Questions Post #15

FANDOM/LJ
A. Is there such a thing as an Real Person vid? I remember there was one about JM set to Pretty Fly For A White Guy, but is that...a "done" thing, to make vids about the actors themselves?
B. Is there a lot of Mary Sue RPF? Like Mary Sue meets Mister Actor at a con or something and they get it on? I don't want to read any; I'm just curious. I would think there would be but I've never seen any.
C. What's the deal with pro writers who don't like fanfiction? Where do they get off? I guess I mean that kinda literally.
D. Is there Batman/Gordon fic? Where?
E. How do you feel about...having the general subject of a post in brackets in the subject line? For instance, a post titled, "[meta] Can Soulless Spike Be Redeemed". Do you do that, the "[meta]" part? Have you done it? Have you thought about doing it? When you see other people do it, does it make you feel a certain way? It always makes me think: "I should do that! Then I would have to go back and do that to every post. Dear god, am I really that anal? Is that person as anal as I am? OMG I'M NOT ORGANIZED" *frantic hyperventilating and quick scrolling past the post* Not really, but something like that.
F. Is it just me, or are fics longer in the HP fandom? Is this just because there is *more* fic overall, so more fics-that're-long are available?
G. Um. Will someone rec me, I mean, my friend, some long long long Harry-16-or-older Snape/Harry? NO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING EITHER.
H. Why am I fannish about Horatio Hornblower? Why am I so in love with Horatio/William Bush? Why do I so often fall for small fandoms in which people have not written nearly enough porn? Why?

BUFFYVERSE
I. What do Eve and Lindsey think to gain by putting the slug thing on Angel in "Soul Purpose"?
J. Why isn't VK is S5? Seriously. Was it a money issue, a people not liking Connor issue, the writers not knowing what to do with Connor issue, or really just for the sake of plot issue?
K. Does the idea of the S8 BtVS comics make anyone else sad? It depresses me and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I would not be upset if there was an S6 of AtS. I mean, I'm glad that there'll be L. more Buffy and that Whedon is doing it, but it feels kinda bittersweet to me, and that makes me feel like I'm being a spoil sport.
M. Can you name all the episodes of AtS and BtVS? If you can't, can you at least recognize all the episode names? If you can't, about how many ep names per season would you say you know? When I first got into this fandom I was shocked by how many people seemed to know the names of eps, but now most of the time when someone says one I know which ep they're talking about.
N. Could the dimension Angel goes to to get Jasmine's name be Quar'toth? The timing doesn't work out, huh?

RANDOM
O. Do you like Rachel Ray?
P. Do you like Oprah?

FIC
Q. How often do you read fanfiction somewhere that is not your home/not somewhere where you usually use your computer? The other day I brought some fanfic to read while I waited for my Granny's hair to get done (I'm her driver.) I was embarrassed 'cause there was porn in some. I usually only read fanfic at home/school.
R. Do you mentally edit other people's fics when you read them?
S. How many days after you post a fic do you feel like the fic probably got most of the fb it's going to recieve?
T. How much do you edit your fic in the post window/Semagic/other client? This is assuming you write your fic in a word processor. Is it just select all, copy, paste, and go? Or is it C&P and then add code? C&P and one last edit? C&P and add header info?
U. How much do you think about the A/N? Do you only think/write it after you finish, or do you sometimes compose it in your head/write it as you write your fic?
V. What does an A/N Mean To You, anyway?
W. Why are forced marriage fics (fics where people get sold into marriage, or have to marry to prevent something stupid, or have to take up a pretense of marriage, etc) so compelling? I ask this as one who reads summaries about forced marriages and sniffs like the arrogant bitch that I am, then turns around and reads them. There are some freaking great ones out there, but I wonder why this plot in itself is so attractive? 'Cause it sounds stupid, and yet I find myself drawn.

Fandom LJ:

g) Here are my HP Recs, they're not sorted by pairing, sorry (http://brandil.livejournal.com/tag/hp+recs) if you check out [livejournal.com profile] painless_j's user info page you will find themed lists of all sorts, Snape/Harry is one of her favorite pairings and I think she has 5 pages of recs on them alone. Cambiare Podentes would be the one I'd send you to first, it's a slave fic though so it might not be your cuppa.

f) Yes, the fics are a lot longer and I have NO idea why.

Buffyverse:

m) Not off the top of my hand. I can however recognize all the episode names and immediately know what season they're from and possibly the order in which they aired.

Random:

I have no opinion on either.

Fic:
r) Yes.
s) 2

G. Awesome!
I *like* slave fic; it hits a lot of my kinks. I just feel that there are way too many that're badly written, and don't take advantage of the examination of power dynamics (that's the main kink it hits) that the genre lends itself to so well.

F. It makes me sad 'cause I love long fics but am not so much into HP.

Thanks for all your answers!

[E]-- I think it's a great organization tool now that you've mentioned it but I would never notice on someone else's journal. It's weird, but I very very rarely read subject lines. I would never do it because I'm not even organized enough on my journal to add tags or organize all my fic in memories so that people can actually find it. I am bad.

[H]-- [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl and [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight write HH fic and I'm sure it's quite good based on other fic in fandoms I do read. As an aside, I added HH to my Netflix list because you recommended it (in some post where I was freaking out over Jamie Bamber, I'm sure).

[J]-- I don't know! I disliked Connor very much in 3 and 4, but I loved what they did with him in 5 and would have liked to see much much more of him. I find myself absolutely adoring Connor future fic and there was a time when I wouldn't imagine that to have been possible.

[K]-- You're not the only one. Particularly after seeing some advance panels on EW's site and seeing that Buffy is in a fugly costume. Buffy Summers would *never* wear a fugly costume Joss Whedon- I don't care if she is your creation. Just because you're writing a comic book superhero doesn't mean she needs to have big boobs and a damn costume. <--see rant as to why I'm not sure that I'll buy the comic as canon.

[M]-- Not off the top of my head, but I'd be able to place most by season, and in some semblance of order

[O]-- Yes. She reminds me of a friend of mine. She (RR) seems very real and down-to-earth. And her 30-minute meals show is fine too.

[P]-- The show? No. I don't feel one way or another about the persona, but I do find people who worship her a little weird.

[S]-- 2 days

[T]-- Copy, paste, add header info. I code as I write (didn't used to, but it saves so much time). Then I usually have to hit the edit button at least 2 times to fix little errors that have escaped my attention.

e. I don't read subject lines much either, but for some reason ones organized with brackets *always* catch my eye.

h. Maren! I don't know how much you're into period drama, but this series is awesome. The weirdest thing is I can't say why; it's so...adventurey and swashbuckly, very Dickensonian. But if for nothing else, Jamie Bamber is *so* amusingly different it's funny, and I know how you love him so you're sure to get a ginormous kick out of it.

