Short B/A centric fic is currently kicking my ass, so I find solace in TV.

I recently watched season 1-3 of "24". A friend of mine who got me started in on AtS said it was a good show and brought me S1. I currently hate him for wasting my life. Also,

a2zmom mentioned a) you could drive a truck through the plot holes, and b) nothing has any consequences, and c) it's still fun. She was right on all 3 counts.

Since I wasted 72 hours or something of my life watching it, I thought I'd share my opinions. Thus follows the good and the bad and the ugly of season 1-3.

Season 1

Downside: Plot holes. The last 12 hours. Kim Baur. Amnesia. Nina Myers being evil. Tony Almeida’s lower lip.
Cool bits: The first twelve hours were some really good tv watchin’.
Hotness: I can’t decide whether to marry David Palmer or Jack Bauer. Which is worse: getting kidnapped and raped, or having to be the First Lady? (ick).
Girlpower: None.
Buffy?: Omg, it’s the Slayer Spike killed! Omg, it’s the policewoman Jack got killed!
Questions: Does Jack Bauer only sleep with stick women, or what?

Season 2

Downside: Plot holes. Kim Bauer running from the police. Kim Bauer running into a cougar. Kim Bauer running (bounce bounce bounce). Kim Bauer anything.
Cool bits: When Jack Bauer was going to fly the plane to dispose of the nuke, because I get turned on by guys who can’t wait to be martyrs. When Jack Bauer told his daughter to shoot the bad guy, then told her to do it again. When Jack Bauer beat up on Sherry Palmer. When Jack Bauer anything. The whole plot arc about trying to prevent the war was kinda awesome.
Hotness: I want David Palmer to be my President. I want that create-a-voice-saying-what-you-want program so I can pretend to have phone sex with Jack. Keifer got nekkid omg. Tony Almeida shaved his lip. Go him!
Girlpower: Michelle Dessler has no personality. The actress who plays Kate Warner cannot act. Kim Bauer . . . let’s not go there. Only Lynne was cool, and she got taken out halfway through. This peeves me.
Buffy?: Tina! Of course you’re going to die. Gavin! How come you’re never interesting? Quentin Travers! Of course you’re evil.
Questions: Was I the only one who had trouble figuring out the positions and ranks of President Palmer’s little stooges? What’s “Division”?
Best Quote Ever: “I’m gonna need a hacksaw.”

Season 3

Downside: Massive plot holes and loose ends. Anything to do with Wayne and Sherry Palmer, Julia and Alan Milliken, and Senator Keeler, but most of all the way they made President Palmer, who was a character I admired and loved, into someone I didn’t like, didn’t respect, and didn’t care a fig for. Also, Jack Bauer not being tortured and not getting naked.
Cool bits: Everyone annoying from S2 getting killed. Jack Bauer shooting Chase Edmunds. Jack Bauer shooting Ryan Chapelle. Jack Bauer shooting Nina Myers. Jack Bauer shooting up (only because Sutherland was so good at the shame and hatred of himself. Have I mentioned that turns me on?)
Hotness: Keifer Sutherland’s voice makes me feel the need to change into fresh undergarmets. The Tony/Michelle stuff was very well done.
Girlpower: They finally got this right! I take back everything I ever said about Michelle Dessler. I think her monumental self-control made her seem a little wooden before, but it’s what made me fall so in love with her now. Her kick assness makes up for a lot of suck S3. Also, Kim Bauer is almost cool. But Chloe O’Brian drives me fucking nuts.
Buffy?: Jasmine/Principal Wood—craziness! Gavin, you’re back and you’re still not interesting. David Nabbit, you will always be a tech guy. Virginia, you’re a hussy.
Questions: Why didn’t they just kill off President Palmer, instead of making him less than he is? What was the significance of Jack Bauer’s Mother Mary tat? Do I need to get more Buffy writers in to show the 24 writers how to get the hottie shirtless every ep?

Which is just my way of saying it was fun, not as good as anything touched by Joss Whedon, and omg I never knew Keifer was so hot.

I just don't find Keifer hot. For one thing, he's so damned short (says the height challenged girl).

You really could just watch the last four episodes of each season and not miss anything. Seriously.

