BOOKS!

Everybody's doing that book meme thing. I did it in my head but am lazy. Anyway instead I decided to do some reading lists. Oooh! And you can too! Since I already know the answers to all mine. You could try to make every answer to each question different. That'd be fun.

1. A favorite book!
2. A book that affected you in your YA years.
3. A favorite fantasy novel.
4. A favorite sci fi novel.
5. An awesome book (possibly a favorite) you think not many people around you have heard of/read.
6. A book you own more than one copy of.
7. An author whose every single book you own/will buy.
8. The worst book you've ever read.
9. A book you dislike that lots of other people you know like.
10. The most difficult book you've ever read.
11. Tell me what kind of books your mom reads/read.

12. What have you read so far this year?

13. What are you reading now?

14. What are you reading next? (list! list! You know you want to)

Me me me! )

This is why I love my housemate.

-See Icon. ([livejournal.com profile] my_daroga's dog's name is Mr. Darcy [just another reason she is awesome]).

-She sent me this link! Of Freema getting prank called by David Tennant.

-I told her about how SAD it was that I woke up at 6am this morning to claim a prompt for [livejournal.com profile] hd_inspired and she didn't mock. And how doubly sad it was I woke up that early and still didn't get my first choice, and still she did not mock. Have not yet told her how happy it was both my prompts got claimed, but I bet she still wouldn't mock. She has a WILL OF STEEL. Seeing as how I mock myself with abandon.

-Then she told me about her own fannish escapades and it was HOT AND AWESOME.

Another Prompts Request, Harry/Draco

Pretty much Man's Best Friend was some of the best times I ever had writing. I'm trying to write more for [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational, but it's definitely going to be late. Anyway, the problem is that I like it so much I'm all serious about it now. I got the prompt from when I asked which fics I would never write. Come on, it was Angel gets a freakin' *puppy*, people; I don't know how to take that seriously (thank you [livejournal.com profile] jgracio). And because I couldn't take it seriously I came up with some stuff I really liked. Thus endeth the whining section of our program.

Now for the requesty part! I don't have that many Harry/Draco friends, but if you read them/like them/know them at all! Here is your place to give me a crack prompt for H/D. It can be as cracktastic as you like! Something you think could never be written! Or no one would want to write! As cracktastic as this! I can't say I'll actually write it, but I need to stop stressing about that Eighth Year fic I want to write and can't because I'm way too serious about it. Only H/D, guys. I feel very bad for all the Buffy people on my friendslist, and even worse for the few of you here for other reasons, but I can't get them off my head.

ETA: I didn't realize this until now. But if you have any crack prompts that could take place at Hogwarts, right after DH, with Harry and co. returning to make up that 7th year--I'd be more likely to do that. Thanks!

And/Or! Go leave your crack prompts at [livejournal.com profile] hd_inspired, here, and maybe other people will pick them up. There needs to be more crack there, people! Do the world a service like a good samaritan.

I'm still working on the drabble prompts. If you want to submit one, please do, just leave the fandom off. Thank you!

Phantom Of The Opera Secrets

From [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga, announcing Phantom Secrets fun over on her LJ:

The Rules (formulated by [livejournal.com profile] lizbee)

- Comments on this post are screened, and will not be unscreened.
- Secrets may be submitted anonymously, or not. IP logging will be off for the duration.
- Secrets must be no larger than 600x600 pixels. Secrets submitted in .bmp format will not be accepted.
- Do not use fan art or manips without permission.
- Do not hotlink images.
-Please upload your images to one of the free hosting services. I personally recommend tinypic.com. Useful tip: if you upload your secret at Photobucket, your account name will be on display for all the world to see.

One final word: be polite. We all have opinions. Respect them. There's a lot of possible wank in POTO, though tempers are less high than they used to be (it feels like, anyway). Don't post a secret that'd be offensive if it was directed towards your favorite person/character/ship/canon. There's a line here, and I don't want to draw it firmly. There's a difference between opinion and bashing. If I see the latter, I reserve the right not to post it. Just have fun, and we should be cool.

Finally, and most important: Post this call in your journals or forums with a link back here! We want secrets, and not just mine, because you all know those already.

(Picture and format totally just C&P'ed from [livejournal.com profile] stefanie_bean, who always makes things pretty.)

fic reveal

Title: Silver Tongues
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] sugareey
Pairing/Threesome: Harry/Draco
Rating: R
Warnings: Power play, language . . . alliteration.
Word count: 2,150
A/N:

This is one of those experiment-y fics that does a lot with language and the way words work. As one reviewer pointed out, and like some of my other more "out there" fics, it gets rather wrapped up in the words so that I'm not sure all the stuff about characters that I wanted to tease out really got . . . teased out. I was trying to access some very real and creepy problems both Harry and Draco might have as a result of Voldemort insinuating so much of himself in both their lives in different ways. Not sure I succeeded, but I confess I am still rather happy with the way the words themselves went.

I wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane ficathon. [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia did my awesome beta, for which I thank her profusely. And I want to thank [livejournal.com profile] vaysh11 in particular for having a quote from my fic up on her journal for weeks, when she didn't even know I wrote it! I'm still working on that "coming out about Harry/Draco" I have listed on my user interests, but those of you involved have made it truly fun. So, thank you!

(no subject)

I've done this before, and failed. So don't expect anything spectacular. But I'm having fun drabbling with [livejournal.com profile] seraphcelene and I know I'll have nothing to do at work.

Leave a prompt for a drabble! And I'll try to write it. This time around, let's go with non-fandom specific prompts. You can leave a list of fandoms you know so I can try to write one whose material you'll actually know, but I think being able to . . . say, write one for both Buffy and Martha was really liberating. So be as detailed as you want, just without a specific fandom/character.

Thanks for prompting in advance.

For the porn! You must, for the porn!

Most of you probably already know, but it's for the porn! It's like children, in a way. Those of you who were at all concerned by last year's account deletions by SixApart/LJ and how long we waited for explanations, LJ is hosting elections for user representatives on its Advisory Board. Here's some things to think about, if you're concerned for the porn:

-We want someone in fandom. I . . . am not a fan of the beginning of this post, but it gives a nice run-down of nominees' fandom status.
-For someone in fandom to win, fandom as a unit will probably have to vote for the same person, or we'll be all splintered. In general, I'm uncomfortable voting under a "ticket". But it might be the only way to get someone in fandom in, and someone in fandom is better than no one in fandom.
-Join [livejournal.com profile] fandom_votes.
-Look a fandom candidates and their platforms here.
-Vote for your favorite fandom candidate on [livejournal.com profile] fandom_votes to help figure out what fandom should vote for here.
-There will be a run-off between the top two in that poll to decide the final person fandom should vote for. It's supposed to start midnight on the 26, so get your vote on.
-Vote for the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_votes candidate in the election.
-Pimp the comm. Pimp the list of which candidates are fandom. Pimp the election. PIMP THE PORN. [livejournal.com profile] xanphibian is pimping her chosen candidates by giving away free fic! Do that! Or something!
-Be aware that the Advisory Board and/or the user representatives may not actually be able to address any of our concerns for the porn.
-Try anyway.

Happy Happy Happy Happy Christie!

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves. You're one of the warmest, kindest, most thoughtfulest, funniest, creativist, one-look-at-you-makes-me-feel-betterist,-even-though-we've-never-met-est people I know. Have a good one, toots. With CAKE.

*

Also, [dwight] question [/dwight]: Is it possible to post something on a delay so that it automatically posts in the future? For instance, for [livejournal.com profile] daily_words, I thought it'd be possible to make all the posts on the weekends and have the posts automatically post themselves each morning. Semagic has a queue feature where you can line posts up, and you can adjust the dates, but it doesn't post them on those dates. It just posts when you click "post" and the posts show up on the journal and in people's friendslists as if they were just made, even though the dates on them are future dates.

Pls I can has help?

HP scribblets

So in the post where I showed scenes from the new love of my life, North and South, I showed Margaret Hale in a cabbage dress and Mr. Thornton's sister in a peacock dress. [livejournal.com profile] aoifene remarked as to how it made her imagine Narcissa Malfoy with a peacock dress. And then madness happened.

Also, I don't have anything to do at work.

These aren't good sketches, and I should've at least traced them in pen. Why am I even posting them? I don't know. It's not like I usually show people my margin doodles. But then I don't usually margin-doodle fan related material.

Here be mah doodlezes )

Next up, my Twilight comic. Made of amazing, you guys.

P.S. Sooper Sekrit Message for [livejournal.com profile] my_daroga. I dunno whether I asked to use the scanner? But I did. So thanks?

LJ Comms

C. So the comm for learning a word a day is a go! It's called [livejournal.com profile] daily_words. It will start either tomorrow or the day after. If someone would like to make an icon with the words, "daily_words" on it, then I'd use that for posting on the comm so when you were scrolling through your flist, you'd always immediately recognize it (*looks innocently at [livejournal.com profile] late_heart*).