J. I love Connor at all times. But there's something about post "Home" Connor that is just so *fun*. Before that, he's so tragic he just makes me hurty. Hey, someone recently recced a Buffy/Connor fic you did, I think? I can't wait to read that.

K. I didn't see the costume! Guess I was too depressed to look closely. I'll have to read your rant. I *want* to read the comics, I just don't know if I really wanna think of them as S8.

Thanks for answering!

I pick and choose which questions I feel like answering!

All the RPS vids I've seen were made by the same girl. AND THEY ARE AWESOME. Two are Jared/Jensen and the other is this brilliant, over-the-top thing from the point of view of Chad Michael Murray about having lost his Jared to Jensen. Oh, and on You Tube there are a million vids focused on a single actor, using clips from all his/her movies and shows to concentrate the hotness. Though I have seen some slightly more focused or comical ones.

I haven't seen a lot of straight up Mary Sue RPF, notably one on FF.net about JM though, and another Jared/OFC one in the second person. Woah. I have seen other actor/OFC fic that was really not what I'd call Mary Sue fic though.

I frequently see people being more organized than me and having similar flaily moments as you.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the S8 comic. Curious, I think.

I went through a phase of printing out fic and reading it on the bus and stuff sometimes. Haven't done that in awhile. Probably will again.

Um, when I'm reading other people's fic and I see typos, I usually do yes, or sometimes if it's just one or two I'll tell them after my FB. But if I'm trying to do serious structural editing of many, many sentences that is when I am not reading that fic anymore.

The majority of FB tends to come within in 3-4 days I think, except if someone recs you somewhere prominent after that. It's an interesting phenomenon, how people don't tend to FB when they read something after the fact. I have hit counters on some of my fics and some of them get read almost every day and are rarely FB-ed. And maybe they just don't like it but then, um, why would you read through to the end of a longer story. Maybe other people aren't as back button friendly as I am.

I code my stories in Word. Any editing done later is because I was obsessively rereading right after posting and noticing wee things.

Sometimes I think about the A/N while I'm writing but with shorter stories usually, no. The whole header is an advertisement for you fic, basically. So the challenge is to try and make clear-ish what people might be getting if they read it.

Periodically, I get a "thing" for a fandom/pairing that is innocent and wanting and all the fic isn't above a PG13 rating. I *need* for their to be porn, and there is none. Sometimes (i.e. Joan of Arcadia) I write it myself and then wander off. Othertimes I continue to be annoyed. Currently it's Rory/Dean. Don't mock! I have a sideline thing for sweet, "nice" people doing really dirty things in a schmoopy way. Why do people act like if you're like that you aren't also lustful?

RPVid --The reason I ask is that I have one in my head for VK and wanted to know whether that made me a freak. Guess not.

I went through a phase of printing out fic and reading it on the bus and stuff sometimes. Haven't done that in awhile. Probably will again.

I...brought my laptop on the bus once to read Luke Skywalker fic. I am a woman of strange tastes.

It's an interesting phenomenon, how people don't tend to FB when they read something after the fact.

The only times when I understand this is when the story is on an archive and there's not an easy way to hit, "reply". But if the fic is a few months old on lj, I frankly don't get it.

So the challenge is to try and make clear-ish what people might be getting if they read it.

Yeah. My problem is I have a tendency to want to make mine say, "Uh. Don't read this. You won't like this." For that B/A epic thingy I'm writing, the A/N in my head is, "If you're not really into B/Aer, you won't like this. And if you're really into B/A... you won't like this either." I guess 'cause it's a shipper fic in which Angel fucks everyone and their mom in the middle. How does this happen?

I write it myself and then wander off.

My problem is I *start* to write it and then lose interest, and then later when I come back to it there still isn't any porn in that fandom. My life is hard, yo.

Rory/Dean. Don't mock! I have a sideline thing for sweet, "nice" people doing really dirty things in a schmoopy way. Why do people act like if you're like that you aren't also lustful?

I like Rory/Dean. I think I kinda shipped Rory/Jess when I watched that show but it was because I was so into Luke/Lorelai and I liked the parallels. Anyway, I hate that, too. Sweet n' nice people can be raunchy, too!

D. Is there Batman/Gordon fic? Where?

The DC Fic index community should have some. Not that I recall where it is, exactly. But I've seen it!

I do it because I'm the least organized human on the planet. It's like a lo-jack for my thoughts.

After YEARS of LJ, and being Miss Random Subject Queen, I realized OMG, I couldn't freaking FIND posts I *knew* I'd made. (Seriously, by random, I mean, there was a time when my subjects tended to be "!&--" or some other random characters that meant something at the time [in that example, "bang and dash"] in the code that my brain was using then, but that I can no longer decrypt.)

And I'd go painstakingly through the archives, cranky at myself for thinking "...so, heh. monkeyspice." or something was a descriptive enough subject, always having to search EVERY SINGLE POST in the general timeframe before finding the one little snippet I needed.

Finally, I snapped, and started to add "[Subject]" to my "!!! FLAIL!!!" subject lines for the sake of my sanity.

Dude, totally.

I used to, but they blur now. I'd know it if someone mentioned it.

R. Do you mentally edit other people's fics when you read them?

All the time.

S. How many days after you post a fic do you feel like the fic probably got most of the fb it's going to recieve?

36 hours.

T. How much do you edit your fic in the post window/Semagic/other client? This is assuming you write your fic in a word processor. Is it just select all, copy, paste, and go? Or is it C&P and then add code? C&P and one last edit? C&P and add header info?

Depends on the length. One-off things that have never seen a beta, they get a final edit in the post window, then a C&P into the source file.

U. How much do you think about the A/N? Do you only think/write it after you finish, or do you sometimes compose it in your head/write it as you write your fic?

Usually a last minute thing for posting.

V. What does an A/N Mean To You, anyway?

Annoying Noise. I mean, authors notes. I hate having to write those things.

Tropes deeply embedded in our cultural frame of reference? Some fandoms, Aliens Made Them Do It just doesn't quite work with canon? Over consumption of trashy romances at tender ages (see answer the first).

Man, I love those things.

After YEARS of LJ, and being Miss Random Subject Queen, I realized OMG, I couldn't freaking FIND posts I *knew* I'd made.

I haven't been around years...but I'm having the same difficulty. Actually, I don't know why I so often need to go find old posts of mine, but it's happened enough to where about a month ago, I spazzed and retitled every single post I'd ever made since I got to lj. Now I might need to do it again, with brackets. I...fear myself.

Annoying Noise. I mean, authors notes. I hate having to write those things.

