It's Lion Turtles all the way down ([personal profile] lettered) wrote2005-11-28 01:13 am

I am excessively diverted.

1. If you haven't already read it, read It's Only Time. [livejournal.com profile] a2zmom+pr0n=OTP!

2. Then read Wish Your Heart Makes. It's a short fic about what happens to Angel during "Nightmares." It's one of [livejournal.com profile] violaclaire's first fanfics, I think, so go encourage. Now.

3. If you haven't already laughed your ass off at them (or spent way longer than you should have at f_w getting off on reading other people's cruelty and stupidity) go make yourself smile by reading fanfiction summaries [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 has compiled here. Then feast on the icons.

Speaking of icons, I am the Ralph Wiggins of icon-making. Miss Hoover, I ate my PornoEditor! I want an icon of Celes from Final Fantasy III, because I wanted to be her when I was 11 and dude, she's a hot chick holding a sword, but it's not in the cards, apparently.

Speaking of things that happened days ago (I was), the 26th of November was the day of the Netherfield Ball. The new Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley was very beautiful, very self-conscious about not upsetting Jane Austen fans by leaving out characters, and so very rushed and a little hard to follow if you don't know the story.

If you do know the story, but haven't seen it, go rent the A&E adaptation, the one with Colin Firth in it. It gets all the good stuff right--but please note, Colin Firth, as handsome as he is and as good as he is in the role (and all it's incarnations), does not make me want to change my knickers the way Matthew MacFadyen did. Who cares that he never got a chance to be significantly ungentlemanly? He's seriously hot. Then again, "Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, I am an unbelievable sap," proves some hot guys should be seen and not heard.

And now, a word from my step-grandfather, Fred.

Me: We're going to see Pride and Prejudice. You probably wouldn't like it, it's girly.
Fred: If there are girls, I want to go.
Me: Alright, but I'm warning you.
Fred: I need a warning? Is it anything like Debbie Does . . . Debbie And The Football Team . . .Debbie . . . what's that show?
Me: It's a British period movie.
Fred: Are their subtitles?
Me: They speak English in Britain.
Fred: No, they speak British in Britain.
Me: But England is in Britain and in England they speak English.
Fred: What kind of movie is this again?
Me: A romance.
Fred: You should've told me that first. Bye.

And lastly, thoughts from my kitchen to yours, Anamainiacs style.

Good idea: Convincing the family to eat turducken this year.
Bad idea: Convincing the family to eat tofurkey this year.

Good idea: Making margaritas with rum, since we ran out of tequila. Preserving extra margaritas in the freezer.
Bad idea: Mistaking the rum-margarita for chicken broth, since both are brown. Deglazing a pan full of chicken, shallots, and scallions with margarita. Eating margarita-gravy.

Good idea: Torching the top of your creme brulee with a blow torch.
Bad idea: Torching the top of your fingers with a blow torch.

Good idea: Shaking the salad dressing before you open it.
Bad idea: Shaking the salad dressing after you open it. (Trying to get Ranch off of the ceiling is a bad idea as well.)

Good idea: Making brownies.
Bad idea: Making brownies without flour, mistaking salt for sugar, and using 2.5 year old Crisco for butter.

These thoughts are all based on true events. I was going to share a recipe, but after this I'm afraid no one will trust me.

So ends the 2am ramble.

Your cooking experiances are truly scary. (Although there was the time I tried to kill a lobster. Much hiliarity ensued.)

I want to see P&P. We saw GoF yesterday and it twas good. I love Mad-Eye. And Fred sounds adorable.

And thank you for the rec.

I'm actually quite a good cook, but I do have scary stories.

I loved GoF. I renewed my HP fangirlyness, which visits about once a year and wants to read lots and lots of Very Wrong fanfic.

And I do recommend P&P, but I hope you've seen the Colin Firth one?

Fred rocks my socks. He's the one who dated my Granny 37 years before marrying her.

Someday, I will see the Colin Firth version. It's on my list.

If you have trouble finding it at rental stores I can lend you my copy. What's really difficult is finding 5 hours to watch it in.

