Hee! The poll is so much fun! I especially agree on "Xander *isn't* an innocent unloved boy who is ready to be corrupted by Spike's jaded cynicism fucking that warm untouched white arse in search of freshness and hope and home. Besides, arse isn't ever fresh, and there might be coming but it ain't home," being the thing that doesn't make Spander work. Grrr, I hate that plotline!
I ashamed to say that I used to write like that before, but in my defense I used to read Spander before watching the show. I still love the ship, I think Xander and Spike has a lot in common, love many fanfics about them, but I know some of them are awful.
And this made me laugh out loud:
"there are too many fics in which Angel is a great big brawny man and Spike is a blood-crying girl."
I don't read Spangel but blood-crying girl Spike appears in Spander sometimes, in the fics where Xander is the great big browny man. *g*
It was weird, when I tried to find out what was so great about S/X, just how many fics I ran across with that plot line. The thing is, it's not necessarily a bad plot, and some of the fics were quite entertaining--it's just not Spike, and *especially* not Xander.
Yeah, I think the first fic that started that rain of fics was Waiting Here by Alexandria, I guess it's the first one with the plot "Xander being raped by his father, his frinds don't notice, Spike does and falls in love with Xander when rescusing him" after that MANY rapist Tony Harris fics appeared, and I remember some writers who have Buffy and Willow as the big bads, or Scoobies bashing, while Xander is the poor woobie abused by his friends, waiting for super nice Spike to rescue him. Meh.
I hate character bashing so much. And I hate woobie characters even more. Usually Spike is your typical woobie who's wronged by the Scoobies, Angel, Dru and everybody in the planet until a Mary Sue comes out to tell everybody off and tell them how much of a saint is Spike. Another meh.