I have a love/hate relationship with them. I hate reading them, get on with the story please. I love writing them, I get to explain what I'm on about. But then writing them becomes a torturous process, because I try to make them short so as not to annoy myself, who hates to read them. I'm...bad at writing short.

Tropes deeply embedded in our cultural frame of reference? Some fandoms, Aliens Made Them Do It just doesn't quite work with canon? Over consumption of trashy romances at tender ages (see answer the first).

I was wondering about the trashy romances. But where did the trashy romances get it? But yeah, it's a circle.

Man, I love those things.

Uusually, I hate myself for loving them.

Hi!

Picking a few random ones to answer, because I should really be working on a paper:

It makes me sad, in a way, because I really liked the idea that Buffy's story was kind of . . . not over, but in a place where she could be relatively happy, and now it will probably be revealed that she's horribly traumatized and depressed and people are dying and all kinds of awful Whedon-things. On the other hand, I'm kind of selfishly happy that there will be new material that I can consume at the same time as everyone else, instead of doing the DVD thing and getting spoiled for everything the instant I wander on-line. (No, I'm not bitter that I knew that Buffy would die and that she was in heaven and Tara was going to die and Willow would flay Warren and Spike would die and come back. Not at all :) )

M. Can you name all the episodes of AtS and BtVS? If you can't, can you at least recognize all the episode names? If you can't, about how many ep names per season would you say you know?

. . . I think I can name all of BtVS in order until mid-S7, but everything blends after Showtime. I can probably name all of AtS S1 in order too. And what I don't know off the top of my head, I can usually recognize. That's a little disturbing, actually.

O. Do you like Rachel Ray?

I only saw her show once, but she referred to "extra-virgin olive oil" as "ee-vee-oh-oh," and ever since then I've kind of disliked her. Does that make me a bad person?
ext_7189: (Default)

OMG DON'T READ YOUR FIRST COMMENT NOTIFICATION

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-12-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Um. Um? I can't remember whether you've gotten to see all of AtS. In view of the whole spoilers conversation, I edited this comment. I'm a real ditz.

I really liked the idea that Buffy's story was kind of . . . not over, but in a place where she could be relatively happy, and now it will probably be revealed that she's horribly traumatized and depressed and people are dying and all kinds of awful Whedon-things.

Maybe this is what makes me sad, too.

(No, I'm not bitter that I knew that Buffy would die and that she was in heaven and Tara was going to die and Willow would flay Warren and Spike would die and come back. Not at all :)

For some reason, I didn't really care about spoilers. I have difficulty assessing my mood at the time, but I got into Buffyverse fandom almost simultaneously with Buffyverse itself, and it was just so limiting to try to stay spoiler free. I didn't actively search for spoilers, but yeah, knew most of it before it happened. This is the part that I cut 'cause I started talking about which spoilers I knew and didn't know. And I actually managed to not know a big one. Maybe you have too which is why I deleted my first comment and did this one.

I only saw her show once, but she referred to "extra-virgin olive oil" as "ee-vee-oh-oh," and ever since then I've kind of disliked her. Does that make me a bad person?

I don't think it makes you a bad person, but this is the reason I ask. First time I saw her she drove me nuts and I thought she was the most annoying things on earth. But after I watched her several times I noticed that her meals seemed REALLY good and REALLY easy, so I started making some. After that I watched the show for the recipes, and then I started to find her incredibly endearing. Her stupid EVOO stuff just adds to the charm--she knows she's a goofball and has fun with it instead of trying not to be lame.

A. Probably, but I don’t care.
B. Absolutely. But I don’t care.
C. I understand exactly how some of them feel, actually (the ones who are squicked by the idea of someone else doing Awful Things to their babies.) The ones like Lee Goldberg are just insane.
D. Probably, but I don’t care.
E. I don’t care.
F. Dunno. And don’t care.
G. No.
H. I don’t know. I care a little, though.

BUFFYVERSE
I. They’re just messing with him, i.e. “Plot? We were supposed to have a plot?”
J. Connor/Cordy was HIDEOUSLY unpopular. Also, cost-cutting.
K. It makes me sad because I have no interest at all in the Slayer School. Joss may be tired of Angel and Spike, but I’m way more interested in what happens to them than in Buffy living la dolce vita in Rome.
M. No, yes, and most.
N. No, it couldn’t, because for all its hellishness, Quor-toth had a breathable atmosphere.

RANDOM
O. Not much.
P. Not much.

FIC
Q. Very seldom.
R. Sometimes
S. Two.
T. Depends on the fic. Short ones, yes, long ones, I’ve already edited the heck out of them and would only do a last look-over for typos.
U. I don’t think about them much. I have a template.
V. A thing at the beginning of the story that turns 90% of the possible readers away.
W. I dislike them intensely, and generally hit the back button as soon as that immortal line "If you don't marry/have sex with/become the slave of X, the universe will implode/demons will inhabit the earth/this puppy will die!" shows up.

G. Ah, but someone did!
H. Why?

K. As I understand it, it's not because Whedon is tired of Angel and Spike that he does not continue with them, but because he does not own the characters of AtS. I could be wrong about his motives, though.

V. Ha, why is that?
W. Whenever I see it in the summary I think it's the lamest thing ever...and yet often I end up reading and enjoying anyway. I don't know what's wrong with me either.

Why isn't VK is S5? Seriously. Was it a money issue, a people not liking Connor issue, the writers not knowing what to do with Connor issue, or really just for the sake of plot issue?

This seems to depend a lot on who you ask. VK says that it was partially plot-drive (i.e., adding Spike to the mix stirred things up in interesting ways)and partially driven by the overwhelming hatred of Connor by fans (my words, not his).

Initially, the way things played out was that during the early Spring of....um, JESUS *2003*? Is that right? Ohmygod. Anyways. During the early spring of 2003, there was a lot of talk (again) about how expensive AtS was getting for the WB. Jordan Levin in particular had some kind of bee up his butt about the show or about Whedon or about the show and Whedon. Something. BtVS was wrapping up, and there were a lot of rumors about JM jumping over to AtS after BtVS was over. (You should have seen LJ during that Spring. I think there officially too many wanks to record.)