If you join the comm: remember, I'll always be looking for new words. Feel free to participate--or not--in any way you please. You shouldn't feel the need to comment on the posts unless particularly compelled, and if you have any ideas for the comm or things you'd like to see, please contact me!

O. Does anyone know the name of that LJ comm that sums up either meta or wank (can't remember which) in short snarky soundbites? All I could find was [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes, which I don't think it is because these aren't actual quotes. But each post is some quick meta rendition of a wank or discussion. Sort of like Book-A-Minute (which you should totally check out if you haven't seen!) So a post might go like this:

SVA: Wah wah.
JKR: PWN.
Anne Rice: I have nothing to do with this, but also, wah.

MM. There's a meme going around right now where you're asked to comment with the lj name of someone in you think others might enjoy reading. I wanted to do that meme, except make it for comms (and not just for Jossverse). I find most LJ comms difficult to use. There are either too many posts with too much info/content I don't have time to peruse, or they die quickly and are never updated. Those with unlimited posting access for members lead to lots of random posts I don't want to read, but limited posting by mods is often too regimented or fails because the mods go off and do something else.

Anywho, comment with an lj community (or several!) you enjoy, and why you enjoy it. It can be in any fandom, or it doesn't have to be a fandom at all, if it's where you get your news, hometown connections, random artistic enrichment, etc. It can have a lot of members and posts or be nearly dead, just so long as you enjoy it.

Word-a-day

Does anyone know if there's a comm which gives you a word a day? Like Wordsmith.Org's A.Word.A.Day, which emails you a new word every day and gives you the definition?

If there's not a comm like that: If I made one, would anyone be interested in joining it? If so: I'd be posting a word a day on a comm. It'd supply the word and the definition, and then probably one other thing--such as origin or an example of usage or a picture--depending on the word. I'd be focusing on words that sound really cool, that don't come up on your thesaurus, or are really useful but I don't know them (you might know them, as I have a quite small vocabulary). I'd be looking at Wordie, websites which list cool words, poems, and probably books I'm reading with words I don't know. I'd take submissions if people wanted to share a word they loved.

There would be no commenting or participation required; it'd be more of a 'let's all pick something up as we do our daily flist scanning' type thing. I dream of it being like morning coffee. However, since I'm not good at keeping up with stuff, if people were in the comm and decided they enjoyed it, maybe eventually other people could help post so we could continue to learn a word a day for a long time. Like you'd just have to contribute one post a week, or if it had a lot of members, one post a month, so on. But I'm not asking for that now; maybe if I do do it, it won't be that much work, and I won't feel like I need help. I dunno really how stressful I would find it after a while, but I know I'm willing to try for several months at least.

Lemme know if you'd friend a comm like that, and if we have a few people, I'll start cookin'.

Period by-which-I-mean-"in-the-past" Entertainment

D. Yesterday a friend linked to Coleridge/Wordsworth slash. This is piece is full of heady language, slant rhyme, rhythm, and longing. It's totally what I imagined these two poets' relationship to be, back when I was in college and didn't even know I was shipping them.

R. It makes me ponder:
1. Did you ever slash Coleridge/Wordsworth?
2. What about Emerson/Thoreau and/or Shelley/Keats?
3. Have you ever slashed historic authors?
4. Historic figures, period?
5. Where do you find fanfic about this kind of thing?
6. Have you answered "no" to all these questions, but are intrigued anyway?
7. Where are all the classic romance lit and period romance film fans on lj? Where's all the fanfic? Where are all the challenges?

A. Speaking of historic smut, I found this slightly silly costume porn which I actually don't find silly at all. It's nominally Harry/Draco, but it's one of those AU, OOC (author says so herself!) fics that could be anyone. ANY SERVANT UNDRESSING A NOBLEMAN IN THE RENAISSANCE ERA WHERE THEY'RE BOTH GETTING TURNED ON MY THE INTRICACIES OF KNOTS AND GROMMETS AND HOISERY, PEOPLE. It's well done, written by someone who obviously knows what they're talking about insofar as costumes, and it makes a long drawn out process of getting undressed quite interesting.

M. They are making a new Jane Eyre with Ellen Page. The article I'm linking to says there've been more than 20 versions of JE. I'd actually been unhappy with the 6 versions I've seen. The most recent bigscreen adaptation was in 1996 with William Hurt, and admittedly it was awful. But last year BBC did a new one, and I was very happy with it, which is saying a lot considering it's one of my very favorite books for sentimental reasons.

And they are making two new Wuthering Heights, one with Natalie Portman. What gives, yo?

A. I still love North And South like an ever lovin' thing.