I wish I had it to send! It's for the IWRY marathon. I knew it would kill me. When I'm just writing for fun I write whatever. When I'm writing with any kind of goal in mind, I get a serious complex about whether my idea is "good enough" and I get all discouraged. Which I hate, because the exact reason I write fanfic is to dispell all that kind of stress. Omg I'm such a pathetic whiner! ;o)

He IS short, but I'm surprised you'd say so. He's the same height as me, which is medium sized for a man and very tall for a woman. DB is only two inches taller. But yes, his size over all leaves much to be desired, though you can't see it as much on tv so it doesn't bother me as much. The guy who plays David Palmer suits me much better. And he is also hot. Anyway, weirdly, Keifer Sutherland is much more the type of guy I find hot, because he's not even that handsome. I've probably said it before, but I always surprised at how sexy I find DB, because DB is much better looking than the guys I usually go for. Er, I'm rambling.

And now you know why, when I spoke to David Fury I told him that he needs to torture and slowly kill Kim.

I don't know. I liked it well enough to want to see everything, though some stuff was seriously unnecessary.

I don't believe for a minute that Keifer is 5'11". I'm thinking 5'8". (IMDB claims Marsters is 5'11" which is a hoot and a half.)

They said on the show that he was 5'11" ("white male, blonde, five eleven"--in the first season). I just looked it up and most web sites seem to say 5' 10.5".

JM seems about 5' 10" or so to me. He really doesn't seem to stand much more than a couple inches shorter than Angel. What we need is a pic right now. Anyway, he always seemed fairly medium sized (Spike did, obviously) which is why I get confused when so many people say he's short. Mind, I call everyone that's shorter than me short--and most men that are the same or an inch or two taller short--but I do because I'm so tall.

We should remember that tv people are taller.

People who have seen Marsters up close and personal say he's about 5'8". Look at the power walk shots and you'll see he's quite short. In the scenes where he talking to Christian Kane, he's only a little taller than CK and CK is only about 5'7" (there's a reason he's called little lawyer Lindsey.)

How does JM only appear to be a little bit shorter than DB? Easy - he's on a box. (Look at SMG and DB - she would have come up to his belly button if she hadn't been on a box half the time.)

Boxes! Crazy! He really is short, then. Thanks for enlightening me. Even if it does shatter my Spike-image. Wah!

I guess the good thing about only coming up to DB's belly button is you get this fantastic view when you're up close.

I love that I never finished Season 3 because it was boring me to death, but your comments didn't spoil me at all. Although I am curious about what happened to tarnish Palmer. . .

Yeah, S3 seriously dragged. As did big chunks of S1 & 2, but I really got into the second 1/2 of 2, so was hoping for more. Oh well.

Hello tkp, please can you help? Could you tell me another word Buffy might use instead of 'kvetching', and is the phrase 'catch some rays' horribly cheesy? What could you say instead (Buffy again)?

What's wrong with "kvetch"? The only things I can think of are just less interesting synonyms, like "gripe" and "carp". Of course, if Buffy used the word "carp," there'd have to be a joke about fish. (She'd probably say "trouting" and everyone would look at her funny until it was finally all sorted out that she meant "carping.")

"Catch some rays" is horribly cheesy, and also something Buffy might say to make fun of surfers. So she'd probably say, "Catch some rays and then say "dude" a lot, and maybe bleach your head?"

It really depends on what you mean; it's easier to think of things like this when they're in context. If you're writing a fic and need help or a beta, I'd be happy and grateful to oblige.

In the meantime, sorry I can't be of more help. I'll think on it for you some more, but don't bet on me being interesting or coming up with anything better ;o)

Oh, that's so NICE of you! I'm day 10 in the iwry ficathon, but to tell you the truth, I don't know if I dare have any one read it over, cos...it could be utterly crap and unfixable...

Vacillates...I'd love to have someone's opinion of it, but there's not time to make any big changes, because I want to send it to Chris this weekend - so bad characterisation would probably have to stay that way, rather than be wrestled into shape...if I haven't put you off, perhaps you could drop me a line at bisi_mama @ hotmail.co.uk with your contact details and I'll send it you?