So, around the end of April, early May, ME started officially leaking info on JM's participation on AtS, to get a feel for fan reaction and so that they could give some numbers to the WB about how much they could expect viewership to increase due to Spike's presence. Spike was initally rumored to be signed up for 12 episodes, and then we heard that JM had said that he wouldn't come on board or anything less than a full season (I don't blame him in the least). I don't know if you were around for this period of time, but the fan reaction towards Spike was the biggest thing I've ever seen in fandom. Jossverse was the biggest fandom in the world (XF was finally waning and HP hadn't hit it huge yet, if memory serves) and Spike was the biggest character in it. Conversely, Connor was almost universally hated and had been since the moment he was born (actually the moment the idea of him was announced, but I digress). Connor-hatred was really the one thing almost everyone could agree on about s4, which is interesting to think about in a post-"Origin" world. It also makes me angry (still) because the end of April/beginning of May corresponded to the last five or so episodes of s4, which is when fan reaction towards Connor started shifting a bit. In the perserve way that fandom can be sometimes, it took Connor revealing that he'd known about Jasmine the whole time to get fans to start trusting him. The whole, Holtz-used-to-tie-me-to-a-tree-and-leave-me-there-to-either-die-or-escape thing seemed to garner some sympathy as well, as did the church scene in "Peace Out." All in all, despite threats of cancellation and wishy-washy feelings about having Spike on the show at all aside, things were looking pretty optimistic. Whedon himself said in a TV Guide article in early May that no one was leaving the show, that rumors of Charisma Carpenter and/or Vincent Kartheiser being fired were wholly unfound. May 8th, "Home" aired. May 12th, they made the announcement that JM was going to become a full member of the show, and CC and VK were out. You're lucky you did not know me during this time. I was INSANE with grief. I left the fandom. I still haven't seen the first ten episode of s5. I still think that Vincent Kartheiser was fired to make financial room for James Marsters. In the perverse way that fandom is somtimes, I enjoy nothing more than writing stories about how these two guys, whose lives almost intersected, and whose success that one year was dependent on the failure of the other, have a lot of buttsex.

The end.

I have no doubt whatsoever that VK *and* CC were let go in order to squirrel together the money for Marsters. The numbers for AtS had been down all through Season 4, and the WB pretty much blackmailed ME into bringing Marsters on board for ratings purposes. It was either, "Hire him or the show is cancelled." Yet in true WB cheap-o fashion, it wouldn't cough up the extra dough to implement any of the changes it was demanding. So ME had to get rid of two actors in order to pay for the one that the network was insisting upon.

Of course, ME did everything the network asked for, and the ratings shot up by 20 per cent, and the WB STILL cancelled the fucking show; because they were too cheap to pay the extra money that production companies traditionally demand after a five-year run, when they're officially allowed to syndicate.

Yes, I am bitter.

Here's me blathering about naming the BtVS/AtS.

I remember reading that post now! I thought you were INSANE.

And yet I found myself trying to do it weeks ago, not remembering you'd tried it too. I missed lots more than you, though.

I prefer WRITING. I love your fic!

[identity profile] magnoliafires.livejournal.com 2006-12-01 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
B. Heh, that stuff was the reason I got into my primary fandom (lotrps). I read a bunch of Mary Sue/Orlando Bloom, and it was sooo bad.

O. I cannot stand her. She's too happy. You know those people that are so happy it becomes obnoxious and grating? Yeah.

P. I like Oprah. I have a lot of respect for her, and how much money she has. *G*

Q. I've read fic at work before, which can be a harrowing experience. I work at a bookstore, and the tills are computers with internet access. So, you're continually interrupted by customers wanting to buy books and co-workers wondering what you're reading. O_o

R. If they're bad enough that I feel the need to edit, I hit the back button.

B. I've...ficced myself in my head with famous people. I am deeply ashamed of this. But I assume other people've done it too...

O. I hated her at first, got used to her, and now I love her.

Q. That does sound harrowing!

I. What do Eve and Lindsey think to gain by putting the slug thing on Angel in "Soul Purpose"?
Defeat of the Senior Partners and bringing Lindsey back from the dead? Oh, wait, that's my fic...

K. Does the idea of the S8 BtVS comics make anyone else sad?
Yes, because for me, a comic book can never, ever have the emotional impact that a TV series or movie can have, or a novel, or even fanfic. I've cried watching TV and movies. I've cried reading novels and fanfic. I've never cried reading a comic book.

M. Can you name all the episodes of AtS and BtVS? If you can't, can you at least recognize all the episode names?
Not all, but probably about half of them. I can name every episode of AtS Season 5. I wonder why that is... *g*

P. Do you like Oprah?
I like the fact that she's a philanthropist and helps out worthy causes. She does good things with her money, and that's admirable. I loathe her as an interviewer. Every single interview she ever does ends up being about herself.

Q. How often do you read fanfiction somewhere that is not your home/not somewhere where you usually use your computer?
Never at work. When I visit the homestead, I read fic on my parents' computer. I think they'd both die of heart attacks if they ever saw the amount of buttsex in the stuff I read. And write. My mother has issues with Teh Gay. It makes me angry. And sad for her.

R. Do you mentally edit other people's fics when you read them?
Oddly enough, I never do... which is completely not what I would expect from me. I usually edit everything, all the time.

S. How many days after you post a fic do you feel like the fic probably got most of the fb it's going to recieve?
Two. Though in the case of my recent B/A fic, I think I was being optimistic. :S

T. How much do you edit your fic in the post window/Semagic/other client?
I don't use a client. I hand-code everything in the "update LJ" window, which is a big pain in the ass. I've recently thought about downloading a client, after my last marathon fic. Which one would you recommend?

U. How much do you think about the A/N?
Only after I'm finished.

V. What does an A/N Mean To You, anyway?
Um... Angel/Nina? *g*

W. Why are forced marriage fics so compelling?
I don't know, but I would pay money to read a convincing Spike/Angel forced marriage fic. :D

I had half of a reply written to you before I got so caught up, but I don't know where it went. I'll get back to you on other things later, but I suddenly remembered this, and felt you shouldn't waste another moment:

I don't use a client. I hand-code everything in the "update LJ" window, which is a big pain in the ass. I've recently thought about downloading a client, after my last marathon fic. Which one would you recommend?

Get Semagic. Really really get Semagic. I thought a client would be a hassle, like the real text editor thing in the post window, but it's not at all like that. I guess part of the reason I love Semagic so much is I sometimes do posts with lotsa links, which gets so tiresome by hand. But even if you don't do lots of links, it's just nice to have for posting fics. I can't rec it highly enough.

oh yeah and since it's there staring at me:

I don't know, but I would pay money to read a convincing Spike/Angel forced marriage fic. :D

Me too. Hop to it, woman.

B. Is there a lot of Mary Sue RPF? Like Mary Sue meets Mister Actor at a con or something and they get it on? I don't want to read any; I'm just curious. I would think there would be but I've never seen any.

Apparently so, though I've seen next to none of it. One of the writers of AtS started out doing fanfic. And it was MarySue/DB fic. No shit.

C. What's the deal with pro writers who don't like fanfiction? Where do they get off? I guess I mean that kinda literally.

Their writing universally sucks ass.

