use to put the tattoo on David Boreanaz’s back? Do you think they worried about getting it in the same place every time? And who gets the job of applying it, anyway?

I don't know for certain, but I assume that they would have made a template of it and printed out a tattoo-sticker every time they needed on and then licked the giant sticker and then pasted on to David's back. That makes the most sense to me.

They seem to have done a pretty (http://pics.livejournal.com/ros_fod/pic/0000d1qx) good (http://pics.livejournal.com/ros_fod/pic/0000c557) job of applying it in the same general area, but the throaty, cold-ridden voice behind me is telling me that I'm just fooling myself.

Did David Boreanaz ever have a back double?

Kita, who knows All About David, says no. But that he did have a stunt double. And that the stunt double's name was Mike Massa. And that Mike is much skinnier than Dave.

How tall is Nicholas Brendon? Okay now, how tall is he for real?

Considering that David is about 6' 1" (I stood in front of him and gauged with my own eyes), I would say that Nick Brendon is 5' 11".

Am I the only slathering B/A fangirl who doesn’t think much of the episode IWRY?

Kita says that you are. I say, "Go you."

Oh, *tags*. Not cut-tags. This is why I should actually pay attention to other people's answers.

I use tags for two reasons. First, I want to easily find a category of stuff, like, say, all of the times I've ranted about something political. Or whatever navel-gazing thing I'm finding worthy of my time. Maybe all the times that I said something schmoopy about my girlfriend. Whatever it is, and I want all those entries to come up so that I can scroll through them and look for something in particular, rather than have to click on a link that takes me to individual entries, as happens with the memories function.

Second, I want other people to be able to find certain entries easily as well, and have it all come up at once. The memories function is limited in terms of how you can define an entry, so sometimes it's better for someone to be able to look at the entries themselves. You might not know that you wanted to read a sugary-schmoopy RPS fic about James Marsters and Vincent Kartheiser, but now that the entry's sitting right in front of you amongst all of my other fics, maybe you'll give it a try.

LJ

I do feel that it's somewhat impolite to have an extended, off-topic, conversation in someone else's LJ - especially if the host isn't involved. One could probably move that to private email or one's own LJ... That said, I'm something of an impolite man, and I violate this bit of etiquette with some regularity.

GF

I'm not a slathering fangirl, but I'm also not huge on IWRY. It has a few good scenes, and some decent concepts. But not much follow through, considering it should be a big deal. And the sadness that basically - it's the happiest most content moment of Buffy's life and she doesn't remember it. There are some positive things, in retrospect as series' progressed. But at base, Morah is lame, and the Oracles suck and they should never have been introduced. Generally, presence of the Oracles in a fic is a sign of badness ensuing...

JW

I don't hate Whedon, but I do find him disappointing for his tendency to bite off bigger chunks of story than he could chew and for how he delegated story. Exhibit A being BtVS-7 which really failed to deliver on what was a decent concept. Because I work for the Navy, and when the boat sinks you blame the captain. And S7 was Joss' ship, and it sank. Hard.

Also, I liked the Kate character, and I think characters like Kate and Riley are important because they represented real human social organizations and showed why they were important for society. Unfortunately, Elizabeth Rohm isn't a particularly compelling actress and the character suffers because of that.

Just jumping in to say that there's a great essay (http://www.octavesoftheheart.com/octaves/markey.htm) by a B/A shipper on why she doesn't like IWRY (among other things from AtS S1) over at Octaves.

Yeah, I don't think I'm the one to ask about LJ, since I still don't really understand tags or memories... although I've finally figured out how to add something to my memories, so that's good.
I haven't friended myself... I think that would be sort of odd. And the only way that I notice if someone has friended me is when I see that I have a new message in my LJ inbox.
Oh, and about comments- I think I would be happy with any comments. =) Sometimes I do leave sort of random comments to people's blogs. I do try and only comment when I have something to say... but sometimes my fangirlishness gets away with me. =P =)