[identity profile] aloneinthetown.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually loved Pride and Prejudice, the newer version. I haven't read the book but the movie didn't seem hard to follow at all. I loved the music and the whole atmosphere of the acting, it was beautiful. I saw parts of the old version, so I can't really compare, but it didn't seem to capture the same atmosphere as the new one. This did press me to realize that I need to read more classical fiction, though, which I will.

[identity profile] aloneinthetown.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and Final Fantasy III is freaking AWESOME. I can make you an icon if you want.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg, I love you, like, in a scary way. FFIII has always been my favorite game ever. And I would die ten deaths if you made me an icon of it.

I was trying to make one from the sketches in the play book--I've always loved the ones of Celes and Terra--but they look boring and wrong and I don't have PhotoShop, so yeah.

Sorry it's been so long but...here you go!

I love you. I'm going to marry you and have your babies and eat them and then burp a sonorous belch the whole world can smell so that they will love you too.

Er, in a completely non-sexual, not cannibalistic Emily Post way, of course.

[identity profile] aloneinthetown.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thank you. That's one of the best and weirdest compliments I've ever gotten! :)

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! A convert! Jane Austen (the author of P&P) is what got me started in fandom. It was the first thing I read fanfic for! And classical fiction is almost all that I read any more, so if you want to chat about it or want some recs, I'm here with tea and scones!

You're right about the 1995 A&E version not having the same atmosphere. There are much less pigs and sunsets and brown dresses in the older one. However, if you liked the story, I can't stress enough how awesome the Colin Firth version is. The chemistry between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy is some of the best I've seen between two actors ever; it's Scarlett and Rhett; it's SMG and DB. And while it is not as overtly beautiful as this new one, it has a subtle beauty and charm that really will sweep you off your feet.

[identity profile] semby.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really not sure I want to see the new P&P, really because I loved the A&E version so much. To me, Colin Firth is Mr Darcy, and I'm really not eager to see what they might have cut out to make it so much shorter.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in your kitchen some day! And that's the second Animaniacs reference I've heard in a week - very strange.

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the A&E version in a scary way; I'm as fangirly over it as I am about BtVS (though I'm even more fangirly about the Emma Thompson S&S). That said, I liked the new version. It was pretty and sweet, and did things in a different way.

In my head, I think I'll always see JE (for me, JE is Lizzy even more definitively than CF is Darcy), but I liked seeing a different interpretation. And despite that CF IS Darcy in my head, it's true I just haven't ever found CF that hot. He fits my image of Darcy way more than this new guy, and he gets enough time to establish the character way better, but New Guy is Teh Sex for me.

Also, they really didn't cut that much out, just things like the two gatherings at Lucas Lodge, the visit to Mrs. Philips, the Mrs. King plot, one of Wickham's visits to Longbourne, Maria Lucas, that kinda thing. I think they were afraid to cut anything essential, because there are so many rabid Jane Austen fans (like moi). However, imo, they would've been much better axing the whole Colins plot, Mary, and Kitty. You just can't fit it all in 2.5 hours, and it felt so rushed there was no time to establish any of the characters. Mr. Darcy never even got the chance to be really rude.

Ok, that was a long ramble.

And the Anamanaics fandom is scary (yes, there is a fandom). I had this quote once I couldn't place, so I googled it. It turns out the quote was from Anamanaics, and what did I discover but Anamainiacs porn.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Animaniacs porn? Never, ever tell me.

So, Yakko, Waco, and Hellllllo Nurse are all in the back seat of . . . the watertower, and . . .

[identity profile] semby.livejournal.com 2005-11-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I will probably wind up seeing the new movie, since everyone seems to be raving about it and you're right, it's nice to see different interpretations if handled well.

CF does it for me way more than what I've seen of the new guy in the previews, actually, but we'll see if that changes once I've seen the whole movie.

I'm going to pretend I didn't read that part about the Anamaniacs fandom, to save some childhood memories from being tainted!

I always spell the word "recommendation" with 2 c's because I'm a dunce. But I spell "reccing" with 2 c's because when an "i" follows a "c", the "c" is usually soft (as in "racing"). Hmmmmm.

Fred

He's the bestest. He used to be a legislator and a race car driver, and he's still a lawyer who tells lotsa lawyer jokes and buys his clothes at resale shops and dated my granny for almost 4 decades.