E. How do you feel about...having the general subject of a post in brackets in the subject line? It always makes me think: "I should do that! Then I would have to go back and do that to every post. Dear god, am I really that anal? Is that person as anal as I am? OMG I'M NOT ORGANIZED" *frantic hyperventilating and quick scrolling past the post* Not really, but something like that.

I feel that way about tags. Right down to the hypervetilating. I deleted all my tags except for the one that says "fic", b/c my OCD went into overdrive at the thought of categorizing every godamn thing I have ever said on LJ since 2002.

G. Um. Will someone rec me, I mean, my friend, some long long long Harry-16-or-older Snape/Harry? NO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING EITHER.

Check Fod's delicious account, and her friends' list on delicious. They share that kink with you, and bookmark fic there obsessively.

BUFFYVERSE

I. What do Eve and Lindsey think to gain by putting the slug thing on Angel in "Soul Purpose"?

Lindsey wanted Angel out of the game permanently. He could never manage to kill him. This way, he could take Angel out, and maipulate Spike as the new Champ to do whatever Lindsey and Eve wanted.

J. Why isn't VK is S5? Seriously. Was it a money issue, a people not liking Connor issue, the writers not knowing what to do with Connor issue, or really just for the sake of plot issue?

Fod has the most thorough answer, above. I always find it weird that people use Concord as an excuse. Uhm, it was SUPPOSED TO BE GROSS, ya'll.

I don't like it either. Esp since the vamps are owned by another company, and therefore won't appear. It smacks of Joss trying desperately to convince us that the whole Potentials thing was a good idea. Too little, too late, and frankly, I just don't care. I stopped caring in S7, let alone a two-dimensional S8 and - uhm. Sorry. I might be bitter.

Yes,yes, I can. I can also tell you what Angel wore in most of the AtS eps. And look at a still of him and tell you what ep it's from. I have no life.

N. Could the dimension Angel goes to to get Jasmine's name be Quar'toth? The timing doesn't work out, huh?

Fuck canon, write it anyway.

RANDOM
O. Do you like Rachel Ray? No.
P. Do you like Oprah? God, no.

FIC

R. Do you mentally edit other people's fics when you read them?

All the time. It's annoying, and I wish I could stop.

S. How many days after you post a fic do you feel like the fic probably got most of the fb it's going to recieve?

2-3 days.

U. How much do you think about the A/N? Do you only think/write it after you finish, or do you sometimes compose it in your head/write it as you write your fic?

Both. I'm wordy.

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2006-12-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yes,yes, I can. I can also tell you what Angel wore in most of the AtS eps. I can do that with Xander, therefore out-dorking you. I didn't think I could do AtS, but I had just had Caza drill me (I will not 'heh' there - I won't) with an ep guide book, and I could name all of them except "Magic Bullet" (dammit!) if prompted with plot.

Lots of good questions! Of course my brain is feeling all mushy so I'll just answer some random ones! *g*

M. Yes! I can do names and numbers. When I was first getting into BtVS/AtS and trying to figure out which episodes I still hadn't seen, I was also finishing my degree and I would get often really bored in class. So to not fall asleep, I started writing out the episodes and ended up memorizing them.

Q. I actually started reading fanfic at work (this was pre having a computer at home). Now it's a pretty even split between reading at work and at home. I've occasionally printed things off and read them on the subway but didn't like that cause people will often read over your shoulder. I do a lot of my fanfic writing on the subway though. I find it a really productive time and never worry about people seeing it because I have atrocious handwriting. I've also written on buses, planes and in airports - also fruitful fic writing places!
R. Yes - but obviously that's if there's errors in the fic. I try to avoid reading fic that has lots of errors! *g*
S. 2 or 3. But it can depend if I post to communities a few days after posting to my LJ.
T. I always copy and paste from my word document once all the editing it finished. But I will read it over in the preview pane and will occasionally catch some small mistake.
U. I often use variations on the same ones and will just add or alter - mostly because I don't want to come up with something new.
V. I normally use it thank my betas and give other info, like if it was written for a ficathon or something.

I would say you're crazy. Except that the whole reason I asked is I started doing the same thing a couple weeks ago!

I do a lot of my fanfic writing on the subway though. I find it a really productive time and never worry about people seeing it because I have atrocious handwriting. I've also written on buses, planes and in airports - also fruitful fic writing places!

I also write in more places than I read--for the same reasons, less people will be able to read what I'm writing. I have a funny personal shorthand, just to be sure! But it was invented for note-taking, not fic-writing, so I'm not scary. *looks shifty*

T. I always copy and paste from my word document once all the editing it finished. But I will read it over in the preview pane and will occasionally catch some small mistake.

Me too, but the trouble is, I have to reread after I fix every little mistake, and end up finding new tiny mistakes every time! Eventually I either get bored and put it back into Word to fix it more, or get bored and just post the damn thing.

Thanks for doing some of these questions!

hey think they're G-d's gift and no one else could do justice to their amazing creations. Or, they're named Ann Rice and are on crack.

One of my favorite authors (Robin McKinley) does the whole, "I hate fanfic don't write it about my books or I will suuuuuuuuuuue!!!!!1" schtick. What's funny is her latest book was about vampires (I wouldn't read it for a long time because I didn't like vampires. I was tired of the whole Anne Rice Buffy obsessed culture. I couldn't believe *my* author actually stooped to writing vamps...), and she's a HUGE Buffy fan, and her characters read so much like B/A it's not funny. Amber Benson has a review on the back of the jacket!

I try to use subject titles they will suck the unwitting into reading my sad excuse for a post.

Your titles are cute and your posts are interesting. So shut up!

h. this is the question for the ages. that, and why doesn't Peter on Heroes get a haircut.

A better question is why doesn't Gaius get a haircut.

I'm pissed that BtVS/AtS are still frigging separate.

Do you mean, owned separately? So Whedon's continuing Buffy but not Angel?

In season 6 they all had the same name - Smashed, crushed, broken, really broken, fucked up (that one was particularly good). Oh and normal again.

HAHAHAHHAHAH! I actually thought Fucked Up was kinda like all the other eps. I never thought of Normal Again that way.

They were all called "boring with too many characters no one cares about".

True!

hopefully it will make want to read the fic. or. alternatively, give it a wide berth.

For some reason my A/Ns are almost always the latter. I had to work really hard on my A/N for my IWRY fic not to say, "I wrote this total slapdash last minute; do not read this; do not think ill of me; please!"

w. the fact that I've even read one forced marriage fic is more than I should admit to. And I've read more than one. I need to do some sort of penance.;

I feel guilty too. And yet, I like some of them.

x,y,z feel unloved.

M. I'd say I could recognize them all, and nowadays might have to think awhile to remember what exactly happened within a lot of the less-popular, less-significant plot-wise, less-discussed episodes. I used to be much better, but haven't been rewatching and discussing as much in the last year or so, and find that it doesn't take long of not constantly rewatching/discussing episodes for the memories to get muddled in my mind.

O. Would it shock you if I said that while I've heard the name Rachel Ray, to my knowledge I've never actually seen her and honestly, couldn't pick her out of a line up? This rock I live under is nice and snuggly.

Q. Never, not ever. I'm very paranoid about being caught at these things.

R. All the time, and I feel like a bitch doing so, like I'm judging their fic as not ready to post or whatever. I mainly just get picky at grammar things (misused apostrophes drive me the absolute nuttiest) and sometimes when I would have phrased something a little differently.

U & V: A/N is not something I think about till the end, and not something I use unless I feel like something has to be said, like thanks to the beta (although often I'll just use a separate "thanks to:" line) or whether it's for a specific challenge. Sometimes when I get to the end, I'll notice something plot-wise that I think has to be clarified, but not usually.

W: I know what you mean even though it's been awhile before I've been caught up in one. I don't know what it is. Also, when I was like 13 or so, I used to raid my mom's collection of crappy romance novels, and that seemed to be a recurring plot line in those too. It obviously hits some guilty pleasure buttons for a lot of people.

less-popular, less-significant plot-wise, less-discussed

Yeah! [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue is doing this thing where everyone watches an "obscure" ep, and talks about it. It's because she recently watched an obscure ep and forgot how good it was, even though it's kinda a nothing ep. These eps interest me, because so many of them are actually pretty cool, but don't get talked about much. Huh.

O. Would it shock you if I said that while I've heard the name Rachel Ray, to my knowledge I've never actually seen her and honestly, couldn't pick her out of a line up? This rock I live under is nice and snuggly.

No, it doesn't shock me! Most people other people talk about half the time, I have no idea who they're talking about! I only know Rachel Ray 'cause my mommy loves her. Well, I love her too, but through my mother.

Sometimes when I get to the end, I'll notice something plot-wise that I think has to be clarified, but not usually.

See, my problem is I always feel like I have to make excuses for the fic, or people won't understand what the hell I'm doing!

Also, when I was like 13 or so, I used to raid my mom's collection of crappy romance novels, and that seemed to be a recurring plot line in those too. It obviously hits some guilty pleasure buttons for a lot of people.

Yeah, part of the reason I was wondering is 'cause of those romance novels. It certainly is a tried and...well, true might be going to far. Tried and tired plot. And still, I get a kick outta it.

A: Eliza Dushku, "Get The Party Started", by Aimee. Mmm-alicious.

(All of Aimee's work is worth checking out, particularly the remixed trailer for "Blade". Meta wowsers!)

C: Oh, honey. There are more reasons than there are people. One of the most outspoken examples being Lee Goldberg ("Is Fanfic Legal?", among many others if you care to peruse his ouevre on the matter.

K: I don't know. I'm looking forward to the comics, and I'm hoping they don't suck. I won't necessarily feel obligated to accept those events as canon if it doesn't ring true to me, but a lot of that stems from having five years worth of my own post-Chosen series mapped out.

M: Nine times out of ten. I remember when I was like that for all six seasons of Xena, show me two seconds' worth out of the episode and I was all like NAME THAT TUNE BITCH and PWND.

P: I had such a mad crush on Oprah when I was in high school, even when I disagreed with her, which was often. She didn't need to lose *near* as much weight as she did at one point, either.

Q: If I had a PDA or laptop or something, I'd read (and write) fanfic just about anywhere. As is, pretty much just at home.

R: Um, only if they need it. If my internal editor keeps going off, there has to be a good draw to get me to stick with it.

S: Depends when I posted it, I figure everyone has different schedules, especially student-teacher types. I post fb all the time on stories that are years old that I just now stumbled upon.

T: Copy, paste, one last edit.

C. Yeah. But Goldberg is an idgit. HOW COME EVERYONE DOESN'T THINK LIKE ME?

P. As far as her weight goes, I think she looks awesome these days.

R. My problem is I internally edit whether they need it or not. I mean, I do it with fics I *love*, and think are better than mine! What's with that?

Thanks for answering these questions!

Isn't that a picture from The Secret Garden? I'm sure it's a picture from TSG. And oh, now I remember there was some TSG fic at last year's Yule I never checked! *whirls*

What's the deal with pro writers who don't like fanfiction?

I've always believed it's an us vs. them thing, personally. As if they want this barrier between pro and fanfic.

Is it just me, or are fics longer in the HP fandom?

There is more fics in HP? I should go and see. *nodnod* And, I don't know. I believe the average wordcount in HP is the same as, say, BtVS. For every novel-length story, there are around 20 medium-length and 100 fics - please let's not talk about ficlets/drabbles. lol!

Harry-16-or-older Snape/Harry

Lemme check. *sigh* Can't find it. There was coffee. and Horoscope. I may begin to bawl if I can't remember where it is.

Does the idea of the S8 BtVS comics make anyone else sad?

I'm not sure if 'sad' is the right word, but I'm not happy. I've never really rooted for a post-Chosen canon world. I dislike Chosen. I don't buy that SiTs becoming Slayers will solve anything and, personally, I'm not interested in a world full of Slayers (unless it was to see how there'll be ONE Slayer again)

Second reason, I love Joss's mind. I believe he's only a couple torture tricks below genius (or maybe the torture tricks are the way to his genius? *shrug*) But, the fact is that Joss working on the characters after the series end scares me. One word: Wash.

If you can't, can you at least recognize all the episode names?

BtVS1-2-3 and AtS5. Quiz me! Other seasons, not so much. Or, not at all, really. I have a handle of BtVS7 and maybe AtS4, but I don't manage them.

How many days after you post a fic do you feel like the fic probably got most of the fb it's going to recieve?

The day after, really. LJ is a place where, if they don't see it, they'll never will (unless you drop the link at different comms a week after the post). But, imho, the first 24 hours are it.

Hm. It is C&P (I'm used to coding for LJ as I write), add headers, post and then give a last edit.

A/N - Author's Notes, right?

Why are forced marriage fics so compelling?

Because they are bad situations that MUST turn good - come on, where have you seen one of these stories without a happy ending? The world will implode the day this 'forcedly married' couple does get a divorce (or if they do, if they stick to it!)

Real life doesn't have any MUSTS attached.

A/N

C. I guess it's their right to be offended, but I honestly don't see the point. Sure, you probably shouldn't read it, but you should be flattered, eh? The way I see it, no fanfic has EVER made me not spend money on original product. Ever. In fact, I only read HP still because I want to keep up with F_W.
D. Let me know.
J. Because then he'd have to get it on with Spike. It was just too messy.
K. I don't know. How do you feelings about the last season of each compare? Might the answer lie there?
M. I'm probably almost 100% on BtVS. None on AtS. I used to know every X-Files ep title, but they are gone from my mind now.
O. Don't know her.
P. No.
Q. I read it at work, which I feel guilty about.
R. Oh hell yes. Unless it's too much editing, in which case I either stop reading or ignore it so as to enjoy the wankiness.
S. Since I get so little (*sob*) I figure after a day or two I'm done.
T. C&P, add header, done.
U. A/N? Should I be doing that?
V. See above.
W. Uh... gah... I don't know. Maybe because it's like a "non-con" situation that's not quite so dire; you can "give in" to the bodice-rippery in a relatively safe spot. I imagine it's also akin to the "I hate you because I love you," Anne/Gilbert Lizzy/Darcy scenario or the "Spike and Buffy get locked in a closet! snark leads to sex! everyone feels somewhat guilty!" Ooh, maybe the guilt; maybe there's shame in falling in love with someone you've been forced to be with.

(Any recs?)

It's TOOL TIME! Oh yeah, right.

B. Wouldn't TKP/Angel's ass would be normal Mary Sue? Though I guess if you didn't name me Tary K Pue and actually kept me as TKP, it *would* qualify as RPS. Huh. Never thought about that. There's a defense of Mary Suedom or an offense on RPF in there, somewhere.
C. I ask because Robin McKinley is one of those who, like Anne Rice, has publicly spoken and lobbied against it. Have I mentioned I think she's a bitch in RL?

J. I don't see how that's a problem. Seriously.
K. I loved the endings of both, but yeah, you're right, Buffy I want to end end and Angel I want to know what happens next. But that answer wasn't sitting right with me, and I think the explanation for my sadness actually has more to do with what germaine_pet says above: comics aren't really a medium I'm inclined to care deeply about or shed tears over. Possibly I just haven't been reading the right comics; I don't know.

U. I find A/Ns annoying, but I tend to write them because I feel the need to make excuses for myself. I *hate* it when other authors do that.
W. Ooh, maybe the guilt; maybe there's shame in falling in love with someone you've been forced to be with.

That could very well be it.

The best forced marriage fic I've ever read is Protocol, by [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen. I doubt you'll like it--it's A/Wes, and ANgel is a KING and Wesley is a SLAVEBRIDE TYPE THING and there's a KITTEN and god, it's so good. TBQ is a genius. The voices are SPOT ON for each character, even though they're in such a bizarre situation.

Er, so I just wanted to try mi hand in this...

FANDOM/LJ
C.They get off right around the parking space called 'ignorance'

D. I don't know where but knowing fandom there is one. Somewhere.

E. I can honestly say that I have never done that because I haven't posted enough to do so. *shuffles feet in shame*

F. It does seem that way doesn't it? They do just kind of go on and on and on and on and on...

G. Sorry, haven't ventured into HP in a long time. It kind of scares me.

H. That is between you and your god.

BUFFYVERSE
I. What do Eve and Lindsey think to gain by putting the slug thing on Angel in "Soul Purpose"?

Get Angel in bed naked and sweaty?

J. Why isn't VK is S5? Seriously. Was it a money issue, a people not liking Connor issue, the writers not knowing what to do with Connor issue, or really just for the sake of plot issue?

No clue but peole before me explained it better.

At first I felt deliriously happy then I felt mixed ('cause of the clothes and undoubtedly all the misery she'll feel again) then when I saw the previews I can't help but swing back to deliriously happy especially when Buffy offhandedly answers the Immortal conundrum. Plus, how can I not love special ops Buffy?? (But the clothes... really. *pain*)

M. Bet your horses and pony I can! Its the kind of thing I pride myself on, for the longest time I thought I was the only Buffy fan in my country so I thought I *had* to uphold the Buffy flag by memorizing every. single. episode. title.

Then I learned I wasn't alone. :D

N. Could the dimension Angel goes to to get Jasmine's name be Quar'toth? The timing doesn't work out, huh?

I kinda thought he went to Sauron's place or something

RANDOM
O. Do you like Rachel Ray?

Uh, who?

P. Do you like Oprah?

I can't help but like her, she gives things away and so nice and I am shallow. Please don't shun me!

FIC
Q. It used to be home and school then I thought, hello there's a reason why the printer was invented so now I read fic everywhere -- although the ones that have NC-17 situations in them make me more than a mite uncomfortable.

R. *blushes* sometimes.

S. Er, I don't post my fic -- or at least my Buffy fic but in other fandoms, the moment I post 'em I immediately hit the refresh button and keep the page on for the whole week. Because I am obsessed.

T. Er, I don't post fic in LJ but in other sites I usually cut, paste then code.

U. After I write it, yeah.

V. I love reading the author's note, I love reading an author's insight into why and how they wrote it and what lead them to writing a certain passage or how strongly she feels for the characters she writes.

W. Heh. Sometimes its like reading those really cheap romance books but, er, honestly I haven't read any forced marriage fics. *puzzles* Yet. I think.

hiya!

C.They get off right around the parking space called 'ignorance'

I feel like they're just being ignorant and close-minded, but I wonder if that is *me* being ignorant and close minded, you know? It frustrates me that I don't understand their POV, is all.

G. Sorry, haven't ventured into HP in a long time. It kind of scares me.

Scares me too! They're all nutjobs. *becomes one of them, oh dear god*

'cause of the clothes and undoubtedly all the misery she'll feel again) then when I saw the previews I can't help but swing back to deliriously happy especially when Buffy offhandedly answers the Immortal conundrum. Plus, how can I not love special ops Buffy?? (But the clothes... really. *pain*)

Musta missed the preview. But I heard about the costumey thing? I thought Whedon was going to write Buffy/Immortal comics. Huh.

M. Bet your horses and pony I can! Its the kind of thing I pride myself on, for the longest time I thought I was the only Buffy fan in my country so I thought I *had* to uphold the Buffy flag by memorizing every. single. episode. title.

Oh, what country are you from? Hahah, I think that's so funny.

I kinda thought he went to Sauron's place or something

Damn well looks like it.

I can't help but like her, she gives things away and so nice and I am shallow. Please don't shun me!

Oh I don't think you're shallow at all! I think Oprah's a great lady. She seems to have a really true heart, you know? I don't like to watch her show, but as a person I think she's a good thing for this world.

although the ones that have NC-17 situations in them make me more than a mite uncomfortable.

This was really what I was wondering about. How embarrassing is it to have your hairdresser read over your shoulder! Hhahaha he'd probably like it. He loves HP! Now, I have to try to convince him to watch Buffy. I got him onto Firefly because it's less...well, silly sounding than something called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"...but I know he'd like it if he tried it. He's the biggest fantasy dork ever.

Er, I don't post my fic -- or at least my Buffy fic

DUDE! You should. DON'T BE SHY.

I constantly refresh my email to see if I get comments on fic. LJ is handy that way; then I don't just feel like I'm checking for comments. I'm checking my email. Yeah, that's it.

I love reading the author's note, I love reading an author's insight into why and how they wrote it and what lead them to writing a certain passage or how strongly she feels for the characters she writes.

The thing is, I *love* reading the A/N if I enjoyed the story. Then I want to know about the author, and am interested in her opinions. But if I didn't like the fic I figure we'll disagree anyway. But if it's the first thing you read, you have no way of knowing whether you want to read the A/N or not 'cause you haven't read the fic! I've tried putting A/Ns at the end, but decided it lessened the effect of fic endings. Oh, well.

W. Heh. Sometimes its like reading those really cheap romance books but, er, honestly I haven't read any forced marriage fics. *puzzles* Yet. I think.

Sometimes it seems like they're everywhere. I always think they look so stupid and yet I get SUCKED IN.

Thanks for stopping by! I wonder how people see these things; I really do.

B. Whoa. That's kind of ... whoa. Seriously? That other people can actually read and such?

E. Word. I, too, feel the same anxiety of disorganization. I am filled with doom. Doom.

F. How interesting. I only ever seem to read the short stuff. And that means I haven't read much. Also, totally daunted by the mere idea of the HP fandom. I get hives.

G. ... (checks the headlines for signs of the apocalypse)

BUFFYVERSE

J. I don't think that they really knew what to do with him. He was kind of a total plot device. They retcon'd some much to make it happen, and then what?! For that matter ... what was up with killing off Cordy?! That was such a WTF moment for me! I read that Charisma Carpenter had no idea she was getting the ax until right before the new season started. How much does that suck eggs. Much of S5 seemed haphazard to me, maybe in part due to the tight structure of S4, but ...?

K. No, I'm with you. Buffy has a great run and I think that in terms of canon it needs to be done. Another season in comics seems like just dragging out the end unnecessarily. Unless we're talking serious end of the world, all is done and we're getting to see the movement into Fray. Maybe then, but otherwise? What's the real point? It's not like Firefly that didn't even get a chance to go anywhere. Buffy ran for 7 seasons.

M. I can recognize the names. I couldn't name all of them for the life of me.

RANDOM
P. Oprah is like onion rings to me. Sometimes I crave it, love it, can't get enough. Other times ... totally ties my belly into knots of not fun and I can't stand the sight of 'em.

FIC
Q. When I'm really excited to read something but don't have time to read online I print it out and take it with me. I took one of your fics with me to Mexico along with two others. It depends on how on the go I am. It is a little weird because I'm like ... hmmmm, if people knew what I'm reading.

R. Oh, what an awesome question. Sometimes. If there's something in the story that's jarring enough to bring me out of the narrative then I'll start 'fixing' it as I go along.

S. Oh, I try to give it two days or so. Typically, people have so many friends that once a day or so passes, I don't think they go back and unless it's a lj that they go to independently regardless of the Friends page, then I think that everything else gets skipped.

T. I do everything in Word then copy and paste.

U. I think I typically compose it as I write.

V. Author's Notes are all those interesting little tidbits that might help the fic to make sense. Lately, I also use it for dedications and beta thanks. But, generally, I include Spoiler info, episode info, credit info for the epigraph or summary, stuff like that. For me it's kind of random.

W. who? what? Where do I go to find this cause now I'm curious!

[identity profile] zibbycomix.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, so many questions, and I don't really know the answers to any of them! I'll guess I'll attempt to answer a few here.
C) Fanfiction is probably considered to be the bottom of the literary hierarchy. You know, there's authors who write adult books at the top, then teen authors, then children's authors, and then fanfic authors. It's a similar phenomenon to the hierarchy in acting- actors who are in plays are at the top, then actors who are in movies, then actors who are on television, then actors who are in commercials. I think people just like to think than they're better than other people in general, so that's how hierarchies get started in the first place.
D) I'd be surprised if there WASN'T Batman/Gordon fic. I'd think that would be an obvious pairing. Of course, I don't read Batman fic myself, so I don't really know.
E) I don't think that it really matters. Whatver the LJ blogger thinks is best, they should do that.
F) I think fics do tend to be long in HP fandom. I have so many on my computer that are hundreds of pages! I'm not sure why that is, really. I guess I just assumed that fics were long for every fandom.
G) I like Snape/Harry too! I thought it was a perfectly fine pairing, and then I started to compare it to real life teacher/student relationships, and then I was like, "ew!" But I STILL like Snape/Harry. Maybe I'll look into Snape/Harry in versions where Harry is not a minor. Because, apparently, LJ outlawss Snape/Harry fics where Harry is a minor anyway.
H) I had never heard of Horation Hornblower until mistful mentioned it. You know, it does surprise me that there aren't more fandoms in general. The main ones seem to be the sci-fi and fantasy fandoms. I don't care if there is porn or not, but I do like to see lots of het and slash pairings. I don't know, it's kind of fun to pair people up. Of course, when I do that, it sort of slides into wanting to pair up historical figures and authors of books. And then it's a slippery slope for wanting to pair up people in real life. So, yeah. I have to be careful with that.
0) Not really. She's okay at first, but she can get kind of grating if you watch her too much.
P) It depends on my mood. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Usually I like Ellen Degeneres better.
Q) I have read fanfiction on my lunch breaks from work at one of the computers in our staff office. I do have to be careful and make sure that it's work-safe, though. I wanted to read your "Silver Tongues" while on break at work, and then I saw that it was rated R and had "adult" themes, so I was thinking "that probably wouldn't be a good idea to read at work." I'll read it at home though. =)
R) Oh my goodness, I edit things that people write and say all the time! I usually try not to TELL the person if they say something wrong because that can get annoying. But, yes, I do have editing tendicies.
S) What's fb? But I would say a few days after would be the best, and probably a week after at the most.
U) What's A/N? I was thinking it's alternate universe, but that's AU.
V) I'll tell you when I know what it is. =P =)
W) Hm, that's an interesting question. You know, my great-grandmother had an arranged marriage. She came here from another country and had only seen a picture of her (future) husband before she reached the US and married him. But I guess an arranged marriage is different from a forced marriage. Maybe people like reading about characters not wanting to be in a relationship, but then slowly falling in love with each other? It's the whole Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth Bennet thing, I think.
I hope you liked my answers! =)
